“The Perfect Honeymoon Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2014

We chose this resort for our honeymoon because it had an excellent rating from our travel agent for Cayo Santa Maria - and now we know why. The butler service was phenomenal. Ours went out of the way to source real Coca-Cola for my spouse, and not to mention put together a wonderful in-room dinner on our last night.... complete with a spanish musical trio! This is the place to go for couples (it's adults only), to enjoy quiet times together and relaxation in style. Main pool area is like an oasis, the bartending service is exceptional, the sunset saxophone player on the beach incredible, the restaurant service is excellent as well. We had to give the food only an average rating, but to be truthful the seafood, fish, soup, bread were excellent. Steak and beef were lacking, but I think this is typical for Cuba. We were also disappointed in breakfast, especially the lack of fresh fruit.
As long as you approach your Cuban destination without top notch meals as your priority, this is the Perfect Location!

We decided to go to this resort since it is a small boutique hotel that did not require a tremendous amount of walking.( I am 7 months pregnant) We wanted a relaxing place with a beautiful beach. We have been to Cuba 11 times. We have also stayed in this area 4 times at the other 2 Melia hotels as well as the Husa (formerly the Barcelo). This is by far, THE BEST experience we have ever had while on a vacation. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND this resort to anyone who is looking for a quiet, peaceful and relaxing vacation. We would return in a heartbeat!

The Beaches
The beaches are fabulous. There are three of them. Make sure you bring your mask and snorkel as there is amazing corals and fish. I am a scuba diver and I heard from other guests that went diving that the scenery around the hotel is better than you would see on any dive. One beach is long white sand and private. the other beach is very small but has great snorkelling. The last beach is great for sunsets. Every night, at sunset, there is a saxophone player and they bring champagne to the beach.

The Rooms
WOW! Is all I can say. We were amazed with the rooms. There is a huge king size bed with a flat screen tv, a sitting room/area, a walk-in closet with a safe, a jacuzzi tub with a beautiful window and an outdoor shower. The room is the biggest we have ever stayed in! I can't say enough about the outdoor shower. There is nothing like having a shower in the tropical air and under the stars. There is also a pillow menu. I ordered four to try to help me sleep. I was amazed with the pillows and linens. I have never slept so well. There is also a ceiling fan that we would turn on at night to help me sleep. Best rooms at any resort I have ever stayed at!

Service/Food
We really enjoyed the food at this resort. We had lobster four times! The two restaurants had amazing food and service. The lunch/breakfast place had a menu. We ordered an omelette every morning. We sat with Mary who remembered how we wanted our omelette! She was extremely attentive to our needs as are the whole staff. They are amazing! We also at the the sister hotels at the Japanese, the Romantico and the French. We would recommend the Japanese and the Romantico.

The maids did an outstanding job cleaning our room and leaving us beautiful towel designs. We also loved the turn -down service every night. We also noticed how beautiful and well maintained the resort it.

A special thank you to Armando, one of the gardeners, who always greeted us with a smile every morning. My husband runs a landscaping business. We can appreciate that all workers deserve to be treated with respect. We did our best to tip everyone. We also brought many gifts in our luggage. (20-30 gifts such as creams, markers, hats, chocolates, toys etc) We gave them to many workers in the hotel.

We were extremely impressed with the manager who makes a point to talk to guests on a regular basis. It goes to show you how much customer service is a priority at this resort.

We really loved the butler service. A special thanks to Javier and the other butler who ran me two special bubble baths with flowers. We also were treated to wine in our room and cheese and fruit plates! All you have to do is dial 700 for royal service and everything will be delivered to your room. On two occasions, we missed lunch so we ordered pizzas that were delivered hot and fresh to our room. We also liked how our fridge was restocked daily with beer, pop, water and juices!

Tipping
We also want to remind visitors to generously tip the workers. Yes this is an all-inclusive but many workers make only twenty dollars a month. They rely on our tips. We noticed many travellers enjoying fabulous service but not tipping? What is wrong with you people! I would recommend that you bring extra shoes, baby clothing, clothing, toys, etc. with you. These things are greatly appreciated by the Cuban people working at the hotel.

I can not say enough about this hotel. It is a true five star. From the moment we set foot on the property to the moment we left, we were treated like royalty. Thanks to all the staff who made our trip so enjoyable!

Room Tip: We stayed on the main floor in block 11. It was great because I did not have to walk up the stairs t...

We truly loved it. Quiet, upscale and smaller property with no kids. The food was not a worldly 5 star but pretty much top shelf for Cuba. Great staff but I won't mention names so as not to leave someone out. They all try hard and are easy to motivate to greatness, I'll leave you to figure out how.
In short, just do it!

We stayed five nights at Buenavista and then left for an additional six nights at a similar adults only resort in Varadero. Compared to that much larger resort Buenavista is truly amazing, romantic and very relaxing.

The butler service is very nice and the staff is generally very friendly and helpful. The size of the hotel (small) makes you feel very privileged and almost alone some times. It is impossible not to the relax at this place. Should you wish to meet more people just take the free bus a few minutes to some of the other Melia hotels at the island.

