“Luxury amidst jaw dropping scenery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013

If you're going to spend the travel time getting there (which is hefty) then there's no better place than explora. The views from everywhere are truly amazing, service is top notch, guides are knowledgable, activities offered are diverse. Food was fine, it was the only thing that wasn't amazing but wasn't an issue.

One important note - average age of visitors are 65+, since my boyfriend and I are just under 30 we certainly stood out!

Dear traveler,

We thank you very much for your very kind review.

Despite of all our efforts to provide travelers with the luxury of the essentials, great design and comfort, explora really isn’t about the lodge, it’s about the excursions and the experience you have with our guides in the remote. Allow me to quote from the explora manifesto: “Leave home: Disconnect, leave aside for a moment your history and your usual way of looking at things. When we aren't clinging to our own ideas and habits, we can learn about and gain greater enjoyment from everything again.”

Naturally, the average age of visitors at any given time varies. Our 2012 stats show that males are on an average 50 years old and female 48 years old. Also, our figures show that 10% of our clients in Patagonia during 2012 were on the honeymoon.

We appreciate your feedback!

After visiting one explora lodge, you are entitled to the benefits of our CESA, a recognition program with benefits including rate discounts and room upgrades for repeat guests. For information, please click here.

Yours sincerely,

Jesús Parrilla

Ignore all the other reviews. The setting is gorgeous. The architecture perfect. The food as good as anywhere- a dish of Hake I had for lunch was easily one of e best prepared pieces of fish I have ever eaten. The open bar poured very generous drinks. The other guests were an eclectic crowd of world travelers. The guides were knowledgeable and able to alter the tempo of the hikes as necessary. The hosts- Rosario and William watched over everything with a keen eye.. What more can be wished for?

Room Tip: Face the massifs- pay the extra$

You may be at what seems like the end of the earth but the vistas of this National Park in Chile are not to be missed. And no better place to appreciate the Majestic views than from the Explora hotel. A 4 night stay is almost not enough as the hiking, visit to the Glacier, Gaucho barbecue, Horses riding and nature walks are all plentiful and wondrous. You need to be fit for some of the more arduous but a good 12 K hike to the Glacier with boat trip thrown in is a great day out. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and the sun rising over the Torres is worth an early morning wake up prior to the boat trip across the beautiful lake. Breathtaking hotel and with a fabulous SPA to boot. It is an all inclusive stay and the wine is very good! The guides are knowledgeable and The hosts Rosario and William are exceptional people who treat each guest with a personal touch and make one feel right at home.

Room Tip: A must place on your Bucket list! It will take your breath away!

Dear traveler,

We thank you very much for your very kind review. We are grateful for your feedback!

It sounds as if your travel experience with explora was just the right balance of activities and relaxation, which is how we’ve envisioned it. Thank you for mentioning the explora Patagonia spa, a.k.a., Casa de Baños del Ona. Last year the 4,500-square foot spa has undergone a make-over and now offers additional treatment possibilities, a Turkish bath, indoor Jacuzzi, and cold-bath for bracing finishes to any of the above.

We hope to welcome you back and if so, please know that after visiting one explora lodge, you are entitled to the benefits of our CESA, a recognition program with benefits including rate discounts and room upgrades for repeat guests. For information, kindly visit our website.

We stayed at Hotel Explora in February 2013 for 5 nights and recommend it with highest praise. Normally their packages are 4 or 8 nights, but Claudia in reservations could not have been more helpful to arrange the extra night. She also answered our many questions in advance of our trip to help us to be well prepared in what we packed and what to expect.
Highlights of our stay: the breathtaking views and location; very comfortable rooms especially the beds, good-sized bathrooms with ample water pressure and hot water, nice amenities, large, absorbent, soft towels, robes…Explora anticipates and provides every detail for maximum comfort; very high quality guides and excursions – Explora has a boat at its dock that takes you to and from the base of the famous “W” hike, which we hiked over 3 days. One day the winds were so strong (expect very strong winds during their summer season) that the boat couldn’t make it to pick us up and we had to ride the commercial ferry. Explora also has a top notch stables and great horses and gauchos and the trail rides are among the best we’ve been able to do at any commercial property; excellent service in the hotel, led by Rosario, who exemplifies the best in hotel management, to the wait staff and front desk staff, every one of whom was a true service professional; We celebrated a birthday while we were there and Rosaria arranged a special birthday presentation of a traditional Chilean cake, with candle, and champagne at our table at dinner; great food at every meal, although the food is brought in from a great distance, it is fresh and deliciously prepared; very good quality wine and spirits, and delicious lattes, cappuccinos, etc; intimate and elegant nautical-like architecture inside the hotel.
Negatives – the internet service at night is patchy. It can be hard to get a connection, or just very slow. It is much better at other times of day or late at night.

