“Amazing views from the top and worth the walk”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2013

This isn't too difficult a walk but is steep in parts and if not too fit take your time. Also ensure you take plenty of fluids and snacks. About a quarter of the way up as you enter the wooded section there's a booth for payment but you are warned of this at the bottom. The ruins are pretty basic as you would imagine but the views are great in all directions as you make your way around the fort.

“A steep climb but worth the effort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

This mountain-top fortification was well worth the climb - but make sure you have sensible footwear and a reasonable level of fitness. We got there at 0900 hrs just as the caisse opened. As we came down the path was getting very busy - so time your visit early if you can. Amazing views at the top. Walked back into the village where it was surprisingly difficult to get a drink! bad timing on our part I think.

“Magnificent views complement the history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2013

Remarkable ruins (although what survives mostly or wholly post-Cathar) atop the peak. The climb is worth the views on a beautiful day like we had. While the ruins themselves are interesting, there are other Cathar sites where the ruins themselves are more engaging to a visitor less knowledgeable about the history. IMO, the history here alone is well worth the visit. The museum in the village below is worth a visit and picking up a few post cards.

“More interesting from below”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2013

There are quite a few Cathar castles, and of course their last bastion Montségur is something special.

The castle looks very impressive from below, resting on the pog - it's truly a magnificent sight from every direction. The climb up is steep - I heartily recommend taking some water with you - and every now and then you will have to overtake other visitors with unsuitable shoes. Good, solid shoes will make the ascent much more fun than thongs, but of course that's up to you.

Once you have climbed the whole distance, you'll have a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside - but the castle itself is quite boring, because only a few walls are left. Still, no visit to the Cathar castles is complete without seeing the memorial stele and just having been up at Montségur. If you only visit one Cathar castle, then don't choose Montségur.

“Bit of a climb - take good shoes!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2013

A stunning ruin of a medieval castle sat over 1000 metres up on top of a rocky mountain. The climb is a bit steep and the path slippery so wear good trainers or boots, a stick would also be useful. The castle itself is steeped in history. To appreciate tis better I would recommend visiting the little museum in the nearby village - it only costs euro 0.5 extra for a combined ticket! You can also eat at a little restaurant in the village.
