“Absolute paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2012

This was our 7th visit to the Maldives and can say without hesitation that Chaaya Lagoon Hakuraa Huraa was up there with the best resorts we have stayed at. True it is a long way to travel to the Maldives but once you arrive there all cares evaporate when you see the resort and the smiling faces that greet you. The registration procedure is short so you can get to your room as soon as you can. We had visited a Chaaya resort a couple of years before (Ellaidhoo) and were not surprised to see the warm welcome we were given again. Once registered we were shown to our recently redecorated Water Villa were our luggage was delivered within minutes so we could now relax. As we had arrived during lunch we were given the opportunity of seeing the excellent array of food on offer. One of the first people we met was the Head Chef, Nissanka, who was very polite and engaging in conversation about the food on display. He also introduced us to his other chefs. Suitably refreshed we returned to our room to truly relax on the more than adequate balcony.
The Water Villa was very spacious and kept clean by our room boy who came round twice a day. Everything, bed linen/towels were changed on a regular basis, daily if needed.
During the stay it was my birthday and whilst I like to keep a low profile, I left the restaurant before they could sing Happy Birthday, our waiter tracked me down to the bar and got everyone, including the entertainment duo, Sheryl and Dexter, to sing. Also, when we got back to the villa the bed was very attractively decorated.
The bar area was excellent and the bar staff very attentive. Once the bar staff knew what you normally ordered, your drink would be ready as soon as you walked into the bar. The entertainment by the resident duo was excellent, they also came into the restaurant earlier in the evening which we thought was a nice touch.
The food was superb. There was a good selection, especially the themed dishes. One chef that stood out was Rubel. From early morning omelettes to evening meal salads, both freshly prepared while you watched, were to die for. Don't miss the freshly made bread of an evening. We were offered a meal on the beach and were glad we accepted. A four course meal that showed off all the chef’s talents.
Even though we went to relax we do enjoy snorkelling. Other reviews say that there are no fish in the lagoon. Let me dispel this myth. There are many fish, you just have to be patient and quiet as you snorkel. In one instance my wife found herself swimming alongside a ray. Other fish spied were Lion Fish, Tangs, Trigger fish and even a Sole which took me nearly 15 minutes to photograph as it was very well camouflaged every time it moved.
To sum up, thank you to Raj and his close knit family of staff. Special mention to Ali, for helping a novice Android user sort out the internet connection; Rubel for the superb meals and Nissanka, even though he left the day after us to be closer to his family at another Chaaya resort, for being especially friendly.
Would we stay there again and recommend to others?
A big resounding......YES.

My wife and I spent 4 nights here as part of our honeymoon, and the place was fantastic - especially for the price. The Chaaya is an all-inclusive resort, with well appointed water bungalows and it costs a fraction of the price of other resorts. I would think the Chaaya water bungalows are the best value in the Maldives to be honest,

To get there you need to take a sea plane from Male, a very enjoyable experience over the stunning atolls. You are met at the pier by incredibly friendly staff who ensure you have a great stay from start to finish.

The lagoons are absolutely stunning and teeming with sealife (including some resident rays) and are absolutely crystal clear - as you would expect in the Maldives.

We are not particularly 'beachy' people, so 4 nights was enough, but for people not looking to spend a ridiculous amount of money on a resort in the Maldives then we would not hesitate to recommend this place.

We visited Chaaya for my 50th birthday in November and what a superb experience it was.

From the moment you arrive the staff cant do enough for you, when you land in the sea plane hot and tired, you are greeted by a smile a warm welcome, a lovely cold face cloth and a very welcome cold beer !

When they found out it was my birthday, they made me a beautiful cake iced with my name and the waiters sung Happy Birthday that night in the resturant. The room guys decorated our bed as well with rose petals, towel swans and a specially printed Happy Birthday

The reception staff are all excellent and will help out with any queries or problems with a smile. Not that we had any problems at all during our two weeks.

The water villas are beautiful, well equiped and exceptionally clean. The guys cleaning the rooms do so every morning and will change the sheets and bath towels ( if you want them to) and in the evening will turn your bed down and replace your beach towels if you wish.

The glass viewing floor, private balcony and steps to the lagoon give you access to a stuning array of fish and sea life in the lagoon, take reef shoes as its sharp. Snorkling is briliant but you need to walk out towards the reef for the better coral, nearer the inner lagoon the live coral is not so abundant . However just by our villa we saw Rays, Lion Fish, Tangs, Trigger fish to name but a few and there was even a turtle spotted at the other end of the villas. We were in room 109, the higher numbers had a better view of the sunset, but we had the sunrise.

