“Great for kids but don't come for the Maldives snorkeling experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

We are loyal platinum members and decided to stay at the Sheraton as one of two resorts during our vacation. The reviews about snorkeling at the Sheraton were so mixed, with some describing it as the best snorkeling they had ever seen, we decided to check it out. The snorkeling consists of small patches of growing reef (the patches are like 2-3 feet at most each), and while you do see some fish, other resorts, also within a 20 minute boat ride from the airport, allows you to see10x the amount of reef and fish easily off the beach. We did see a shark and a manta ray swimming in the lagoon, but they seemed lonely and out of place w/o a reef or other fish. As a tip, seems like the back overwater bungalow lagoon had the most fish on the side closest to Shine spa and the opposite end where the manmade bunkers were. There was barely any snorkeling in the front lagoon. There is shark feeding every day, but it could be made educational, rather than a worker just throwing fish into the water.

I know that people look for different things on their vacations, and if you are not in it for the off the beach snorkeling, then I think this would be a great place to stay, especially with kids. Not all positive, had some negative issues, including my daughter getting food poisoning from breakfast, and receiving a 5am wakeup call that was supposed to be for someone else. As a platinum member using points, they did not initially give us a very good room and we did not feel like we received any special recognition at check-in. Actually, it seemed like we got the worse in the category we booked b/c we used points. The second day, we happened to pass by the front desk, and met a wonderful staff member named Rochelle upgraded us to overwater bungalows for a day (based on availability) and then put us in an partial beachfront view room that was better located than we were in before. She went out of her way to make us feel special, checking in to make sure we enjoyed our stay. We got an amazing welcome chocolate structure that was the most impressive I've ever seen. I feel like the resort had a few stand out employees and the rest (like at the dive shop) were just ok.

Kids loved the kids' club, and the woman (Isa?) is really wonderful and took the kids' interest into account. I thought the kids club would be too babyish for my primary age children, but she took them to hidden spots to find hermit crabs. I am so shocked no one has said anything about the kids pass. For 15 USD/kid + tax a day, your kid can eat a 3 course meal each meal, provided you order food as well. The menu you can choose from is great, includes healthy choices like grilled chicken or fish, fresh veggies, in addition to the junky kid stuff. The food prices for adults were decent for resort costs, 20-30 USD typically for an entree. Not cheap, but I've seen worse and the Maldives is just an expensive place. The food was good, and it was great that there is a choice b/t continetal, thai, and indian. Also, unlike other resorts, there is food option available all day, so you don't have to wait until 7:30pm to eat dinner like at other resorts.

Rooms- as we saw the overwater bungalow and the beachfront villas, both were great rooms but we loved the overwater bungalow even though they were smaller. It is nice to sit on the balcony and watch fishes, etc, go by. The rooms were clean, no ants or bugs. No sea lice in the water, but the island does have mosquitos so bring repellent. They offer free tennis and ping pong, and will provide the paddles for free too. All in all a nice place to relax, or go for a second half of a vacation when the kids tire of snorkeling on another island.

Room Tip: overwater bungalow or on the beach.

Thank you for choosing to stay with us at Sheraton Maldives and congratulations for achieving your SPG-Platinum membership. We look forward to welcoming you at many of hotels and resorts in 2013.

It is disappointing to read that your daughter fell ill during your stay with us. I am not able to locate any reported such cases with our duty manager nor with our resort doctor who is stationed here on the island. We follow HACCAP food hygiene practices and together with the doctor believe that we would have been able to respond to your situation if we had known about this during your stay.

Thank you for mentioning our team members – especially Ruchelle and Aiza, as you mentioned them by name, I am sure they will be very pleased to read your note and overall satisfaction.

It’s great to read that you also enjoyed the ‘SPG Kids Pass’ program, it’s great value for families.

We look forward to seeing you again and trust you will enjoy our new SPG promotion – Power Up!

Sunny regards,
Ursula

I am not allowed to give 3.5 Stars but that's what I want to give. I dont feel like being generous and giving it a 4-star though. I agree with the views of the previous reviewer to a great extent.

We came here for our 2nd Anniversary. It was a once in a lifetime holiday - anniversary in Maldives, at a top notch hotel and it was Christmas time!

