“A must do. Bucket list....Check”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2012

AMAZING!
This is a must do thing for everyone.
We upgraded to the $44 tickets and it was worth the money. We got close up to the little buggers coming in for the evening. I totally understand not being able to take photos during the "walk" but I do think we should be able to take photos when we are sat waiting.
Bring a blanket and gloves - Burrrrrrr

Lots of Penguin were seen here! They are very cute and I was appreciated by the Aussie eco-attitude!

“Anti-Photography Restriction an Unacceptable Approach to "Protection"”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2012

I am a professional ornithologist and photographer, and have conducted decades of field research on many sensitive bird species, including thousands of field hours with penguins. That said, there appears to be no valid reason to prohibit ANY AND ALL photography AND videography of wild birds from this venue unless the intent is to specifically deter the use of flash photography. Their website explicitly mentions how flash may disrupt the birds and how sensitive their eyes are - but the one-size-fits-all "we don't trust you" approach is very disappointing to people, making them feel "one person ruined it for the rest", and is leading them to go elsewhere to view this particular species.

There is absolutely NO REASON that (under direct supervision of a ranger by request), people equipped for low-light (or IR), high-ISO, and FLASH-FREE photography should be prohibited from documenting this fascinating species. The venue should be well-posted to that effect, and patrolled by the docents to ensure people are both non-disruptive, and are not using light-emitting devices or flash.

By the sound of other visitors, it appears they share the same observation as I that more disruption was being provided by this facility's artificial illumination than photography or videography would have created, and concur with the deep disappointment of any and all photography being banned.

I would highly advise potential visitors wishing to enjoy fairy penguins and capture their behavior in a quiet, photography-friendly surrounding to visit St. Kilda. With quiet patience, a good high-ISO capable still or video camera (WITHOUT flash), and an undisturbed surrounding, you can get some amazing images and behaviors not influenced by humans.

“Best experience ever”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

The penguins are so cute and little. They are very close to the walkway and some of them are playing. It is a must visit attraction. Remember to bring binoculars. Although we sit at cheap seat and behind, we are able to watch clearly the very beginning when everyone else are unable to spot the penguins.

“Amazing Penguins”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2012

The Little Penguins only come up to shore after the sun sets. In summer around 8pm. Bring an umbrella coz it rains and wear warm clothings as it will be very cold sitting on the concrete steps.
It is really amazing watching them crossing the beach to reach their nests on the hill side. Maybe in future the management might enclose the look out area to keep us warm. It costs AUD22.10 per adult to watch them. Friendly park rangers are around to answer your questions. Lots of souveniers in the store.
