“Elegance and refinement in Le Colline Senesi”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2011

Having visited La Suvera more than 14 times it is remarkable to observe the consistency in the high standards that the owners have established. Every detail of your stay will be perfect.

The lovely dining area for lunch is only steps from the romantic pool which is framed by trees and the centuries old villa. One can enjoy exacting service and flawless cuisine in the most relaxed atmosphere. Beautiful walks through the countryside are right outside your door and the room furnishings which have been collected by the owners, rather than ordered over the telephone, are an antidote for globalization. The rooms are each different, overwhelmingly comfortable and have the best air conditioning system in Italy.

The gold standard in personal service rendered unobtrusively and sincerely!

Our 40th anniversary trip to Europe was carefully planned to provide a balance of sophistication in smaller, boutique like properties. We were not disappointed with La Suvera. The ambience, the staff, the attention paid to detail was all appreciated. We were staying early in the season and I noticed how well the Senior staff mentored the seasonal, young employees. It was a pleasure to see the pride in providing quality of service and imparting this quality to those entering the hospitality industry.

An ancient castle Relais La Sovereign was built in the Middle Ages, 30 kilometers from the famous equestrian competitions Tuscan city of Siena, close to such rich culture of cities like Florence and San Gimignano.

The appearance of the lock fits perfectly into the overall atmosphere of the province of Chianti, where the green fields, orchards and vineyards covered with hills alternate with stately buildings of the Italian Middle Ages.
Built as a fortress, like the rest of the family castles of the Middle Ages, Relais La Sovereign in the early 16th century passes into the possession of Pope Julius II, the great patron and lover of good architecture and painting. On his orders, stern and practical building was converted into a summer residence, which satisfies the tastes of the influential pontiff. Over the restructuring of the castle served one of the architects of St. Peter's in Rome, Baldassare Peruzzi.
Modern amenities are combined with the rich decoration of rooms, original sculptures, murals and paintings of the Renaissance.

Spending a week or two in La Suvera has been the centre piece of our Family's summer for the past 9 years. We have enjoyed the historical splendor of rooms and suites in the 16th century Villa Papale as well as the country house atmosphere in the annexes. The magic of La Suvera is unique and difficult to capture in words. It arises from a rare combination of a historical site, exquisitely tastefully furnished rooms, the services of a luxury hotel and the peace, tranquillity and beauty of an archetypical Tuscan castle and garden in which the swimmingpool has taken the place of the ancient pond. The outdoor bar area is right in the middle of this beutiful scenery and while you sip your pre-dinner cocktail you will enjoy the most spectacular sunsets over the Elsa valley...and then it is time for a wonderful dinner on the terrace in front of the old Olive press facing the serene sillhouette of the 16th century castle.....Looking forward to next year's stay in La Suvera keeps us going for the rest of the year!

For four years running we have holidayed at La Suvera ! I know of few places in the world where the beauty of the place is matched by the outstanding quality of the service and the food. Marchese & Marchesa Ricci are to be congratulated for maintaining this year after year - no easy task.
The front of house staff are knowledgable and always helpful the restaurant staff equally so - and in the spa they lucky enough to have the finest masseur and masseuse / beautician in the world ! The rooms are all individually decorated, and with great style. La Suvera certainly does not have a hotel feel about it - more like staying in a very grand country house - which is just what it is !
We look forward to returning next Summer!
