For christmas 2007 me and my boyfriend traveled to Melia Cayo santa maria for a week, this was my 5th time in cuba.
The Pros
The property was nice
The beach calm with small waves and very long for nice walks , after the sol hotel the beach is virgin and very nice
THe activities: not much to do but there are alot of kayaks, pedalos, mini catamaran , small sail boats and windsurf ( wich my boyfriend really apreciated)
The food : lobster, clamari, fresh tuna
The room: very nice and clean
The staff: Very nice and spoke good english
The catamaran trip was wonderfull and worth every peso

The cons
The management staff were horible we never got any chance tpo switch rooms because our room was close to the disco and we could never sleep before 2 am and the first night they forgot to turn of the speakers so we heard music all night. The only rooms available were ocean views and we had to pay 20 pesos a day to change which we didnt want to pay.
The hotel is 1h30 from the closest city so if there is a rainy days there is not much to do.

I recommend this hotel for anyone who is looking for a quiet vacation.
PS: The cubans work very hard and are not very well paied , show your appreciation by being generous give tip to the servers they will really appreciate AND the servers indicated as STUDENTS are not paid to do the job they live off tips , be generous !!!

This is a gorgeous place with an excellent staff who were friendly and there for our every need and request. The food was good and there is a lot of choice. No complaints whatsoever. A beautiful, relaxing week was definitely not enough. We will go back.

Here is the deal, I went to Melia Cayo Santa Maria the week of November 5th 2007. Booked through voyage Bergeron on internet for $789 tax included. First let me tell you that I am a world wide traveler and this is my fourth time to Cuba. One word to describe the property WONDERFUL. Situated between two hotels the Sol and the Las Dunas with linking walkways, you will find this to be a like a five star hotel. Grounds are beautifully cared for, pools are large and crystal clear and a wonderful spa with roman sculpures. Staff are very friendly and cater to your every needs. Rooms are large and beautifully finished with taste. There is a safe in every room as well as a mini bar an iron and a blow dryer, TV and a radio. The beach, I was there three days after that horrible storm Noel so the beach was littered with algua and debris, but they had a bunch of workers picking up all that stuff while I was there, Beautiful sand and amazing water. You won’t be disappointed. The restaurants: several to chose from and great service, some open 24hrs. Foe the food, lets remember that this is Cuba and therefore hard for them to get certain products, also they have never been none for their fine cuisine, but I still managed to put on a few pounds. So you will have to judge for yourself. Now the bad stuff, yes there are some mosquitos just like everywere in hot countries, so bring some OFF. Yes there are cats and plenty of them roaming the property, they will only come to you if you feed them. So no fear there. Entertainement is average at the hotel samething at the Sol or Las Dunas , but I don’t think you would go are going there for the show. This is a great place to spend a week walking quite beaches and enjoying life, I give this a 5 on 5.

We were 8 people staying at the Melia Sol SANTA MARIA. Our boys and daughters had a very enjoyable one week over Christmas. We all enjoyed the beautiful landscape, pool, a la cart restaurants. The buffet restaurants had a sufficient assortment of foods, breakfast, lunch and dinner. The rooms were very large. The shows were incredible. The staff was great.
And now the beach, I don't think there is a beach anywhere as nice as this one. If you want a relaxing holiday go there and enjoy
life in Cuba.

We just came back from this place and we are totally disappointed! After spending 3 days of beautiful sun, we got 3 days of cold weather. During the cold weather while spending more time in the room we noticed quite a few things that totally grossed us out. Pictures will be added. The maid services are take out the garbage, rinse out the glasses, make the bed and sweep really fast, throw some dirty stained towel nicely place on the bed and take the tip! The yellowed coffee maker did not get used at all. There's dust, cobwebs, ants, mold, squished bug juice on the wall, drooled stained pillows, and stained sheets, Oh and lets not forget the cockroaches in the bathroom. The mini bar isn't stocked regularly. Only once we were asked if we wanted more Cerveza, we tipped 4 pesos and it was never stocked afterwards. Horrible garbage smells with bones off pathways behind the snack bar. Cat urine smell along the walkways.

Over 150 pesos of tips and you don't get better service. Long waits for drinks at times. At the buffet restaurant, after you are finished you're meal, they leave the cutlery that they think wasn't used on the tables, every meal there was stuck food on the cutlery and plates, looked like someone had licked the spoon. often they run out of food and items to make drinks, pizza was not always available at this 24 hour snack bar, Even though it's on the menu and no reason why it isn't available. Food isn't the best.

I suggest that you learn Spanish, because there is a language barrier. More pictures are available but only 10 were posted. We are sorry to be so fussy but to us cleanliness is a must. I didn't pay to stay in a hut.

But landscaping and resort is very lovely. Not worth a 4 1/2 star.