Maldives is certainly beautiful, no doubt. Especially for people who have not been on exotic beach holidays, it would be a dream stay at Full Moon in Maldives. But if you have paid through the roof, your expectations blow up. Maldives is anyways expensive. Plus when you pay Sheraton rates in Christmas, you would not like to settle for anything less than a few days of Bliss. And thats exactly what happened to us. Maybe, to best enjoy your stay here, don't expect Utopia. Only then you will be satisfied and happy.

Overall
The resort feels run-down and does not give the feeling of offering a special stay in a special place. Maybe, they have excellent photographers who captivate us by showing brilliant pictures on their websites. Rooms are just not up to the mark. Beds are not comfortable. Linen, Upholstery, Wood all seems aged. We loved our room location though (see room tips). We needed privacy, we needed a good view of the beach and thats exactly what our room offered.

Staff
We liked the staff and service for the most part - We would like to especially thank Vijayalaxmi for going out of the way to help us in our requests. She arranged for a nice decoration, cake and drink (non-alcoholic too) for our anniversary at a short notice.

Every staff person smiles most of the times when they meet you or even pass by you. Our housekeeping guy was good and tried his best to keep things in order.

Costs
Before you even think of Maldives, understand that it is very expensive. Its all islands in the middle of the ocean, so they have to pay extra to try and get you everything to make your holiday memorable. Plus they have all sorts of taxes which are go to as high as approx. 20% of your costs.

And now if you think of Sheraton, loosen up your wallets even more - Standard Rates average around $300-$500 per night for a Beachfront Deluxe Room which is the lowest category of rooms.

And if you plan your holiday during XMas or New Year, be prepared to shell out a crazy $200 per person for one evening meal! That is nothing but blatant looting. And theres no special event, gathering or fireworks to even justify this hefty mandatory expense. They take guests for granted big time and you have no way out unless you are given special consideration maybe? Speedboats $100 per person? Common guys, you always knew none of your guests would even attempt to swim 20 miles in the ocean to reach you, didn't you?

Food
Food is decent and averagely priced. They have different cuisines and our cuisine was good.
We strongly advise to carry your own ready to make meals if your budget has already exploded with the reservations.

Activities
Beach Activities are good and they provide life jackets to everyone and snorkeling gear to people who responsibly use them. But please be careful when you go snorkeling alone - we saw 4 feet sharks right near the shore from our room one day. Though that did not deter us from a great first time snorkeling experience a couple days later.

Communication
We dont know about mobile phones but they have a Link@Sheraton room where you get free wired/wireless internet. Wired internet is chargeable in rooms. They have a good collection of books/magazines/TV library in that room as well. I read in one old review that they were informed about all the rooms in the resort being made wireless but that was non-existent yet.

Recreation
The Gym is good and much better than other Sheratons Ive been to - even in mainland metro cities. Has lots of equipments and of good quality. Pool and Tennis court are nice for getting those arms and wrists worked up as well.

Final Notes
We recommend going to Full Moon with average expectations. If you have SPG points to splurge, you can definitely go here. But if you are spending cash for a holday in Maldives, please consider other resorts as well which sound promising. This place is good and offers seclusion and a good experience if you just forget that youre at a Sheraton :)

Room Tip: Ocean Villas are too expensive though recommended by many. If you are choosing Beachfront Deluxe Roo...

Thank you for choosing Sheraton Maldives to celebrate your 2nd anniversary.

It is disappointing to read that we failed to meet your expectations in some areas of your stay with us. Your visit, over Christmas and the New Year is the highest / busiest season to visit the Maldives. It is a time of year when the room charges are at their peak. The resort offers complimentary W-Fi access in the lobby and Link@Sheraton. We are currently in the process of upgrading the Wi-Fi network to cover the entire island and the project is expected to be completed by April 2013.

I will share your review with Vijaya, it is great to read that she went out of her way to satisfy your needs.

We trust that as a valued SPG member, we will have the opportunity of welcoming you to many other Sheraton Hotels & Resorts around the world.

Sunny regards,
Ursula

3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

This was the final stay of our honeymoon, and our first time to the Maldives. I must say, that when we booked through the travel agents, the brochure pictures had some lovely images and it was listed as a 5 star resort. However, after booking and doing some research - we was somewhat alarmed that some reviews had some negatives ie the proximity to Male and the airport - as our expectation of the Maldives was of a secluded island with lovely views. And this was unfortunately true in our case.
Resort

The resort was immaculate and what you expect from a name brand. The beaches were immaculate and the waters really clean with lovely shades of blue. The resort is fairly small so you can walk around it in about 20 minutes. The only negative I can say is that although the beach looks pristine, there are lots of broken and dead coral, so we had to be careful.
The resort did not have a house reef, but there are a few places around the spa centre where you can see lots of colorful fish.