The food is very very good, there was always an excellent choice at each meal ( 3 a day plus snacks, all freshly cooked !) and the choice to have meals on the beach in one of the other secluded locations or at the Crabs Resturant if you wanted to have a special dinner.

You have your own waiter for the duration of your stay, ours was Majeed and he was lovely, even when we left at 05:15am he was up to serve us breakfast with a smile ! We had a dinner of lobster on the beach and the presentation and food was stunning. Majeed even made us birds out of palm leaves!

Rubel the omlete and salad chef was brillant and his omlets are the best we have had anywhere, his salad presentations were so spectacular they had to be photographed and his giggle is infectious !!!

The bar staff were all great and all good fun and again cant do enough for you, there is evening entertainment with two great singers from the Phillipines and also bingo, crab racing, a magican, films on the beach, cocktail parties ( most of the entertainment had a charge of about 10 dollars but was worth it) we won a nice bottle of wine playing bingo!!!
We met some lovely people also staying there, and Anne and Pete - the winners crab dance was a revlation !!!
The entertaiment ends at aprox 12.00 so noise is not an issue.
There is a good selection of all inclusive drinks soft or alcoholic and we found the beer and the cuba libras very good !! You can pay for other drinks if you wish.

The Spa is lovely ( the massage is definately worth doing) and the trips out are worth doing especially the snorkle safari and the Island hopping and at $35 dollars each are good value.

You can walk round the isand in about 20 minutes but considering that most of the villas were full, there were no queues at mealtimes and we hardly saw anyone walkin around in the daytime mind you it was over 35 degrees most days!

The diving team are all very good and very professonal and Magic who was my husbands dive buddy was great. You can get snorking equipment to keep for the duration of your stay from them in the Dive Centre free of charge.

We can't rate this island, the accomodation and the all of the staff highly enough and would say if you are thinking of going to the Maldives then this island seems to have it all - it is a stunning island with staff to match.

Thank you to all the staff your smiles, sense of humor and great attitudes made our hoilday very, very special and we will never ever forget it

Sally and Colin

I am not sure what more I can add to all the fabulous comments already posted about this resort.

We went for my special birthday and from the moment we touched down in the water taxi we were treated so well. We were welcomed at the end of the jetty with a huge smile from Ryllyn who had cold towels waiting for us for before we walked down to reception where a cold beer was waiting for us – bliss.

Our water bungalow was wonderful and had recently undergone a bit of a makeover so everything was fresh. I cannot explain how great it is to wake up every morning, open the curtains, walk out onto the terrace and take in the view of the lagoon with neighbouring desert island. I will warn you that when it does rain the bungalows can be noisy, but then that is a small price to pay for staying in such an idyllic place and you do learn to sleep through it.

Our room was cleaned twice a day and nothing was too much for our room boy Soffan. Crisp clean bed linen, slippers and new bathing robes every few days.

You have your own dedicated table in the restaurant which I liked as it meant we had the same waiter who soon knew your requirements for drinks and would have them on the table within minutes of him seeing you – we had Moosa who we found very friendly and efficient. Food was a little limited at times, but they do have a cooking station and Ravi would cook to your desired choice. If you love salad when visit Rubel on the salad station who would make you a special salad fit for a King or Queen. Be warned though, he is a mean badminton player, so if you want to work off any over excesses then see him on the badminton court around 4pm each day!

Evening entertainment is limited but that suited us. The singing duo of Sheryl and Dexter are great and they will sing request songs as they did with us – they even went out of their way to research our wedding song from 10 years ago to sing to us on my birthday, how wonderful is that. A must is the Crab racing which is done once a week in the bar; we didn’t win but had a great deal of fun.

The Island itself is small and compact. You can walk for what seems miles on the sand when the tide is out and when it is in you can snorkel off your terrace in the lagoon and even swim under your own bungalow where there is a glass floor section to view from. The Island hosts a wonderful Spa facility of which my husband and I enjoyed.

There are lots of trips you can do from the Island, but we found them a bit pricey and decided to just enjoy what the resort offered. Twice a day there are free snorkel trips out to the reef which I would recommend if you want to see a variety of very colourful fish. That said, the lagoon is home to a couple of Trigger fish (see picture) who swim on their sides and who you can feed directly off your very own terrace.

