“Awesome people!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2014

I went to this resort from Jan.4-11th, 2014 with my family and couple of my friends. We had a blast at this resort. First and foremost, I would say that the staff is amazing and very humble and nice. This is the only resort that I felt like tipping all the staff even if it was the gardener. Entertainment at the beach, pool and the theatre was awesome as well. Lisdiana and Brunet are the BEST!!! They are just so happy and very friendly. Ricky, the DJ, is an awesome guy as well. The Cigar bar is where the night life starts and it is full of life once the dancing starts. DJ plays the best music and played our preferred music as well which made it even better. Overall, I would rate this 5+ resort from the whole experience, comfort, quality and friendly staff perspective. I would strongly recommend this resort for anyone who is looking for a good time and fun people environment. Viva Cuba!!!!!!

We were in the resort 28.12.13 - 11.01.13 . We were travelling many times to Cuba , DR, Mexico.
First time in Santa Maria , we are glad we choose that resort. We are beach people , in our opinion beach is perfect , beautiful white sand , clean blue water , no rocks at all , shallow gently
slop when you entering the ocean. Many beach chairs under palapas anytime of the day, no need reserve early in the morning. Palapas are in the rows higher level than beach sand, it's no problem at all, I found this even more interesting, when you sitting on your chair and look down at the beach and enjoy ocean breeze.Beach is long perfect for long walks. Perfect layout of the resort , not too small , not too big, nice swimming pools with many chairs. Buildings 3 storeys , rooms good size, clean, AC working very good. Mostly we liked service , in our opinion best so far in Cuba (our 8 th time in Cuba ), even service provided on the beach. Food - many choices in buffet , many stations - preparing food on your choice just on front of you , always found
something good, restaurants good. Only 1 negative comment - poor evening shows , we were missing real cuban music, we didn't see any Cuban Band like in other cuban resorts.
We've liked only 2 shows - Michael Jackson in New Years Eve - excellent, and Spanish Dance
with life music performing group. If they bring to the lobby or theatre real cuban music this resort will be excellent.

2nd visit to this resort, much better 2nd time around
resort was still going thru their opening phase and areas were still closed off and some construction was happening
overall my stay was super awesome
only complaint was the smell in my room, very strong musty mold smell
had no choice but to keep the balcony doors open thruout my stay
bit of a pain as it was pretty warm in the evening, room had a fan so that helped somewhat
planning on going back in April

Hotel: Very clean, well maintained, tons of staff, clean room every day, grounds were impressive and looked great, tons of pools and lots of room to lounge, no shortage of bars and icecream bar was great
Beach: beautiful, good access despite what others have said there are stairs right down to beach level.
Food: was very good, we brought peanut butter which was a good move, tons of selection always found somthing we liked

Overall good value for dollars spent, went in Jan/14 for $1050 per person

The strong points: Great staff with great etiquette, never waited to long in lines anywhere, never felt over crowded
The weak points: Wasnt any worth mentioning

We spent a week in Cuba between Dec 20th to Dec 27th to get away from the snow. The reviews on TripAdvisor were very helpful and we decided to give this resort a try. We can definitely echo the great reviews you've read here so far! Here's our quick review:

Resort: Excellent! This is a relatively new resort (2-3 years) and they've done a very good job to maintain the facility. The common areas are kept clean and we often see cleaners by the washrooms doing their routine checks.

Room: The rooms are very modern and kept really clean. We had no issues with the bed and extra pillows / blankets are available. There is a safe (free) and many power outlets around the room to charge your electornics. My only comment though is that I find the walls were a bit thin as we had to switch room after the first night as we can hear the pipes / ventilation throughout the night (we were in Building 6). Our 2nd room had an in-room door with the next room and we could hear our neighbour at night. We were fortunate though that they were very respectful and kept the noise to a minimal. Overall we are comfortable with the rooms.

Amenities: There are 4 pools on the resort and they were all kept very clean. One of the pool have an island with beach beds and it was very pretty and comfortable. We had no issue with finding a beach chair by the poolside. There's Internet cafe ($) and wifi ($) by the main lounge. I believe they are install in-room Wi-Fi as well. It got a spa, stage for nightly entertainment, cigar bar, and a gift shop.

Beach: As you've probably read, the path to the beach is elevated and does require you to go down small, rocky / uneven slopes to get to the water. It might not be ideal for you if you have physical difficulty as I only saw one staircase with no handle bar. However, above the beach there are many beach chairs and shades. It is a very beautiful beach with different water activities available. A staff took us out on a hobie boat and we had a great time!

Food: Overall it is good for Cuba's standard. If you are going to Cuba, you should already know that food will not be comparable to other holiday hot spots. I've been to Cuba before and this resort has done a good job to keep the food clean, fresh, and tasty.

