“Great Honeymoon, Beautiful Resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

My wife and I went to Melia Buenavista November 11th till the 18th 2012.
After never being in Cuba before it was a very nice experience. The weather at this time of year wasn't the greatest, it was still nice everyday. But not very hot.
The rooms were great, large spacious and beautiful. We did have some issues with the Hot Water in the outside shower. (it didn't get hot enough).
But our Butlers (Lucas & Javier) took care of everything for us. Also, Ernesto (the manager) was extremely friendly and welcoming. (gracias por todos)
The food was great, drinks great the staff amazing. The bar staff at the outside bar were all super friendly and helpful. (Thanks Yaromil for everything) I could trust those guys with anything. I would defiantly suggest this location for everyone. If the weather was a little nicer then it'd have be completely perfect.. My only note to travellers, bring all the medications you could possibly need. (because none can be found there)
Also, after travelling with the Bus from resort to resort you'll see why Melia was the way to go.
Thanks everyone there for everything!!!

Room Tip: All the rooms are great!!!

This review is a little late but I wanted to make sure to spread word of this little gem. My husband and I went to Buenavista Oct 2012 and had an amazing time. This was our 8th trip to Cuba and by far our favorite place. We truly felt like we were getting spoiled the entire trip. The service at this resort is 2nd to none. All the staff try very hard to make the trip special for you and unlike other resorts we've been to, they provide excellent service whether you give them a tip or not. I really can't say enough about all the staff here and the effort they put forth each and everyday.

We stayed for 1 week and never left the resort and never went hungry. The food was very good and plentiful. Although they did not have a buffet we were always satisfied and stuffed by the end of each 4 or 5 course meal. If we did get hungry the room service was great and served with a smile.

The only negative I will mention is that both my husband and I did get many, many bites (I think they are called no-see-ums). They itch like crazy and there doesn't seem to be a way to avoid getting them (we tried lots of bug repellant, skin-so-soft & even bug bite patches). My husband read somewhere that it has something to do with the moon cycle so depending on when you go they could be very bad or not at all.

My husband and I like to try new resorts every time we go away but we will make the exception for Melia Buenavista and can't wait to make a return visit.

Room Tip: We asked for a room on the 2nd floor but when we arrived were told that 2nd rooms are more expensive...

Just back from a week at the Buenavista.

It was our first time in Cayo Santa Maria and the resort did not disappoint!

The rooms were oversized and very nice, 5 stars for Cuba far and away. Flat screen TV, electric safe, bathrobes and a seperate sitting area are features. The second floor balcony view of the ocean was amazing and well worth the extra upgrade. The out door shower was a very neat experience, it took a little getting used to but very exhilerating once you do.

The butlers were great also, you can set up your week with them when you arrive and they will let you do your own thing, or they will take the time to spend time every day to make sure your happy. Twice we came back to the room to find a bubble bath waiting, once with champagne on ice, a very nice touch. Gracias to Edel and Gerardo.....

The food was of excellent quality and the ambiance of the dining rooms was very nice, the only knock was the lack of variety. Being able to visit the two sister properties to dine is a must, the buffet at the Las Dunas was AWESOME! Room service at the Buenavista is also a bonus, we ate in a few times and enjoyed this feature immensly! Burgers and fries :)

The beaches were very nice, clean, quiet and the best snorkeling we have ever had from a beach! Say hi to Micheal and Reynold (the lifeguard) at the east beach, I enjoyed their brand of "burbon" very much!

The pools were great also, we stayed at the quiet pool mostly and enjoyed the calm atmosphere, the only thing missing was bar service, we went into the lobby bar to get drinks but it was a bit of a hassle.

The bugs are very very relevant at this property. If you have a "sweetness" to you look out, they will love you! Two draw backs for our vacation were this issue with being bitten. Even repellent with deet struggled to stop them, and we were also disappointed with the fact that there was no tennis "pro" and the court was mostly unusable do to the bugs.

The comment that the people make this a 5 star is true.
Cuba has changed over the years and will not be left in the shadows of other Caribbean destinations to be sure...but....bear in mind there is still a ways to go to get to the level of other Sun spots and you will enjoy your vacation more fully.

Tipping is NEVER expected at an all inclusive (in my experience), that said, these people work very hard for a meager living and we have so much in comparison that we did tip and it was greatly appreciated evry time!

Finally, thanks very much to Ernesto and his whole staff, we wish you all the best in the future :)

Cheers from Canada!

Room Tip: Second floor ocean front is worth the upgrade ($140.00 CCP)- Check the map for locations.

After reading hundreds of reviews we chose Melia Buenavista - the most expensive in Cuba, small, and an adult only resort. We expected money factor works as a screening - NO crowds, NO kids, NO unwanted socializing, etc.

