“Reflections on Riverton”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2013

Riverton Bed and Breakfast was a wonderful choice for a special night away for our 33rd wedding anniversary. We received a warm welcome and shown to our clean comfortable well appointed, beautifully presented room, where attention had been given to much detail. There was even home made shortbread, fudge, truffles and other goodies! The breakfast was amazing. So much selection, and our pancakes and French toast were cooked to perfection, so tasty and well presented. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and left with wonderful memories. Highly recommend.

It was such fun being able to help you celebrate your 33 Wedding Anniversary, they are like birthdays, so very important. In this busy life everyone lives, time is so important, it is so good that we are close enough for you to "pop" down to Riverton to spend time on the beach and enjoy lovely meals at the Beach House Cafe. You are such a caring couple, so I am sure you will have many many years together, so hopefully you will return to Riverton Bed and Breakfast and enjoy the experience of staying here at 4R's. We love meeting lovely people.
Kindest regards Gay and Arch

Riverton B&BF was very far south on my trip to New Zealand South Island, but I do not regret any of it! The place was perched on a hilltop with fine river views from the balcony, it was quiet and peaceful. The room was very cosy and comfortable on the edge of luxury... Gay was a fabulous host, very entertaining, with a sharp sense of humor . She was also a good excursions organizer for trips to Stewart Island and Doubtful Sound. I had a great day walk over the hill in Riverton, and along the seashore where I discovered, a nesting colony of spotted shags (cormorants) in amazing breeding colors, on a rocky outcrop and straight into the wind!... Memorable experiences Thanks for everything Gay :-)

Pierre, you are one very Special person, to think after all these years you have come back to visit us once again, and to travel so far South was wonderful of you, Your life is so amazing living between The Galapagos Islands, and so many places in Europe, to think you could come all this way to Riverton (the Riviera of the South, well almost) we thank you sincerely. I know you enjoyed the wonderful trips we did to Stewart Island and Doubtful sound, and I know you are going to bring your Touring Guests back again, but please don't tell too many people how wonderful it is here. You were also lucky to have been able to do some diving and under water photography, when you stayed with P & M in the Coromandel, I am sure you had a great trip and enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed having you to stay. Thank you for all your kind words, and look forward to our next meeting which I hope will not be so far away as the last one, Our kindest regards Gay and Arch @ Riverton Bed and Breakfast 4R's

On another trip to the South Island of New Zealand, we decided to call into our favourite Bed & Breakfast place at Riverton, and a chance to catch up with Gay Maley, the delightful hostess of this fabulous bed and breakfast. Being greeted like long lost friends made us feel extra special and we got to stay in "our" room. As before, the room was spotless, the bed comfortable, crisp linen and the fridge was full of complimentary goodies, an excellent bottle of wine, and yes the sweet jar was full of chocolates - yum! There is a spacious ensuite and a small lounge area to chill out in if you want. Gays standards are extremely high, and her attentiveness to provide everything that you may possibly need is faultless, food is either home made (her bread is fabulous, jams and preserves), or locally sourced produce. The breakfast leaves you wanting for nothing, you name it she can provide it. This time we stayed four nights, as we wanted to explore the surrounding areas. Gay organised our trip over to Stewart Island, rented accommodation on the Island for two nights and then organised a boat trip to Doubtful Sounds. On our return our room was prepared for our arrival, and Gay had organised us a supper as we were returning to Riverton late in the evening. Such thoughtful hosting on Gays part makes this bed and breakfast absolutely No 1 in this region and is so well deserved. Why would you want to stay anywhere else! We will be returning again to this delightful part of New Zealand, especially when we want spoiling. Thank you Gay for your wonderful organisational skills and a most memorable stay, and making us feel special.

Room Tip: The Sea view room has amazing sunrise views.

It was so amazing to have you both to stay again, Thank you. It was so much fun chatting about your wonderful travels around the world since you were last here. Isn't it great this enormous world we live in, we can travel so far away, but always come back to "Our Country" the place we call home. It is no wonder that all the world wants to come and see what we have here. The trip we all had across to Stewart Island was amazing, and I am so pleased you got me out of my comfort zone and made me visit the wonderful Island we have so close to where we live. How wicked that I had never been there, I hang my head in shame. Our day trip to Doubtful Sound was also extra special, especially in our lovely Southern Climate, thank you Real Journeys for two great trips, made affordable with your generous discounts you offer to the tourists.
Come again dear friends, we have so many more places to visit. Our kindest regards from Gay and Arch @ Riverton Bed and Breakfast 4R's.

I have just enjoyed two fantastic nights at the Riveron B&B with Gay and Archie, the friendly and knowledgeable hosts! Guest rooms are spacious, confortable and clean, with well-appointed ensuite and a fridge filled with ;'goodies', and are an absolute pleasure to come 'home' to after a days' work or play! The attention to detail is complete; Gay has thought of - and supplies - virtually everything you might need. She is cognisant of, and caters to many food allergies and serves breakfasts which are absolutely divine! They include cooked options as well as a variety of wholesome cereals, freshly-baked breads and home-made jams. I couldn't have asked for, or wanted more, and will definitely stay again. This B&B is one of the jewels on the southern coast!

