Good location if you plan to visit Caltagirone and Vila Romana.

We picked this hotel as a central place to explore the south east of Sicily. Whilst there we drove west as far as Agrigento and east to Siracusa. Main roads are generally good but road signs often just disappear completely - be prepared to get lost.

That said, we had no trouble finding the hotel once in San Michele, as mentioned in other reviews it is up a steep hill and behind the hotel restaurant which you come to first. Ample parking (although you may have to park round the side when the restaurant's busy) and then up the stairs into the hotel lobby. Staff were friendly and check-in was straight forward. Slight mix up on the room configuration but sorted immediately at the desk. The room was large if basic but had sufficient storage space. Bathroom was large and facilities fine, shower a little small for some. I found the bed to be quite hard.
The fridge couldn't be plugged in as the cable was too short to reach the socket. Air conditioning worked very well as did the free wifi probably because one of the routers was right outside our door on the first floor.
Excellent views over the countryside from the rooms at the front of the hotel which had a small balcony, table and chair, those at the back didn't have a view at all.
Buffet breakfast was fruit juice, tea and coffee, rolls and jam, meat and cheese and was served in the hotel. Dinner was available at reasonable prices in the restaurant which opened at 8pm most nights. The food was very good even when they were very busy which seemed to be every night! We found in most places in Sicily that the choice is virtually the same everywhere. A couple of evenings we ventured out - twice to a restaurant about 4km east and once to the local pizzeria just down the road.
The staff were most accommodating and once you start talking to Mr Pomara and family (we found French easiest) then they are most interested in where you are going etc etc, and they appreciate you're trying out your Italian/Sicilian on them.
All in all an agreeable hotel in a place where choice is limited.

Hotel Pomara is situated minutes away from Caltagirone (famous for it's ceramics) and Piazza Armerina (Villa dei Casali world heritage in mosaic). In this sleepy hamlet of San Michele, it all started as a Restaurant which attracted people from all over Sicily . Eventually the hotel was built to accomodate diners who found the food to be excellent. I always judge a place by the number of locals who return and this Restaurant is a must as it boasts an excellent sicilian cuisine at affordable prices. The Hotel , well managed by Mr Davide Pomara and family is squeaky clean and offers travellers a comfortable stay . A well kept swimming pool offers a relaxing stay and a panorama of the undulating hills surrounding it. We are a group of bikers and have made Hotel Pomara a second home for our trips in Sicily.

Located in a small town about 30 miles from Catania, with great views of the countryside. A car is probably essential, though driving in Sicily can be an 'interesting experience' for drivers from other European countries such as the UK. There is plenty of free parking at the hotel. The hotel has large, though basic, clean rooms. The rooms all have air conditioning, which is vital in August. The staff are very friendly and helpful, and the breakfast is fine. The week I was there had a private function on six of the seven nights, but this did not disturb me in any way. The best asset is the swimming pool. It is large, clean and in a great setting with plenty of sun loungers.
