“high quality spa”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2014

We went there to see their spa, as it is well-known fir high standards, we weren't disappointed by the quality of the treatments.
The hotel is beautiful, the rooms are large and well-decorated in tuscan style, we were a little bit disappointed by the very small window with no view.
The service staff is kind, but in a "leading hotel of the world", you could expect to be asked if you want something to drink, when you are sitting on the terrace near the restaurant. Obviously there was no possibility to be served a pre-dinner drink there, although there were 5 persons of the staff, standing there and chatting...
Another thing that we did not appreciate, was that the lady at the front desk, was not able to inform us about where we could find a nice village to visit. She gave us the copy of a map (which was very unprecise) without further explanation, although we talk italian fluently. You could see that she didn't want to be helpful. We managed to find something without her help, but in that kind of hotel you could expect a better service.

The property was Gorgeous!! With stunning views of the rolling Tuscan hills and olive groves. Gorgeous sunsets were enjoyed on their patio, pool area. All of the grounds were perfectly landscaped, with lots of flowers. The spa was great, and they had a spa pool that was amazing. I stay here four nights on my honeymoon and our room was very large, but didn’t offer any views. The service from the staff was good.
The general area in Tuscany was more remote than we would have liked, expect to come here to relax and do nothing, as there is not much offered in this direct area. It was about an hour drive to Sienna and over an hour with traffic to Florence. We also opted to dine out every night because the menu for their dining room didn’t quite fit our tastes (small, limited menu), but the hotel staff offered great recommendations outside the property. Overall we had a great experience at the Castello but in the future would opt for a location that is a little less secluded.

Good afternoon from Castello del Nero,
thank you for your kind words, it has been a great pleasure for us to host you at our property.

I see that your review is from a year ago, we have improved a lot our menu choices which are now much more extensive and our Chef is always available to create some daily specials.
Our hotel has several room categories divided per shape, size and view, in order to have a guarantee in booking a room with a view of the direct countryside we suggest to book a Double Room Deluxe while the Double Room Classic and Executive do not have a view of the country side but nice inner views of the Castello.

Since few years we also have a complimentary daily shuttle service to Florence or to Siena on a schedule on alternate days, this allows you to be either in the city centers in 35 and 45 minutes.
We are located 7 minutes far from the highway, 20 minutes from San Gimignano and Monteriggioni, 45 minutes from Lucca and Volterra, 70 minutes from Pisa.
We are in the hearth of the Chianti wine region and within 30 minutes you can visit: Castellina in Chianti, Panzano, Radda in Chianti, Gaiole in Chianti with lots of wineries and cute small village to visit. In 75 minutes Pienza and Montepulciano and Cortona.

We really look forward to welcoming you again soon as to show you the beauty of this area.

Have a nice day

We stayed here as a family (with a new born) for a long week, when we could not get into Villa Mangiacane, without doing any kind of research. We found the hotel and service excellent.

The suite we had booked was a bit small and overlooked the outdoor sitting area (which had a slightly municipal look about it). When we arrived we also felt that the hotel was a bit over refurbished, ie the medieval feel of the building had been lost in the interests of providing a modern hotel (as compared with say Villa Mangiacane). In any event we were a bit disappointed on arrival. The management immediately upgraded us to an absolutely enormous suite (it had its own lift, study, reception room...) and we felt that we had to stay after that. (NB: I don't normally complain about rooms.)

I am really glad that we did stay. The spa, spa pool and swimming pool are major highlights: the treatments are superb. We had delicious breakfast every day; we also loved the bar by the pool (and the indoor bar).

We were also given 2-3 really excellent recommendations for places to eat out, each of which was perfect. The other guests were all charming.

I don't know why anyone would describe this as a "boutique" hotel. This is a proper 5 star hotel no?

Room Tip: We were upgraded to what must be their biggest suite. I have no idea what it would cost but strongl...

This boutique hotel is fabulous in every detail -- with the kind of service you would expect in a Four Seasons Resort. The hotel, itself, is architecturally stunning and the grounds around it are lavishly landscaped and meticulously maintained.

Situated in a very rural Tuscan setting overlooking the hotel's own vineyards and Olive orchards and boasting a spa (not to be missed) and gorgeous swimming pool, one need not (and probably should not, except to burn off some calories via bicicletta!) ever leave the property.

We had both breakfast and dinner al fresco on the hotel's beautiful terrace perched above the valley below. The food, the service and the whole experience was inimitable.

Grazie mille to the entire staff at Castello del Nero for a fabulous stay!

We spent four nights here with our two children. I was in touch with the front desk several times before our arrival utilizing their knowledge of the area for restaurants, car rental, and activities. They are all helpful- especially Nelly, Alberto, and Ileana. I do a lot of online research and I did find many of the activities myself but they helped with final arrangements.

The property itself is ideally located 30 min from Siena and 40 min from Florence. Great for day trips or wineries. The pool area is inviting and peaceful. Bartenders are friendly but need more help. They worked feverishly to keep up with demand. Our children enjoyed the outdoor pool and area, letting off stream during our two week vacation. I read a previous comment about loud children. I saw a few other families enjoying the pool and grounds too, but honestly the parents were louder than the kids. I noticed the majority of guests were Americans while we were there. These are all observations, not pros or cons.

One thing of note about Castello- it seemed very formal. We've stayed in Four Seasons, St Regis, and Ritz Carlton hotels around the world with our children and never felt out of place. I did feel slightly under a microscope here.

The breakfast buffet is complete with hot and cold items, and dining on the terrace at morning is breathtaking. The wifi connection is iffy, slightly slow at times. The room furnishings are very comfortable and I loved the soaking tub and separate shower with rainfall shower head. The ESPA spa is wonderful. Be sure to enjoy the heat experience.

I would definitely stay here again, though I would consider Castello di Casole as well.

We spent 8 days at the Castello del Nero and were impressed with the food, service and accomidations. This was our second visit and was thrilled with everything.
It is located in the heart of Tuscony and the views were incredible. The room was unbelieveable with large sitting area, very large double bathroom and a seperate king size bed. The grounds are immaculate. Since it is a short distance from Florence and Siena as well as several other wonderful towns such as Castellina. This is a five star hotel and spa disserves all of them!

Room Tip: All of the rooms are really wonderful.

We stopped here for two nights during a very busy 8-day tour of Italy. The property is incredible. So much so, that we canceled one of our tours of a nearby town and lounged around by the pool for a day.

The staff is very friendly and helpful. Our room was upgraded and the design was very authentic to the region. Beds are very comfortable.

We ate breakfast twice and had dinner at the on-site restaurant. The breakfast buffet was extensive, with breads, pastry, yogurt, fruit, eggs, coffee. All fresh and wonderful. The dinner menu was a bit limited, but very good. And the view while dining was just amazing.

All in all, this is the kind of spot where you leave hoping that you will return again some day. I highly recommend it. A highlight of our trip.