John, you write as perfectly, as you are!! It was so good to get to meet you both, and do look forward to your next visit. I am sure some people are destined to meet, and that is why we do enjoy so much having guests to stay, especially when they are as interesting as you. Your knowledge, experiences and humour are so worth hearing about, and can't wait to continue some of the conversations we had, all such fun. Am so happy you enjoyed the rooms, I am not "perfecct" but I do try hard, all the time. Stay well, and thanks for your kind words, it means a lot to us. Our very kindest regards from us at Riverton Bed and Breakfast, and the 4 R's

What a perfect weekend we had! Gay and Arch are the wonderful hosts. From the moment Gay confirmed our booking, we were completely and totally pampered.

We stayed in the Sea View Room, which had beautiful views of the sunrise, a super comfy bed with just-right pillows (I'm fussy about pillows and these really were perfect), a lovely sitting area, a refreshment area stocked with all sorts of goodies, a large bathroom with big towels and every possible amenity imaginable. Gay knew that we were having a delayed birthday celebration, so we were greeted with birthday cake, complete with candles, and a wonderful bottle of wine. Gay made a dinner reservation for us for the following night and had arranged for a courtesy car to pick us up/bring us back "home." We got back in time to see the second half of the All Blacks -- with Gay and Arch -- and with more dessert.

The breakfasts...are absolutely incredible! You'd need to stay a month to try everything that Gay makes -- it's all delicious and it's all presented beautifully, in a dining room that looks out on a deck that has a bird feeder with tui and bellbirds providing constant entertainment.

Gay truly wants her guests to feel at home, be part of her home, and not want for anything. She is wonderful to talk to and has a wealth of information about what to do in Riverton and in the surrounding area.

When we were leaving, Gay had wrapped up a chocolate cake she made for us to continue our celebration. Unbelievable and unbelievably good!

We feel like we just stayed with lifelong friends. Go stay with Gay. Let her take care of you. You'll feel the same way!

Thanks so much Gay, for a wonderful weekend!

Room Tip: Sea View room has lovely sunrises.

Firstly, thank you so much for coming to stay with us, it was so lovely that you chose to come to Riverton for your celebration of those important birthdays, every birthday is important, and we feel so blessed to have had you here.
How amazing that you can come half way across the world and find your way to our wee village. It is so good that we have a Museum of such a high standard, as are our Restaurants.
The camaraderie we experienced was exciting and so informative; will we ever get through all the interesting things we need to say to each other?
Please stay safe and continue to love and care for each other as you do.
Our kindest thoughts to you and your family

We spent a lovely night with Gay and Arch. The weather wasn't great, but Gay's welcome made up for it. Our room was spacious with a lovely big bed, separate sitting area and roomy bathroom. It was great being able to make a cup of tea in our room, and Gay had stocked the fridge with all sorts of treats. Before heading out for a meal, we enjoyed a glass of wine with Gay and Arch, during which Gay helped us book a place to stay the following night, based on her extensive knowledge of The Catlins. She also highlighted her 'must sees' on a map for us. We were very grateful for this, as it would have been impossible to see everything in one day and we thoroughly enjoyed all her recommendations. After a good night's sleep we were treated to an extraordinary breakfast, including a delicious omelette. Gay had also baked us a loaf of bread to take with us, along with a jar of her delicious homemade jam. Staying with Gay and Arch is like staying with a favourite aunt and uncle. You know you're going to be well looked after, comfortable, fed delicious food, told some interesting stories and be sent on your way with a warm hug.

WOW J, you write as beautifully as you are!! It was so amazing to have you to stay for your very short albeit very informative and interesting.
It was so good to hear of all the places in the world you have visited, and still intend to visit.
Your trip on the Doubtful Sound sounded so inspiring, and although I have an agency for that company, I have never done the "Overnight in Luxury" so must put it on my to do list.
so pleased you enjoyed the Catlins, and even during winter there are some lovely places to visit without getting wet and dirty.
We do hope you will come down from that North Island again, and maybe see all the lovely places you missed. As I write, our views today are wonderful, (4's) from our dining room.
Thank you for staying with us, it was a privilege to have you both visit us.
Take care and return soon Gay @ Riverton Bed and Breakfast New Zealand

Wow what a night, and how amazing it was to combine all the nationalities and come up with such a fun wee group. Interesting food and lovely wine! It was amazing to hear all the stories of your life style in your country, and can only look forward to more visitors from your area. To be able to celebrate your honeymoon and a wedding anniversary, for the other two, was wonderful and do hope you will both have a long and very happy life together. Take care of each other.