There are 4 a la cart restaurants, 1 buffet, 1 24-hr snack bar, and a few grills. We were fortunate to have the opportunity to try all but one (the Asian one) and really enjoyed the food. In general I find they do a great job with fish, pork, and chicken, but have a really hard time doing the beef right. I started to avoid beef after a while.

The main buffet offers good selection. There are cooking stations as well for fish, meat, pizza, and pasta, but keep in mind that there are usually line ups during prime time. I suggest going before or after prime meal times. We never had issues finding seats but the line up for stations can be annoying. There is also a buffet near the beach (Seafood restaurant) that offer BBQ as well. It is a good alternative to the main buffet. Also, sometimes they do a Seafood dinner (similar to a la carte but no reservation) just outside the main buffet. Not a lot of guests were aware of it but it was a great lobster dinner and grill.

Things to do: We joined a catamaran trip which was nice (snorkeling, dolphin, sand bank) and headed to a tourist shopping town Pueblo for souvenir hunt. The town is minutes away from the resort and you can take the bus there (1 CUC) or cab (3 CUC). I suggest taking the cab if you don't see a bus around as it comes around every 45 mins or so. Overall Cayo Santa Maria is a great place for rest and relaxation. It is a bit far away from the cultural sites of Cuba.

We had a great time and would definitely recommend anyone to visit this resort!

Room Tip: Rooms by the left side of the hotel are closer to restaurants and pools (Building 10, 11, 12). Rooms...

I would definitely recommend this resort to anyone who might be picky. This was my 6th trip to Cuba, and I never rated anything a 5, however this resort deserves that. We picked this resort because of the amazing reviews and an awesome price. The resort was perfectly laid out and was extremely convenient. We didn't have to walk far to get anywhere. We were in building 15 which seemed to be one of the best buildings there. It was in the centre of the resort close to everything.
The one problem we had was while booking our al la cartes, people seemed to be taking a long time for this. There could be a more effective way of doing this for sure. With our package we got to choose three al la cartes, but we could also pick from the speciality restaurants, (They say ypu don't need a reservation, but reserve it anyways if you'd like to go, because they fill up fast) My favourite was the Seafood Grill and the Creole. I had the fish filet at the Seafood Grill and the chicken at the Creole. Both were cooked to perfection and so yummy!! We only had to eat at the buffet one night.
There are 4 pools. The pool in the centre with the swim up bar was obviously the "party pool." The bartender, Pasquel, at this pool was very friendly and fun, and knows how to make a good drink. The other pools seemed quieter, although we only spent a couple hours at one other pool. The beach was beautiful!! The lifeguards seemed to be on their game and were always making sure that people were safe. We went to the snack bar, and got the chicken fingers and fries most days, they were always so good! We always asked for the fries to be well done, because they were crispier that way :)
We spent most of our evenings in the lobby after dinner, we always got the cappuccinos, and often got the coffee from the guy with his coffee cart who made a mean irish coffee-he put on an awesome show too!!
The disco was great as well, although we only went there for one evening. There were lots of people and the music was great!! They played English music. It was like dancing in a giant humidor, because it doubles as the Cigar lounge during the day.
We only went to one show because we were so exhausted by the end of the day, but what we saw was fantastic. We saw the Michael Jackson tribute and it was so fun and an awesome show!
Overall it was an amazing trip, and we met some awesome people!! We would go back to this resort for sure.
p.s. I found the resort clean and they were really good at keeping with the bar fridge in the room as well as cleaning the rooms. I also saw them vacuuming the pool a few times, which eased my mind, as I have not seen them do this at any other resort!

Room Tip: Buildings 15 & 7 are probably the most convenient If you want to upgrade to an ocean view, see...

We were transferred to this resort because of poor conditions at the resort we initially booked. Our only regret is that we didn't ask to be switched sooner. We had only been to Cuba once before many years ago and had not returned mainly because good food is a pretty important part of our vacation & that many years ago it was just ok. Well the food at Playa is great. We didn't even get to any of the a la cartes because we arrived midweek and just didn't want to bother. We were more than happy with the buffet - don't miss the rice made to order! Other guests were raving about the a la cartes.
Rooms lovely & clean. This resort is quite new and they do need to get on top of maintenance now because there was some caulking that needed repair etc. - small things now that will result in problems later.
Great layout at the resort, all the noisy stuff is sort of central and the 3 story buildings surround the resort. Just the right size for us.
The entertainment pavilion was beautiful & a lovely place to relax after dinner. Loved the coffee cart in the lobby and the piano lounge area.
Make sure you grab a banana or 2 & a muffin if you have an early flight because there is nothing served in the lobby. You can go the 24 hour snack bar but nothing really breakfast worthy is served there.
Overall we loved our time here and would definitely return.

Room Tip: Building 7 + 8 are close to a main pool. All others are around the perimeter so are likely quieter.
