“Amazing scenery but an exceptionally bad road to the reserve and in the reserve itself makes another visit to de Hoop not very l”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2012

We camped in the reserve during December 2011. The campsite is located next to a spectacular lake with incredible bird life. A standard campsite with ample shade and functional amenities. However, as the lake is still standing water the mosquitoes at night ruined our experience as it was literally impossible to sit outside, even with every form of repellent imaginable.

The beaches are roughly a 17km drive from the campsite on an exceptionally bad dirt road with very sharp rocks on the surface. Once at the beaches, paradise awaits with white sand on the numerous beaches, privicy and spectacular snorkling and swimming spots.

If it was not for the quality of the dirt roads in and en route to the reserve, we will definitely visit de Hoop again. However, unless this is addressed I would advise anyone, regardless of your vehicle or type of tyre to rather consider alternatives as I lost two tyres there. Speak to the guys at Hi-Q and Supaquick in Swellendam and Bredasdorp if you want to confirm my view...

Thank you for the update. I have just returned from De Hoop - The internal roads at De Hoop have just been upgraded The roads to the reserve are currently being resurfaced. It has been proposed that 11km of the road will be tarred this year. We look forward to seeing you back at De Hoop.

“Exquisite tranquility”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2012

This reserve is a firm favourite when we visit the Cape. The beaches are beautiful, the rock formations dramatic and we almost always see whale, lots of them. You can swim, walk, snorkel and if you have a few days - 5 exactly, you can do the Whale Trail a superb slack packing trip. De Hoop is a really special place, so glad it's a marine reserve, long may it last.

“The sand dunes were a mighty stunning site”

We loved going here. We are not big hikers but drove do the sand dunes car park and had some fun on the dunes, walking there and taking in the beautiful gorgeous view. Would totally recommend.

“A Beautiful Spot on Earth”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2011

Everything about this place is great. Beaches and dunes are fantastic. Whales and Zebras are all over. Even the drive to get to De Hoop was cool. We ended up going through Malagas and took the pontoon ferry over the river. Very cool since three guys pull you across the river.

“Whales, Seals, Zebras!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2011

We thought we might be able to see a whale when visiting DeHoop - and saw dozens and dozens, and quite near to the coastline and beaches! Absolutely amazing! (The kids still got bored after some time and started to build a sandcastle in the waves... :-) By the way: Great beaches too! And I've now got a oicture of my sons digging int front, and a whale greating in the background!)

In addition we saw zebras, bonteboks, bamboos, ostriches and a lot of colourful birds in the nature reserve. They offer different guided walks and bike tours, which are free if you stay over night. And you should both: Stay and book the walks, very interesting and educative. We did the bike tour, about 2 hours, easy biking with many interesting stops and explanations.

We stayed 2 days in DeHoop and had a very cozy and lovely cottage. Restaurant is very good too, we enjoyed our breakfasts and 3 course dinners. There is a little shop at the reception, where you can buy everything for your own BBQ/braai or other meals at your cottage.

Friendly and helpful staff at the front desk and at the restaurant.

DeHoop is quite a drive from N2, about an hour dirt road. There are nearly no signs, so a raod map or navigation is very helful.

If travel to/from east, you should travle via Malgas, with a little ferry, powered by muscular strength.
