We camped in the reserve during December 2011. The campsite is located next to a spectacular lake with incredible bird life. A standard campsite with ample shade and functional amenities. However, as the lake is still standing water the mosquitoes at night ruined our experience as it was literally impossible to sit outside, even with every form of repellent imaginable.
The beaches are roughly a 17km drive from the campsite on an exceptionally bad dirt road with very sharp rocks on the surface. Once at the beaches, paradise awaits with white sand on the numerous beaches, privicy and spectacular snorkling and swimming spots.
If it was not for the quality of the dirt roads in and en route to the reserve, we will definitely visit de Hoop again. However, unless this is addressed I would advise anyone, regardless of your vehicle or type of tyre to rather consider alternatives as I lost two tyres there. Speak to the guys at Hi-Q and Supaquick in Swellendam and Bredasdorp if you want to confirm my view...