In all we give our warmest recommendations for this hotel.

I've been to Cuba 7 times in my life, and this by far is the best Resort I have ever stayed at. No screaming kids peeing in the pool, no obnoxious annoying partying teenagers - just regular people who want a quiet peaceful getaway. Serenity now, serenity now - Indeed. At times, sitting out by the pool it felt like my own private oasis. We we're told the complex was full, but I don't think it was half full. For me, this just made it all that more pleasurable. The staff are something else at MB. They go out of their way to ensure you have everything you need. The pool bartenders, Orestes and Osmanny are out of this world. They are true gems and a big asset to this resort. Aside from their expertise at mixing the best cocktails, they we're also the best entertainment there day in and day out. A comedy duo of sorts. The butler system is also something I never experienced before, and let me tell you it is worth its weight in gold. Although some may find it annoying to have people ask a few times a day whether everything is ok and whether you need anything, I do not. Anything that was requested was immediately made available (within reason of course). The a-la- carts we're fantastic. I hear people complaining about Cuban food all the time. Most of these people I feel will just complain about anything. I found Los Navigantes to be the best for dinner. Who can complain about succulent Lobster dinner every night, accompanied by tasty apps and surprisingly enough GREAT Ice Cream. Anybody that would rate the food at this resort less than spectacular needs to have their head examined. Buffet breakfast, poolside BBQ we're also very good. Grilled fish at the pool caught fresh was delicious. The only complaint and its minor would be the beach area is not the greatest and not very inviting. I spend most my time at the pool anyways, so for me it was not such a big deal. Although not obliged to tip since it was all-inclusive, I felt compelled to tip as the friendly service was top notch. These people are gracious and deserve to be compensated accordingly. I will be back to Melia Buenavista again and this time will opt for a longer stay.

Room Tip: All rooms are top notch, higher floor had better view.

Dear Mark B from Toronto:
We have very much enjoyed reading your review. We heartily appreciate your taking the time to describe your whole experience at Melia Buenavista in lively details. Thank you so much for having praised our staff and facilities in such a touching way. You can be sure we will extend your praising words to all our staff, so they feel even more motivated to provide some really personalized and professional services.
It is a fact that our off-shore island beaches are peculiar. There are moments of the year when the weather is gentler on the ocean and our beaches are in a much better shape.
We would be very pleased to host you again in the near future to provide you another memorable vacation.

We stayed in this - what they call - 5 star luxury-resort for 4 nights. All the staff is very friendly and our Junior-Suite is spacious and lovely with the outdoor-shower & the jacuzzi-bath. We recommend to ask for a Junior-Suite leaving not to the North, better to the West or the East. Around there are 2 beaches (North & West) with lots of spaces beside the 2 lovely pool-areas for relaxing and having a swim. Unfortunately we had mostly a strong wind and the sea in these 4 days was with lots of big waves (no sight for snorkeling).
BUT the staff has to work hard to justify the European Price level: in our appartement 1 light was not working, 1 light was working all night long, the sink was not properly working - in the breakfast-room we had to wait more than 45 minutes to get a simple omelette - although the personal was standing aroung chatting: typical for a state ruled business - none shows interest to work more or the best!
But to recover the honor I have clearly to admit, that after a talk about my complains to the managing director everything in our room was fixed immediately with lots of honest apologises.
What is really a huge lack for this kind of hotel-standard: there is no WiFi at all in all the area...and this for the highest category of hotel in the year 2013!
>>> After we travelled through Cuba for 3 weeks, so we recommend this place with restrictions!

Room Tip: Junior Suite but not to the North - reserve one to the East or West side!

We were looking for a quiet, relaxing vacation for our third trip to Cuba, after Varadero and Holguin. The Melia Buenavista is a small resort, with long beaches to explore and ample beach chairs if you want to walk or simply stretch out and read by the ocean - none of this nonsense about reserving chairs for the day. We took advantage of the free shuttle bus to visit the other two Melia resorts down the beach (Las Dunas - huge, Disneyworld atmosphere; and Melia Santa Maria, midrange) and were so thankful to be staying at the Buenavista.

The service was outstanding: we always felt that hotel and restaurant staff were doing their best to make sure we had a good experience. The beds were comfortable and came with a 'pillow menu' (but the pillows we started with were great), and the room was easily the best we've had in Cuba (loved the outdoor shower!) This is a new resort - 3 years old - and this shows in the facilities.

The only downsides: tiny no-seeum bugs that bite. We'd read the reviews and hoped that they would be gone by the beginning of December, and so we didn't put on the bug spray until it was too late, they'd got us. I also like taking photos in early morning and late evening - favourite mealtimes for the biters, too.

We had also hoped to do some snorkeling, but the snorkeling lagoon is very shallow, and the Atlantic side was quite rough for most of the days we were there. This didn't stop others, but they looked more expert than we'll ever be. We did enjoy swimming, and watching the pelicans dive near us.

Room Tip: From the 2nd floor of the 6th villa - we could watch the sun setting over the ocean, and listen to t...
