“Idyllic Retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2011

We stayed in La Concha in late September and thoroughly enjoyed our short break there. The surrounding landscape was beautiful and the accommodation was very charming and comfortable - exactly what we were looking for. We had a hellish time with the car hire company which resulted in us being delayed in our journey to Los Peidados by 5 hours, therefore we didn't arrive until midnight - not ideal when travelling somewhere quite remote but a quick phone call to the host and she came to meet us and guide us to the casita in the dark. Having arrived so late with empty stomach's we were pleased to find a supply of bread, butter, jam, tea, coffee and most importantly beer and wine awaiting us!
The facilities are fantastic - the pool although not large is lovely and surrounded by fig and almond trees. They even have a computer room with broadband and a separate laundry room.

Orgiva is a charming town and we would thoroughly recommend breakfast at Galindo's on the main street for an abundance of cakes and pastries!

The dirt track to La Concha is quite rough so would recommend you get insurance to cover the wheels and under the car, although we did not need to claim on this as we just took it easy on this road - the car just needed a good wash by the end of the trip!

The weather was splendid and we would thoroughly recommend Los Piedados particularly in September, or early summer as it was comfortable enough to make the most of the many lovely walks.

This place was intoxicatingly beautiful. We went in January, and even though there was rain, it was magical. We stayed in El Azahar, surrounded by pink almond blossom, and could walk out into olive groves and there were orange and lemon trees laden with fruit. The mountains surround you and you feel cradled by mountains which I could watch forever as the clouds and sun created new colours and shades constantly. The mountains were never the same twice. There are fantastics walk everywhere, and we were miles from roads and traffic.
The casitas are charming. Very aesthetically delightful, and definitely rustic. This is totally my taste. Bohemian and yet elegant. There was every facility. There is huge character and a world away from soulless villas I have frequently stayed in. This is the Spain I dream of. Orgiva is very hippy and new-agey, also cool and Spanish, and Lanjaron has a faded rarified elegance. Los Piedaos lies roughly between the two. We found everyone very friendly. Especially the lovely custodians of Los Piedaos. They were so helpful and kind.
Salobrena is not far off and a gorgeous seaside town, and was very warm and Spanish.
I cannot wait to go back to Los Piedaos. One day I would like to live in the Alpujarras. A place after my own heart. I would especially recommend this place to artists, creatives, writers and photographers.

I just got back from a long weekend at La Concha with my wife and 18 month old son. We loved it. The place was magical. The style of the interior is very cosy and rustic. There are plenty of decent books to read, a log fire and lots of space inside. The design is fabulous. The interior keeps very cool on hot days and you would not know that there are other houses just next door. You get your own private terrace with dining table and barbecue. The walks around La Concha are great. The hills are covered in wild thyme and rosemary and every few feet you'll find a fig or orange tree. After walking, I loved taking a refreshing dip in the pool. Orgiva had a great little restaurant where you could sit outside under the orange trees. They served delicious set lunches that were excellent value. I would not hesitate in recommending this place, and in particular to creative types. You will find plenty to inspire you at Los Piedaos. In fact, I'm looking to go back there later on in the year.

Sadly we were disappointed. Having read rave reviews both before booking and in the visitors book at Casa de Concha, we missed the magic. Although the property was spacious and private (the others 2 casitas were not occupied), we found the property to be rather too 'rustic' for our taste. On first entry there was a musty smell and the first impression of the decor was of a hotchpotch of furniture some of which could be improved for future guests eg the very uncomfortable sofa, disguised with a throw. We found woodlice a problem in the property and swept up 20+ each morning and evening - apparently a seasonal problem. The drive to the property requires some care, and perhaps it is a good idea to arrive in daylight.
Orgiva itself was an interesting little place with a few shops and some very good restaurants, the New Age influence of the area obviously having an impact with plenty of incense sticks and health food shops around. We explored the area both on foot and by car and very much enjoyed the rugged beauty it offered. The high villages were worth the drive.A trip to the Alhambra at Granada gave us our culture fix and we would recommend that you visit.
