“Great time at Great Weddington”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

Having driven down from London we arrived at four in the afternoon. Although the house is off a narrow country lane it is only a short distance from the Canterbury/Sandwich road. This presented no problem to sat nav.

Neil Gunn met us at the door, helped us with parking and our bags, and showed us to our beautiful room at the front of the Regency House. There are plenty of descriptions to be found elsewhere, but suffice it to say you are back in the days of Jane Austen. Plus you have the modern amenities of a lovely well lit modern bathroom, king size bed, free wi-fi and television.

Kate was away at first visiting one of their daughters and it was Neil who served us tea and cake on the sunny garden terrace. The gardens surrounding the house have beautiful trees and a large manicured lawn. A delicious breakfast of cereals, fresh fruit and full English is served when you want it in the dining room.

The location is perfect for touring this part of Kent. We visited Dover Castle, Canterbury Cathedral, the ancient town of Sandwich and the fishing town of Whitstable.

There are lots of good places to eat nearby, we would recommend the lively Duke William just ten minutes away.

Kate and Neil made us feel extremely welcome and we heartily recommend their delightful accommodation.

Room Tip: Ask for the double overlooking the front door with view across the fields.

Huge thanks to Neil and Katie who opened their wonderful home for two nights when my daughter got married recently at Preston Court. Hospitable, helpful, accommodating .... they rose to the occasion and made the whole weekend one to remember. It´s not easy for a B&B to have to deal with photographers, hairdressers and the fall-out from a bride and two bridesmaids(and the mother of the bride!) getting ready. We highly recommend Great Weddington and look forward to returning to staying their again.

We spent a lovely weekend here, lovely grounds and fantastic accomodation. The traditional and tasteful decoration was fully complemented by the personal touches such as fresh milk for our tea in our rooms in the morning. We did feel some of the personal touches meant that you did feel a little uncomfortable in that the number of personal family photographs were significant.

The attic bedrooms include childrens books and a stair gate, both of which were really appreciated. The trampoline at the back was fantastic, and the children loved bouncing on it.

The hosts were welcoming, and prepared a lovely dinner for us. We had brought out own drinks, and hadn't appreciated the significant corkage charge prior to arrival, so when booking do bear this in mind. They do have a wine list though, and are happy to supply beers and spirits on request (at an additional charge).

We had a similar experience to one of the earlier reviews, and parking round the rear of the property is forbidden. Parking at the front of the house was fine.

All in all a lovely weekend, but would warn others travelling with young children to ensure they spend all their energy prior to entering the house to ensure that none of the personal touches are damaged. We managed the weekend damage free, but whilst the children were around it made it difficult to completely relax.

Room Tip: If travelling with young children as for an attic room.

Beautiful house with lovely grounds in country location but within only a 20 min drive from Canterbury or 10 mins from Sandwich. Warm welcome from owners who were very helpful and spontaneously offered to book us in for supper at a pub in Sandwich. Only downside is that whilst saying that pets can be accommodated in reality this means in a separate room on the ground floor rather than in your bedroom which isn't quite dog friendly enough for me. Left ours at home on this occasion.

my husband and I stayed for two evenings as a short weekend break from London.

we found the house very easily, however our 'welcome' was a little strained. we accidentally parked at the back of the house and were consequently met with a flurry of hand signals from Neil to instruct us to park at the front.

we were taken into the house and shown directly to our room; and after asking if we'd like milk for tea, were left to our own devices. throughout our stay we were never shown into the drawing room, which would have been nice as the weather was terrible. one evening we came home earlier, and thought to sit in there, but found the door locked.

we were also never given a key to our room, which was a little strange. not sure if they have keys - but this was never offered, so perhaps not something they offer?!

the room was lovely, spotless, with a turn down service. bathroom was adequate, lots of towels, though the toiletries were quite lacking for the price; i would expect shampoo for £125 p.n.

breakfast was a good selection of cereals, fruits, toast and also included a cooked breakfast. as a vegetarian; my breakfast was simply 'without meat' - it's always a lovely touch to have a vege sausage, and most b+b s do this...

