“So wonderful that I cried a bit when we checked out”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2010

Beautiful setting and historically fascinating. We had a fantastic honeymoon upgrade which even included a complimentary dinner ("as many courses as you wish madame") and a bottle of house wine (from their vineyard). Very romantic - rooms were furnished with antiques and there is quite a gothic feel in places. We had intended to do lots of sightseeing but the hotel was such a lovely place to hang out that we spent most of our time by the pool. We were made very welcome, the food was great as was the wine. One of the nice things about this hotel was the fact it had a posh restaurant but also a more casual and cheaper pool restaurant and bar. There are also fantastic spa treatments. A really good place to go and chill out / revive. Great service - rooms were serviced 3 times a day.
If you're looking for an Italian style luxury treat for a special occasion this place is lovely. We will be back!

We first stayed at La Suvera 17 years ago and have made return visits every year , it never fails to delight. 10 years ago we introduced two special friends to La Suvera and they too have been returning every year. 'Relais La Suvera through its setting in the beautiful Tuscan hills and its dedicated and professional staff, provides the perfect oasis in which to spend some time out from the hectic pace of modern life. The hospitality and attention to detail of the owners and staff create an atmosphere of relaxation and calm increasingly rare in the 21st century. The luxury of a stay at La Suvera is enhanced by the setting of the beautiful historic building overlooking rolling countryside. We have tried a number of rooms all of which have been beautifully furnished and are very comfortable. They have a fantastic new chef, the Tuscan food is imaginative, delicious , beautifully served by the courteous staff and with the ambience of the Olivera restaurant ,evenings at La Suvera are memorable.

all amenities including swimming pool
not far from San Gimignano and Siena
breakfast is offered in a former olive oil mill

This hotel is absolutely beautiful – full of character and history. This hotel is no Four Seasons – it’s unique and very different from the usual modern 5* LCD screen hotel rooms. If you’re looking for a romantic place for a weekend this is the perfect spot. I would only recommend a weekend stay as any longer you might get bored. Ignore all the negative comments as those reviewers clearly suffer from tunnel vision and lack culture and should have booked the typical boring Marriott, Hilton or Four Seasons.

We visited Relais la suvera a few years ago now (just started writing reviews !!) and it is one of our top 3 hotels we have stayed in. Just the most magical, beautiful, romantic setting imaginable - out of this world. The staff are wonderful, they think of everything and the little touches are great. The room we had was magnificent - so much character and the grounds have to be seen to be believed. Walking around the tiny little village was lovely. The pool area is stunning but the most outstanding feature is the spa - a romantic candlelit grotto. The hotel is full of character and history (one of the buildings is a museum !!) A real hidden gem - one of our favourite holidays of all time - a definite must see.

The building its very interesting and beautiful, thought the hotel lacks of nice views and you can see they have not invest much in the last years. The hotel is too expensive for what it is, rooms are very old and the decorations style even if it is old, it is not well kept and the price is not fair for the quality of rooms and service you get.
I would rather recommend staying at La Fontanelle, it is another story....

We stayed at Relais La Suvera for our honeymoon and were looking for a relaxing holiday in the height of luxury. What we got certainly didn’t live up to our expectations or the pictures in the brochure / internet.

ROOMS
The rooms are very cluttered with furniture that would be lovely to look at in a museum, but not to use on a day to day basis. The first impression that you get is that they have found a load of stuff in the garden shed and thrown it together in the room because it looks old – bugs and woodworm included. There is no complimentary water or tea / coffee making facilities in the room (which would have been nice bearing in mind the tea and water is so expensive at the bar …. mmm maybe that’s why).
The bathroom did not fit in with the rest of the room. It was very downmarket, with exposed pipe work, a standard bath and flaky paint on the walls. You would have found a better shower in a 1* hotel and the shower curtain clings to your legs! I have a better bathroom and shower at home, but would have expected better there because of the prices.
They do change towels and bedding every day which is good …. Depending on your environmental views.

FOOD
There are 2 areas to eat at the hotel. A formal restaurant and the bar becomes a flambé restaurant at 7:30pm. For the duration of our stay (10 days) neither menus changed. The food at both restaurants was basic, but due obviously to different chefs it was good some nights and not the others. It was also very expensive for what you are getting – a very small basic tomato pasta is 18 euros and a small fillet steak with 10 tiny chips is 28 euros. Yet again we were expecting so much more, every piece of literature you read about the place raves about their cooking as if it’s Michelin * – which it isn’t.
Drinks are also very expensive; you are looking at 6 euros for a small beer and 35 euros for a nice bottle of wine – which we found the next day in the local supermarket for 10 euros.

POOL, SPA AND GARDENS
The Pool and Spa were lovely, clean and relaxing. The gardens looked fairly unused and tired. The views of the surrounding area were lovely if you could see past the overgrown trees.

SERVICE
All housekeeping and waiting staff are very friendly and helpful. They really do everything for you.

SURROUNDING AREA
The small towns and villages are lovely to walk around. Sienna and Florence are very close. A car is a necessity as you need to be prepared to drive everywhere. I would recommend visiting and dining in these places …. In fact just get another hotel there.

SUMMARY
This is the first review we have ever made on any hotel, but we felt the need to in this case. The Relais La Suvera is certainly not an upmarket hotel, it is tired, rundown and you get the impression that it is ‘punching above its weight’. It is outclassed in so many areas - even when compared to some 3* hotels. If like us you are an average Joe, save your money and book another hotel. If however you like the appearance of wealth, you will love it here. The snobbery and pouts of some of the other guests are unbelievable and yet very amusing!
