“I want to go back tomorrow!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

My wife and I visited the Hotel Borgo for our 15yr anniversary trip. Picture perfect hotel in the country side of Tuscany with the most wonderful staff! Alessio and his cooking class is a must. I'm not much of a cook, but my wife and I enjoyed it while experiencing lots of local delicacies especially the wine! Max and the rest of the staff were phenomenal, fun, and very helpful. They made you feel at home with such a personal touch. The wine tasting, the tours, the grouds, I could go on. It was everything we were hoping for in a small farmhouse hotel. It is in a great location to visti local attractions: Florence, Sienna, San Gimignano, and Volterra. As many before us have said, I would highly recommend Borgo!

We stayed at Borgo Di Cortefreda the first week in October. The hotel and grounds were beautiful although it was too cold to swim in the pool it was perfect weather to enjoy a glass of wine and take in the scenery. Max recommended a wine for us, and we realized right away, he knew his stuff!!!!

The staff were all very nice, but Alex and Max really went out of their way to make you feel at home. The room was large with a loft upstairs. The view from the room was breathtaking, and it was very very quiet and peaceful at night. The one downside. . .we didn't know we had to ask to turn on the air and slept the first night with the windows wide open. We were attacked by mosquitoes all night. The bathroom was ok. . .just a small shower and limited sink room. The water ran hot and warm depending on how many others were using the water I suppose. The pressure was adequate. But it was all very clean and tastefully decorated. The shampoo was made from olive oil!!

Breakfast was average, scrambled eggs, bacon, salami, ham and provolone cheese. Pastries and rolls along with a limited selection of fresh fruit, cereals and yogurt were standard. There version of American coffee took some getting used to, but we loved the warmed milk/cream for the coffee.

Dinner there, although limited, was excellent. We ate there two nights and were pleased every time. We also asked for a restaurant recommendation and were very happy with that as well.

It was difficult getting to the hotel. . .every time we left we got lost in Tavarnelle Val Di Pesa. . . even with the gps!

I would recommend this hotel, just get excellent directions!!!

We recently had to modify our plans while vacationing in Italy and ended up with two fantastic nights at Borgo Cortefreda. The grounds are magnificent and the service and staff exceeeded our expectations. Claudio set up a private wine tasting and "anniversary dinner" in the wine room that became the highlight of our three weeks in Italy. Cooking lessons with chef Alex was everything the wives wanted and resulted in a great dinner that night with the items they prepared. We highly recommend the couple massage poolside under the Tuscan Sunset. The staff was great and tried in everyway to meet our needs. We stayed here prior to our villa rental in San Donato and could have easlity just stayed for the whole week as it felt like we were with family.

Room Tip: Arrive early and enjoy the wine tasting with cheese and truffle jelly. Grab a glass on wine and head...

There are so many detailed reviews full of compliments that I don't feel I can add to it - we, too, think this hotel is a beautiful gem, the service is great and the room (206 great for our family of parents + 2 juniors a 17 yrs old boy and 13 yrs old girl) was lovely spacious clean and more than we expected.
Still there were two things that made it just a "very good" rather than "excellent" experience:
-wifi- the kids really want to connect and keep in touch with their friends. Internet costs 1 € per hour or 4€ per 12 hours (fair rate) but only one device can be connected at a time and every now and then it just disconnects you without warning. This is really annoying.
-the water in the shower changes from hot to cold all the time and surprises the poor showering person
This is really all and may be petty. It's minor and does not ruin the overall great impression- but I thought I'd share it with you.
Thank you trip advisor for recommending this hotel!

My hubby and I spent 3 nights at the end of September in this hotel.

4 star:
- The pool...although it would have been nicer to have it heated
- The view....the sunset it truly stunning
- The countryside and garden

3 star:
- Quality price was decent

2 star:
- The service....very patchy and inconsistent. Some personal was very nice and some other useless, especially in the morning at breakfast.
- Cleanness....it wasn't spotless
- Towel available in the bathroom....1 per person. I had to ask for an additional one and explain the reason but the following day it was back to the 1 towel policy!
- Breakfast....2nd choice quality food. Bad coffees and cappuccino, which is a sin in Italy!

1 star:
- The bed....in one word a plank! We slept as we were tired but we woke up every morning with terrible back pain

All in all, I'm not sure we will will go back.

Room Tip: The ground floor rooms have private terrace!

WELL, what isn’t to love about this hotel? From our first hour in which we were treated to an intimate, candlelight dinner in the hotel’s wine cellar to our last morning when we enjoyed the baking Tuscan sun from beside the gorgeous pool with interrupted views of Tuscany before us.

