My family and I stayed at the Blue Bay Motel in Tobermory, Ontario, Canada in August 2006. I have stayed at the Blue Bay Motel twice before, in 1989 and 1997. The Blue Bay Motel is an older motel, but is kept very clean. This is a plus. We like to stay at the Blue Bay motel also because it is on the Little Tub Harbor in Tobermory, with each room having a view. Tobermory is a beautiful old fishing village that is mostly a tourist destination now with boat tours of the clear waters, shipwrecks, and Flowerpot Island. This allows us to park at the motel and walk around the harbor to the shops and restaurants. This is a plus! July and August are the most crowded months. We also stayed in June once, which was less crowded. But even with the crowds, it is a mostly peaceful area with a slightly cooler climate for the hot summer months.
On this most recent visit, we also found that they had updated the motel a little since our visit 9 years ago. They added a ceiling fan to each room, which is really nice since they do not have air conditioning. But since it is usually cooler here at night, air conditioning is not usually needed. They also have newer televisions with cable tv and wireless internet access. I did have some signal strength problems with the internet, but it usually worked. The bath tub also appeared to be updated.
Compared to other motels, there are some things missing that would be nice to have. As I mentioned, they do not have air conditioning, which I have never needed. They also lack a swimming pool, free breakfast area, room telephone, and small refrigerator/microwave oven in each room. But the thing that I prefer the most in motels and hotels is queen size beds rather than full size beds. At the Blue Bay Motel, you can only get a queen size bed in a single bed room, not in the 2 bed rooms. But for full size beds, I was actually comfortable here.
I really like the Blue Bay Motel for its cleanliness and of course, location. By the way, the owners are friendly too. Because there are only 16 rooms, making reservations is a must, especially in July and August.
I only give the Blue Bay Motel an 8 because of the missing things that I mentioned above. And also because the 2nd floor does not have an elevator, which I do not expect at a small motel, but is necessary for some people. We have also stayed at the Tobermory Princess Hotel next door. It has most of the above missing things, but no swimming pool. They even have an elevator! It costs a little more for a room there, but is also worth staying at.