I spent my birthday being totally spoilt by my husband and by the staff in the resort. In the evening I was treated to a most wonderful meal on the beach including birthday cake, so thank you to all the kitchen staff. The waiters, Sheryl and Dexter all came out on the beach to sing to me as well. I was just totally overwhelmed when Management also joined in – thank you Nalinda for everything.

I would totally recommend this resort. If you have something special to celebrate then this is the place. There were tears in my eyes as it was time for us to leave and the water taxi took off leaving this wonderful island behind.

Thank you to ALL the staff that made this holiday so special and memorable.

Room Tip: We had room 154. The higher numer room get the sun all day and are a little further from the bar an...

Well this was a great place and the receptionist still knows your name when she sees you .the food was always very good. The bar is a funny place though. There was a magician that they tried to charge you to see even though you were sitting watching him in the bar anyway . No problem though, we just laughed. They do charge for silly things like a very small and I mean small bowl of popcorn ($3.00 us)
You also have to write on a list every drink you order.
I must say that overall the staff were always friendly and couldn't do enough for you.
The only thing I didn't like was the lack of alcohol in your room. You are not allowed to take a alcoholic drink to your beach bungalow. That would have been nice to finish the day on your balcony

My husband and I have been to Chaaya Lagoon the first week of December. Needless to say, gorgeous island! Very good accommodations, kept impeccably clean and tidy by our lovely room boy, Kereem. Excellent food carefully prepared and delivered with pride by fantastic chefs (Ravi just to mention one of them), and table always impeccably attended with a caring smile by our waiter Majeed. The impression you have is that staff really cares and take pride of their island and their service. They really listen to people here, whenever you think ‘it would be nice it there was…’ there usually is! We had a beach bungalow and a wonderful and secluded spot with private umbrella and sun loungers overlooking the white beach and turquoise lagoon, a joy for the senses! We deliberately chose the beach bungalows because we were seeking that particular scenery, but the water bungalows offer other sorts of delight.
Warning: take ear plugs, when it rain at night the noise on the roof of the bungalows is very intense, and you will also need them for the sea plane (weird they don’t mention it!!). And beware of mosquitoes, they bite even during the day!!!
The only downside has been the water taxi. On arrival, we had to wait over 2 hours for our water taxi to take us to the island, and although the waiting area is pleasant, we had had a 10 hours flight and a sleepless night and all we wanted was to get there and start to enjoy our holiday. But the worse part was the return journey. Our sea plane arrived late to the island and was only carrying us two that were due to fly at 11:30am, the remaining passengers were due to fly at 12:30. We took off from the island just after 09:00 and the journey is 40 minutes. Despite being a “quiet” day (Monday), you need to negotiate 4 busy queues, 1 to scan all your luggage, one for the check in-bag drop, one for the passport control and one for scanning your hand luggage. We got to the airport at 10:10am. Result: total panic trying to listen to the BA boarding announcements and all the time thinking ‘I hope they know we are here’!! We made it with 20 minutes to the flight and with no time to get a drink or even use the toilets! MAKE SURE and EXPECT to leave the island 3 or better 3 and a half hours before your flight!

Just back from 10 nights at this resort,we throughly enjoyed every minute there, from arriving in the air-plane taxi and seeing al the islands below us was breath taking.Even though it was our honeymoon,we went with another couple who we have been away with before in fact it was their idea to go here and so pleased they had chose to go here.We asked for a water bungalow in rooms after 150 because we was told it was quieter and they get the sun all day long, and we was`nt disappointed,it was paradise on our door step, with steps going into the sea off our verranda,water-proof shoes are needed if you want to have a walk around in the sea,the deepest it ever got was up to the waist other than that it was just above the knees, very pleasant to walk and snorkle in.
There is quite a good variety of fish swimming around and under the bungalows, under water camera`s a must so much to photo especially when we had fed them in the morning. Our house keeper was called Youssa so helpful ,pleasant nothing was a problem for him.Our waiter in the resturant at our table was called Samir and it was nice to sit at the same table every time, because Samir would know what drinks we like every meal, such a charming, pleasant and very helpful young man.Infact all the staff were very nice and friendly, never had a problem with anything. If it`s peace and quite with a lovely view and fantasic hospitality then this is the place for you,we want to do it all again please !!!!!!!.
