“Better than I expected to find, and a lot cheaper.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2012 via mobile

Tak is a pleasant if unexciting town and a good stopping place if you're driving from Bangkok to Chang Mai and don't want to exhaust yourself utterly. It's particularly appealing when you have a chance staying at the Viang Tak for the night. A lot of the rooms have really fine views of the river, and for $33 a night (American breakfast buffet included) they're surprisingly spacious and well-equipped. Staff are helpful, pleasant, and efficient. The breakfast buffet looked better than normal for a provincial hotel, but I wasn't hungry and didn't try it. Restaurant food is passable: just good enough so that the convenience of eating in the hotel outweighed my itch to find something really tasty. Atmosphere at the outdoor tables overlooking the river was most attractive. Air conditioning works fine, bed was comfortable; hot water supply for my shower was not quite nonexistent, but certainly not impressive.

If you intend to visit non-tourist place Tak, this is a comfortable place to stay. Friendly staff, big rooms and pretty clean. However, the rooms and furniture are really old and are ready to be renovated. Also, we wanted a foot massage, but were confronted with a bunch of prostitutes when we entered the hotel's massage salon. Dinner is pretty good, breakfast could be better.

Advise:
* ask for riverview, really nice
* try not to have a room near the karaoke, continues untill midnight
* if you're not looking for some adult fun, don't go to the massage salon

We spent a night here as guest of a local friend. Town is one of the nicer ones in Thailand with wide broad streets and the Ping river is a nice attraction.

Rooms were ok for the price and the view. Be sure to get the river view. Much more interesting than the ones facing the back. The odd thing is that you have to take stairs to the lobby from the carport.

The hotel is close to the street market. Lots of things to see and do early in the morning and also at night. Good street food along the riverside road.

Breakfast was included and was a combination of western and local dishes.

Staff was very friendly and there was complimentary WIFI on all floors and lobby areas. Speed was good enough to video conference on Facetime without too much lag.

I enjoyed my stay in this town and this hotel and would recommend it.

Room Tip: Get the river facing rooms.

Convenient car park right in front of the hotel - but no lift/ramp up to the lobby. Nice lobby area, efficient staff. Best bit was the bedroom - we called to reserve a deluxe room for 1,000 Baht - spacious, big bathroom, amazing views over the river and Tak town centre. 711 store is a short walk down the street, you could also walk down the riverside in the morning/evening when its not too hot. We ate at the hotel restaurant - quite expensive but good food and great location, overlooking the river. As someone else mentioned, though, the swimming pool is in a very public area, right by the lobby, so we didnt use it. Good hotel for an overnight stop in Tak.

I just stay here 2 days ago. It's nice hotel and easy to have dinner near my place. Small swimming pool but not private because it near the lobby. I only don't like the noicy of pub or Karaoke at this hotel.

we stopped here overnight on a trip North - the hotel is typical of asian 3 star - rooms are a little small - bathroom a little run down - seems that all hotels in asia are designed by the same architect with a standard room layout - room was clean - restaurant food was good - even some dinner music - breakfast was OK - pretty standard fare - It was 2 nights before Loy Trathong so the riverside below was a hive of activity with a large market and they were setting up a floating stage for the festivities - Hotel was good value for money and conveniently located - Tak is a good stoppping off point fro a trip to Sukothai Historical Park

If you travelling from Bangkok to Chiang Mai or opposite direction, why not stop at the Viang Tak Riverside Hotel at Tak. It is a great hotel next to the impressive Ping River. I stayed there 2 nights during the Loy Krathong Festival in November 2006. I had a marvellous room facing the Ping River and from my room I could see the Festival and floating lights too. Not only the rooms are fantastic. Also the staff working at the hotel. Everybody was very helpful. In the evening you can go to the Boss Karaoke, or play snooker at the Viang Tak Snooker Club and for the youngers/teenagers and all others there is a disco and/or live band at the Marine Music Hall in the Hotel. If you want to go outside the hotel, you can walk on the boulevard next to the Ping River and enjoy a drink at the big square of Tak. From Tak you can make a trip into the mountains to Mae Sot near the Myanmar border. I can recommend everybody this hotel.