Room Tip: if you want internet in your room, request a room closest to the public spaces

Dear traveler,

We thank you very much for your very kind review. It is enormously helpful to receive your feedback.

If you had to take a commercial ferry back to the lodge after a hike, it meant that our team of guides did not consider it save for explora travelers to make use of our own (and smaller) boat for your return. Safety is non-negotiable for us, and in spite of our desire to explore the remote and an adventurous spirit; our highest priority is to ensure the comfort and safety of all explora travelers.

The Patagonia Internet connection has been a historic challenge. In recent weeks and with the help of the local phone and internet provider, we have been able to greatly improved the service However, the service is not still up to the standards we would like and most of our travelers are used to. Even though, we know for certain that the connection we have is the highest network speed in the area.

Again, thank you for your kind feedback.

The last few reviews really summarize our experience with Explora - if you are realistic about what you can do (or are willing to push yourself), you will have an amazing time.

The scenery, of course, is astonishing, but we found that it was the human element that really made the difference in our stay. The guides, almost without exception, are knowledgeable, engaging, and love their jobs. That enthusiasm is infectious. We were there for 8 days, and did 4 of the all day hikes and did a mix of half days and just hanging out the rest of the time.

The only real "issue" we encountered was when other guests joined excursions that they weren't prepared for - the full day excursions are hikes, not nature walks, and are run accordingly. However, actually listening to the guides when the different excursions are described gives you a very good idea of what you're in for, and by day 3 the guides have a good idea of what your level is. They'll steer you right, if you listen. (For example, we were gently steered away from the "very difficult" hikes - fair enough, after listening to the (very fit) people who returned from them!) In all, however, we were able to make the best of it when in a group with folks who probably shouldn't have been there and there was probably only once where it really put a damper on things.

The food was okay - often better at lunch if you weren't on an all day hike. The jacuzzis down by the water were a delightful way to spend an afternoon playing hooky from the excursions.

We had a great time, met many interesting and fun people (both guests and guides), and saw more beautiful vistas than I expected to in this lifetime. Highly recommended.

Dear traveler,

We thank you very much for your kind and detailed review. We are very interested in your feedback.

I am particularly interested to read about your experience with your and other traveler’s self-assessment. As you can imagine for a travel company that offers authentic travel experiences in remote areas of South America, listening closely to each guest’s travel goal is vital. Our team of guides attempt to custom tailor each explora experience and – as you’ve correctly pointed out – listening is a key-ability for both, guides and travelers.

At the core of all we do lies the “explora manifesto”, which I quote here: “Enjoy the journey. Do not be obsessed with the final destination. Try to be open to the unpredictable, the unexpected and the accidental and to the things that happen along the way. Seize opportunities. Change your plans.” For the full explora manifesto, please visit our website under about us section.

After visiting one explora lodge, you are entitled to the benefits of our CESA, a recognition program with benefits including rate discounts and room upgrades for repeat guests. For information, we kindly ask you to visit our website.

We hope to welcome you to explora again soon.

Yours sincerely,

Probably the prettiest location of any hotel I have stayed in. The staff and guides are delightful. The foos is as good as you can hope for given the geographic constraints...very good but not awesome. The rooms are small but comfortable. The beds were incredibly comforatble and views from everywhere are amazing.

It's expensive and remote, but a four day stay is perfect.

Room Tip: don't skimp...you have to get a room with a view.

Hotel Salto Chico is truly an amazing place. Its location is absolutely stunning, providing breath taking views of the Paine Massif. After a day of trekking through the National Park, it was fantastic to grab a seat by a window and watch the colors on the Massif change as the sun set. Each day there were several trekking options available, each coordinated by a very knowledgeable and fun guide. The accommodations and amenities at the hotel were also wonderful. We really enjoyed our time at Hotel Salto Chico and hope to make it back soon!