Ambiance

The resort did not feel like the Maldives we expected. We could have been on any resort in the world. We didn't really spend much time on the South side beach, as it was busy, with lots of boats passing by and the skyline of Male on the horizon. It did not have that desert island feel. So we spent our time on the North side where we had unspoiled views and was quite. Even the ugly industrial island opposite the water bungalows was out of site. At night, however, the lights of Male looked pretty sitting at the bar. Unfortunately, also due to the proximity of the lights, you won’t get to see many stars.
With regards to the Airplane noise, you do notice it a couple of times a day if the big jets go ahead - but it isn't that noticeable. But it does remind you of home. There is periods where there are frequent hums of seaplanes flying over.
Also, we love sunsets, and the views of the sunset are marred by lots of boats in the horizon and another island with a jetty, and you can see Male as well, so not the picturesque moment that we dreamed off.

Staff

The staff here was fabulous. Everyone bar one person had genuine smiles and looked after us. From the restaurant staff to the snorkel center. Special thanks to Rango who lent us his camera so we can take some fantastic pictures on the snorkeling excursion.
One gripe I had was on checkout. I had some starpoints which I wished to use and I mentioned this on checkout to the lady who was a bit grumpy. However after taking my card and processing my payment - she mentioned that she forgot to and this left a sour note at the end.

Food

The food was good standard. We recommend going on AI package as the prices were really over inflated in price to quality ratio.

Room

We stayed in 2 rooms

314 - Beachfront deluxe - We had unspoiled views on the 2nd floor. And located on the north side. The room was pretty basic, it was nice but not really worth the price. Was about a 3 star room. It was also conveniently located – close to all the amenities. The other beachfront rooms on the south side had the views of Male.
408 - Ocean Villa - This room was amazing. Really secluded and was worth the upgrade price.

Other

- Note to people booking in future. If you book through travel agents, Sheraton don’t give you starpoints, which didn't apply to other chains we booked through. You also don’t get starpoints if you upgrade to a higher room.
- Excursions were great. We did the fishing, dolphin cruise and snorkeling.
- It was pretty annoying to sign for everything and find out that you was being charged when on AI. This happened on numerous occasions.

Conclusion

It was a nice comfortable stay, a couple of nice touches here and there from Sheraton, but it lacked the Wow factor and next time would stay at a different resort further away from Male with a more desert island feel and which contains a house reef to snorkel in. This was due to its location and the associated sea and air traffic.

Room Tip: Choose the North side - we had 314. Also splash out if you can on the ocean villas - well worth it!

Thank you for choosing Sheraton Maldives for your honeymoon and congratulations on your wedding.

I am happy to read that you enjoyed your stay with us. You’re right in saying that all Starwood Hotels & Resorts, not just Sheraton Maldives, do not reward Starpoints for package bookings via any third party. Of course, all retail rates booked via a travel agent will earn Starpoints along with all rates booked on any Starwood website will earn Starpoints.

With a choice of two SPG resorts in the Maldives, we look forward to welcoming you back to one or both of our resorts when you are next in this beautiful part of the world.

Regards,
Ursula

Just returned from a 9 day stay as a solo traveller. My room was a deluxe sea facing room which was spacious, functional and very clean, no bath just a walk in shower... that was fine by me.

Feast was the restaurant serving breakfast, the choice of fresh fruits, eggs and deli was good, do like my muesli but none was available... small thing.

Loved the two other main restaurants 'Sand & Coast' and Sea Salt... ate most evenings in Coast which has a great international menu with a good choice.. a little expensive but that was the same everywhere around the hotel.

The Anchorage Bar, next to the pool has a big deck with plenty of seating and day beds etc... this could be so much better if there was wifi available in here rather then everyone having to trek to the lobby to get a connection got their IPad and phone; bet I am far from being the first person to suggest this!