We retreated to Tavarnelle after three days in Florence and Pisa amongst the rabble of tour groups with the sole intention of relaxation. I had picked this hotel more for its location than anything else – it is a 40-minute drive to Siena, a 45-minute drive from Florence and within easy reach of San Gimignano, the entire Chianti region as well as being only a 90-minute drive to Pisa Airport. It is also yards away from the wonderful SR2 road which winds through Tuscany’s most picturesque areas in the shadow of its far less inspiring cousin, the autostrada.

Upon setting down in Room #201, with its mezzanine floor hosting a huge double bed and its west-facing balcony affording us views of the setting sun, I knew I had found my nirvana. I sat down in the sofa and smiled smugly.

Our pre-arranged wine cellar dinner was a surprise not only for my partner but also for me. I had been expecting it to be a dinner shared with others. What we were greeted by was astounding – candles, silvered stones arranged to spelt out “LOVE” on the table. We were offered a set taster menu or we could pick off the restaurant menu – we opted for the latter.

Our starters of Risotto with parmesan and mushroom ravioli were very tasty indeed. The risotto won the day as the ravioli was slightly too heavy on truffle flavour but that is from one who is not a big fan of mushrooms. To some, it would undoubtedly be a delectable treat.

The main course was excellent. Grilled chicken – large, tender and on a bed of salad – was sublime. The sliced beef was simply outstanding. We then enjoyed a crème caramel and Amaretto semifreddo for dessert, both of which were very well done. The meal was paired with a sensational fruity Chianti chosen by the waiter which went down excellently. All in all a fine start to our stay.

For successive dinners we relied on the recommendations of hotel staff members who were always happy to provide us with their favourite local restaurants. It was these recommendations which led to us enjoying three superb meals during our stay in Tuscany. One restaurant, l’Archibugio, was actually patronised by Max, one of the hotel’s waiting staff, whilst we dined there. A terrific endorsement indeed.

Aside from the food, the hotel was incredible. The poolside is beautiful with the blue water of the pool turning into the green of the Tuscan countryside before blue once again takes over in the sky. With two dozen sun loungers and a host of lounge chairs, there is always plenty of space to tip up to the pool and find yourself reclined immediately. The water is bone-tinglingly chilly at all times of the day but this makes it a more refreshing experience. The poolside was a haven.

Our room, #201, is also deserving of every plaudit. The large balcony, complete with table and chairs, afforded sensational views from the church of Santa Lucia di Borghetto in Tavarnelle right across to San Gimignano in the west. Uninterrupted. The sunsets were unbelievable, the daytime was beautiful. The room itself was spacious, well-appointed and very pleasant indeed. To wake up each morning and walk down from the mezzanine to be greeted by the early morning rays of a burning sun pushing through the balcony doors was a real treat.

But nothing is perfect. And whilst it did not detract from our enjoyment of the room, there were a couple of criticisms which should be noted. The water in the shower is intermittently warm and then cold and would change numerous times throughout the duration of a shower. The walls are also surprisingly thin and footsteps in the corridor and on the staircase in the adjacent bedroom were all too audible, as were the laughs and chatter of people in reception and the corridor.

The free wine tasting is a must-do. We met Claudio and enjoyed an intimate two hours of wine tasting and education in wine in the beautifully cosy cellar. Claudio sources wines from local producers with which he maintains a friendly and close relationship. The wines we tasted were the best examples of Chiantis and Super Tuscanys we experienced during our time in Tuscany and Claudio’s direction made the enjoyment of the wine all the more palpable. We were also treated to remarkably differing olive oils and balsamic vinegars. This was a fantastic experience – one of our favourite moments from the holiday.

So, to conclude, it is a huge thumbs-up to the staff who were always friendly, helpful and very polite. It is also a huge thumbs-up for the room, the restaurant, the wine cellar and the grounds of this hotel. There is no doubt in my mind that this has to be one of the finest hotels in Tuscany and I will certainly be popping in on any future visit to this most beautiful part of the world.

Room Tip: Room #201 has a balcony which looks out over the best vista and witnesses remarkable sunsets. It als...

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights the first week of September. Easy drive from Rome. The hotel is centrally located in Tuscany. There was a view of San Gimi from our terrace. Absolutely breathtaking! The room was large and clean. Staff was excellent. There were many things that made this property special. I consider their restaurant 5 star. I was hooked on their ravioli with their home made sauces and use of truffles. We had a t-bone for 2 our second night. The flavor was unbelievable! I thought I would collect wine from across Italy on this trip but i ended up buying all my wine here. Best red wine I have ever had! Their wine cellar also sold items made with truffles, balsamic, olive oil, aand other items from the area. The wine we ended up buying was exclusively made for this hotel. The grounds were beautiful. Signs through town made it easy to find. Recommend car rental for this hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a terrace room.