Kate was a lovely host, very knowledgeable on the history and surrounding areas. Overall I would recommend this for a quiet country retreat, particularly with some minor improvements to the hosting/welcome.

Wonderful house. A bit difficult to find at night, being that it is off the beaten path. We had confirmed for 3 nights while I was in London for business. I had to shorten my Weddington stay to only 2 nights as I had to stay an extra day in London for work, and Weddington charged me the full rate for all three nights anyway, which I thought was a little bit extreme being that I gave them 2 days notice. It is a very well kept home. My wife and I stayed in the room which is seperated from the main house, and we enjoyed the privacy and comfort of the room. Staff is nice and breakfast is great. We are regular customers of the Wolsey chain of lodges, and found this one to be top-notch in terms of Wolsey quality standards. I highly recommend. Easy access to Canterbury and Dover.

The Bed and Breakfast scene in England can be a bit spotty, and therefore we decided to check out the Wolsey Lodges and see if there were any near our destination of Canterbury. Wolsey Lodges have a certain standard to adhere to, and therefore any bed and breakfast you stay in under that name is guaranteed to be a lovely stay. Great Weddington met and exceeded those standards! As a young couple travelling with a baby, we were nervous as to whether Great Weddington would allow us to stay, as many B&B's in England do not allow children under 12. Neil and Kate welcomed us all with open arms, and even suggested we take the attic floor as the best option for our little family. The attic floor is not really mentioned on their website, but it is refered to as the “Family Ensuite” and comprises of two bedrooms joined by a very short hallway, with a bathroom between the two rooms. The suite was available at a sale price of 85 pounds. The suite can only be booked together, so you won't be sharing your bathroom with a stranger! Our bedroom was nicely appointed, with lovely little touches and accessories. It had tea and coffee making facilities in both rooms, along with some biscuits which were much appreciated. Upon arrival, Neil met us and advised us that since we had booked dinner, we would be eating at around 8pm, and to please stay and enjoy tea and biscuits in the living room downstairs. We had some wonderful Earl Grey and shortbreads, and enjoyed the fire and coffee table books. We were the only people staying that night, and it was very much appreciated as we didn’t really feel like socializing, but you must be prepared to if you stay here!

Dinner was 31.50 pounds each, and while it was absolutely delicious, it was quite expensive. However, for the convenience of dining with a baby sleeping upstairs, it was worth every penny! We started with a smoked salmon and leek starter, followed by pork in a brandy cream sauce with mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables, and finished with chocolate mousse and camembert and crackers. Wine was from a wine list at a reasonable 12 pounds. One small thing that would have been appreciated was a little bit of music, just to absorb the sound! Coffee and tea was finished up in the living room, and we retired for the night. The beds were heavenly and the down pillows were wonderful. The tv worked well and the bathroom was very large for the space. However, the shower was a tight squeeze for us both, and we aren’t large by any means! The hallway is filled with children’s books and this would be a big bonus for anyone staying with children.

The one slight, small issue that we had was merely an attention to detail issue. There were little things left in our room from a previous occupant…a bottle cap from a bottle of water, a hair tie on the nightstand, shampoo and conditioning in the shower that was half empty…little things like that that just reminded you that we were in someone’s home and not a hotel. However, these were all easily overlooked as the rooms themselves were spotless otherwise.

Breakfast was served whenever we wanted it, and we decided upon a cooked breakfast which was delicious. We also had cereal, yogurt, and freshly squeezed orange juice.

At first, you worry about staying in someone’s house as they can make themselves overly available to you during the time you stay, but Neil and Kate knew exactly when to appear and when to disappear, and left us to our own devices more that we thought they would (which, as this was the first alone time these new parents had had in a long time, was fabulous)! I would stay here again in a heartbeat. Enjoy!

  • Liked — The comfy beds, the well appointed rooms, the food!
  • Disliked — Loved it all!