All in all a good place to go for couples and families and as a single traveller would also return

We came here for our anniversary. Water bungalow is best room out of all other types. You can see the tropical fish right under your bungalow. We spent two days for snorkeling, see lots of fish. Make sure to bring the water proof camera. The water is just on your waist.
Our favorite restaurant is Sea Salt restaurant, you can chose any kind of fish, seafood or steak and ask them to cook whatever the ways that you want. Totally worth it. Their morning buffet breakfast is wonderful, all different kinds of food and good cappucinno. They have continental breakfast, Chinese, Indian and local Maldives food.
Their chefs are marvelous. Since the weather was raining and storm while we stay, they have an event called " create your own cupcakes" in one day. That can really entertain us.
We don't really have much complaint, just the weather and the water from bath tub was yellowish. After they fixed, it's much better. Excellent guest service.
By the way, got to try their spa. Their massage service is excellent except the bathroom shower is pretty complicated.

Was at the Sheraton Full Moon Maldives from 14-17 Dec. The whole country is amazing. The moment the plane approaches the airport, the spectacular atolls that come into view is simply breath-taking. Hint: get a window seat on the plane if arriving in the day. The stunningly beautiful clear blue waters around each island/atoll is a sight to behold and savoured. The airport however needs a LOT of catching up to do. Crummy and way, way beneathe the luxury the hotels offer.

Check in was smooth and I would not expect anything less from a hotel that charges over USD$700 per night for the water bungalow----and this is just mid price for the hotels in Maldives!! Yet staying in one of these over the water bungalows is a must for the sheer unique experience. The bungalow is ideal for a couple and ONLY for couples/partners/honeymooners as the shower and toilet have an open window for all and sundry to look into them. They have frosted glass doors yet on the adjoining wall, there is a 2 ft by 2 ft window that has no covering....so much for privacy!

The open balcony/patio over the water is the reason it makes the stay in these bungalows unique amd memorable. You just step down into the crystal clear waters from the patio. Its open yet private. The bungalows are designed facing the open sea yet your neighbours cannot look into the patio. In fact you can even sunbathe in the nude if you so wish. At night just lying on the deck chairs under the stars with the waves lapping beneathe you and the sea breeze blowing past is truly wonderful. Its dark so the stars show up spectacularly and gives it a very romantic feel. So private it is that if you wish to, you can even do IT under the starry sky in the open..:-))) The bedroom is not necessary......

One draw back of the water bungalows is that in Dec, the currents are quite strong and the waves at high tide smash quite thunderously beneathe the bungalow. Was awoken several nights because of this. Think the waves at the far end of the bungalows nearest the spa island are the strongest. Tip...avoid bungalows 140 to 152 during this time of the year if you do not wish to have your sleep disturbed. Also even at low tide, the currents are too strong to snorkel below the bungalows. Spent a lot effort just trying to stay in one position. Had to keep hanging onto the ladder to avoid being swept away. However in spite of the strong currents we managed to see reef sharks and sting rays swiming beneathe our feet....quite an amazing sight.

Hotel service is pleasant although we find that the staff at Sheraton Fiji more welcoming and warm with their smiles and hearty 'bullas' when they greet us. Here they just smile meekly and go on with their business. Maybe its just their culture. Just pleasant.

Foodwise...buffet spread at the feast for breakfast and dinner was limited but the food was good. No complaints yet nothing really much to crow about either. Drinks are not included in the buffet and they are EXPENSIVE!!! But we're here to indulge and luxuriate so its part and parcel of the whole experience.

The hotel is spacious enough so we did not feel it was crowded at any time and we could get deck chairs by the beach readily. Didn't have to rush to reserve deck chairs in the morning unlike some other Sheratons I know of.

Its a great place to be if you want to just relax and vegetate and cut yourself away from the world for a few days. Overall the experience of my stay in the Maldives was wonderful and have nothing but positive things to say about it. Will be back in Maldives but will definitely try the other hotels as there are so many and would like the experience of the other hotels and islands.

Staff and management at Sheraton can feel proud for their service and making this stay one that will be remebered. To all reading this..... come to the Maldives...you will regret not doing so!!

We arrived to the Sheraton Full Moon Resort at night. Our arrival was met with multiple staff members waiting for us at the dock as we sped up in our private boat directly from Male airport. We were quickly met by their welcome staff and whisked off to our room. The facilities are constantly being cleaned, the restaurants and grounds are in tip-top shape. The staff here is the real stand-out though. Everyone from the GM to the groundskeepers are friendly and accomodating. The spa experiences (we had three in six days) were phenomenal! The "Maldivian Ritual" a lengthy couples experience was thrilling, but I would have to recommend the "Winter in Maldives" spa afternoon... it's an experience you'll certainly remember forever.

Room Tip: The Beach Bungalows are great for the outdoor bathroom/shower...but once you've experienced the...
