The place is well connected from Shillong and it takes about an hour to reach. As per Wikipedia, this is the tallest waterfall of India & the 4th largest in the world with a height of over a 1000 Ft. The name Nohkalikai in Khasi means ‘Jump of Ka Likai’. Initially we could only hear the fierce waterfall roaring as the vision was blocked with clouds as it has just rained. Once the clouds cleared, the view was beautiful. There are some eateries around the falls where you may grab a bite. At the entrance women sell fresh fruits (must try the pineapple), spices (black pepper, cinnamon) and pickles. Since it had rained, the clouds were hanging low and walking there gave a feel of cutting through the clouds.
The legend associated with this place is agonising. It’s a sad tale of a woman named Likai who re-marries after the death of her first husband so that their daughter has a father who can look after her. The 2nd husband is jealous of the attention the daughter got from her mother. One day when Ka Likai is out for work, the husband kills the daughter, cuts and cooks her for meal. When Ka Likai comes home she searches for her daughter and also asks her husband about her who refuses to know any details. The husband suggests that the Ka Likai first have her meal and then look out for her daughter. After the meal, when the mother sees the daughter’s fingers in the basket, she realises that she was made to eat her own daughter’s flesh. In despair she runs towards this waterfall and throws herself off this cliff and hence the name 'Noh-ka-likai'.
