“Home by the beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2012

A lovely family run hotel right on the beachfront. We had a nice big room with very comfortable beds and a balcony overlooking the beach. Fairly basic amenities but quite adequate. The bathroom was very small but we managed alright. The included breakfast was very good and the dining room has windows on three sides all with sea views. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The bus and tram stops are only a couple of hundred metres and the shops are about the same distance. We have stayed at Strandhotel before and will definitely return again. If you want a friendly, clean and comfortable place to stay in Scheveningen, with a very good beach location, then you cannot do better than Strandhotel

Room Tip: No frig' in the room. If you really need to keep something cold the staff will let you put it in...

Next to the ugly concrete fortress type "Carlton Beach Hotel" and at the north end of the promenande (that reminded us a bit of the "German" Ballermann in Palma de Mallorca or some British tourist centres at the Spanisch Costa Blanca) this small house is a nice alternation.

The reception was very friendly and all staff very supportive. The lobby and ground floor areas have high ceelings and are nicely furbished with old leather lounge seats, wooden applications and historic paintings. And the beach and sea view from the breakfast room is spectacular. The breakfast was good - for a Dutch 3-star hotel - and provided several choices of bread. Selection of cheese (one) and cold cuts (two) was a bit limited. But the rest (cereals, juice, marmelade, boiled egg, fruits) was fine.

Rooms and standards are ok. Bath-"rooms" are more of a wardrobe size - I would say max. 1.5 sqm - and the toilet for whatever reason has no toilet lid (as already some of the critics rightly stated) which makes the first impression a bit strange. But shower and room is clean and tidy. Beds are too soft, but that's surely a personal thing.

Room size of the standard rooms is ok but rooms are not so inviting to stay longer than for a sleep. Beware of the "Budget Rooms" (we had for the kids) as these are really small with almost no place to put your belongings.

After 10 pm the outer doors are closed (to be opened with the room keys) and there is no more service or staff on duty. So either you choose from the vending machine in the lobby or bring your drinks and snacks from outside.

Parking permissions are provided by the hotel at €10 per day and if you arrive early in the morning or late in the evening you almost always find a parking spot in the street close to the hotel. But don't move during the day on sunny weekends since Scheveningen then becomes a giant parking lot... And the bus and tram station is just a 5 minutes walk away - so you better take public transport to be in The Hague within 20 minutes.

For a long weekend with the kids the Strandhotel was absolutely ok - and also from a price perspective the right choice. All main attractions and restaurants are in walking distance. And you are first row to the beach and sea.

I stayed here on business with a colleague. Our Dutch government colleague was wondering what we thought of the hotel as he wanted somewhere good to recommend to other visitors. We told him. it was lovely! the weather outside was freezing, but the hotel itself was lovely and warm, and that was matched by the staff who were extremely friendly and welcoming. Rooms were comfortable and we had good sea views. Breakfast was typical European fare and very nicely presented, and the hotel itself is charming with many paintings and curios. Transport links to the city centre and station are excellent, with the tram terminus (route 9) only a minute or two's walk away. I will definitely be staying here next time I visit Den Haag!

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view :)

I asked my company to book me in a "small" family-run hotel rather than a corporate one in downtown Den Haag, (The Hague), and this did not disappoint. Although the weather ranged from beautiful sunshine to mini Hurricane Katrina, I loved staying in this turn of the century (the previous century!) villa formerly owned by a German family who used it as their summer home. The staff were gracious, the breakfast room lovely with a view on the beach, and all in all very enjoyable. I had room 12, a single which looked out over the North Sea.

Room Tip: Single with a view on the North Sea, choose 12.

I was forced to cancel a room at the same day of the arrival because my syster could not leave her country. The reason was a national strike of the public transport and her plane was cancelled. I had to pay the cancellation costs of the hotel room equal to 2/3 of the total amount (2 nights instead of 3) for the amount of 200 Euro. The reason given by the management was that I could have been refunded by the insurance, which I did not have. I felt that having to pay so much money was unjust, unfriendly and speculative. Not adequate to the circumstances, especially because I could see with my eyes that the room had been immediately rented to another gest, and the second night as well.

Lovely hotel, quite basic but very clean and wonderful location overlooking the beach, worth paying a bit extra for a sea view. Good breakfasts and very helpful, friendly staff.

The Strand Hotel is a great place to stay. The staff is both friendly and helpful. The breakfast is exceptionally good and is served in a dining area overlooking the sea. The tram stop is very close and convenient. The room and attached bathroom are both clean and functional. We recommend this place and would definitely stay again ourselves.