And we got what we expected and even little bit more – because of windy weather there were no mosquitos/no-see-ums and no crowd on the beaches.

Some facts about MB:
- Mini buffet has Spanish prosciutto (Jamon), brie, parmesan and very decent blue cheese.
- There are 3 Spanish wines (Red, White, and Rose) in the menu - a same quality level as $15 wines in Canada.
- A la carte restaurants are on a same level of service as Toronto a la carte restaurants where you would pay around $100 per person for a dinner.

In my opinion reasonable tips:
- 1 peso/day for a maid
- 1 peso/day for a barmen
- 1 peso for a buffet breakfast
- 2 pesos for a breakfast/lunch in a la carte restaurant
- 5 pesos for a dinner in a la carte restaurant (actually should be same as for a breakfast/lunch but maybe we were willing to pay more for some glamour :) )
- We did not use butler service as we did not need it but 1 peso per visit looks reasonable

And finally Every reasonable person should realize:
- No-see-ums/mosquitos are everywhere in the Caribbean
- No quality beef/dishes from a beef in Cuba
- 5 Star rating in Cuba is a 4 star rating in Mexico, Costa Rica, etc.

Me and my wife stayed at the buenavista from December 1 to 8. It's our third time at the buenavista and each time just get better and better.

We tried, on the same island, the Iberostar Ensenachos and the Las Dunas some years ago... but when you try the Buenavista.. there is no coming back! Especially the las dunas that is so noisy that you need your headache pill with you if you go there ( seriously it's more noisy than a mcdonald at prime hour).

The first thing you will notice when you arrive is how small the place is. I think it's only 102 or 104 chamber so a maximum or 208 people in the whole hotel. Anywhere you wanna go from the restaurant at the beach to the spa... you will never walk more than 5 min. And my god the place is beautiful.

The rooms are big and beautiful. The first word that come to mind is ZEN.(check my photo for more detail). It's always clean and the outside shower is really a pleasure.

The 3 restaurant offer everything for your taste from perfect lobster to really good piece of meat. I know a lot of person think food from Cuba is average and it might be true for a lot of hotel.. but not this one. Each night they have a restaurant with a theme like Mexican,Cuban,Gala, etc. and the other restaurant serve almost everything you'll like.

We had the pleasure to have a special supper with Ernesto the manager and 4 other couple that already came more than once at the hotel. We talked about the hotel, what we liked and what we would like and Ernesto listened. Really good manager. BTW if you wanna spot Ernesto in the hotel it's really easy... he look alike Jason Statham! ;)

What make this place so special for us is the staff from the hotel. Each time we get back we are happy to see them. They really take good care of you. From Oreste at the pool bar ( Master of Banana mama.. if you go there ask a banana mama from Oreste you won't regret) to Iorvis at the bar.... each got their personal touch. I can't name them all because they are all great. Javier (El mejor del mundo!), Noe (Mister Pink), Oreste (Mario Lemieux), Iorvis, Mario, Yanislady. Those are the best team for making your drink.

For the animation... Lily and Navy are always trying hard to entertain you... but as this place is more a relaxation place then a party place... don't think you will dance all night long. At 11:00-11:30 pm it's quiet and there is nothing do to except drinking at the lobby bar... and probably alone as most of the couple at this hotel is around 40-50 and go to sleep early (no judging here, it's been like this the three time we have been there).

At night there is always some animation or musician 7:00-8:00 to 10:30-11:00. They make a 70-80th music night where they open the pool bar at night and make some dancing. It's fun. There is a Cuban group with a little guy that sing like CRAZZZZY!!!. they are there 3-4 time in 7 days. They sing at the restaurant at night or in the lobby bar 1-2 time too. They are amazing and well deserve a listen.

I highly suggest the Buenavista for couple that want to relax and evacuate all the stress.

(Please excuse my typos, my main language is French)

Room Tip: Room 1121-1122 are at a really nice place near everything and you have a beautiful view on the beach...

Back from a very nice stay at the Buenavista, it was our 4th time, and I don’t have to tell you a lot more, it looks like we like it there.
It’s a small resort, beautiful, quiet, well maintained, and the staff makes it a 5 star.
A very nice addition is the special Supper for returning guests with the manager .
Thank you all,
Wishing you a Wonderful Holiday Season,
and only the Best for the New Year

We stayed here 3 nights. The rooms are beautiful. Clean and comfortable, well equipped, with jacuzzi and outdoor shower. The service is very good. The staff is very helpful. They really make you feel like a valuated guest. We had a wonderful time, however I´m not sure if I want to stay there for more than a couple of days due to the lack of variety in food. The French restaurant serves good food, however the menu is rather limited.
