The Rex hotel is a nice hotel to stay in .. likely the nicest in Kalamata short of the couple of top beach resorts nearby. They were prompt in returning booking inquiries and do check as the price varied greatly depending on which internetsite you choose. All in all a good value. The hotel is well maintained and the staff was helpful. The buffet for breakfast was what you'd expect for a included meal. There are lots of cafe's and stores nearby some open quite late. Just two minor problems with our stay - they had our room type wrong (saying we'd booked a single - one person room) Hmmm I really don't I've have done that given there were two of us resulting in an additional charge of 96 Euros and while we where there during an apparent heatwave the air conditioning was barely cool at best. They checked it twice and we were advised that was all they could do as they were fully booked. rather than move, we made do. Essentially sleeping under the breeze of the air-conditionaing vent.

We arrived at the Hotel Rex exhausted after driving the longest and slowest 60k across the mountains from Sparta and then having great difficulty finding it in the one way streets and oddly divided roads. It was a little more expensive than we wanted but we couldn't face getting back in the car to search for another hotel.
The Rex felt more business oriented than tourist but the rooms were pleasant, internet was available at a price and the typical buffet breakfast was included.
Nice outdoor restaurants 100m up the road in the platia but be prepared, none take credit card!

Even though Kalamata olives are renowned - why would anybody want to go to Kalamata and stay in town, rather than an oceanside location? Kalamata is famous for the special, salty tastiness of their olives and the purity of its olive oil. There are intersting archeological sights nearby, and it's an easy ride from Patras or Athens to this city nestled between high mountains and the ocean. It's not the prettiest city in Greece, but it's authentic. Besides, my wonderful relatives live there, so it's a pleasure to see them every so many years and when I return home to the USA - "He who has olive oil has friends." My friends and neighbors once they sample the purity of this unadulturated, dark green olive oil, none other compares favorably. So where do my friends stay who do the trip with me - one recently stayed at a seaside hotel, which was ok, but in town there's a speial, totally renovated heritage property - the Rex Hotel. The hotel has been gutted and totally upgraded tastefully. A classy, old fashioned, traditional Greek hotel that's modern inside, the rooms are understated, comfortable, with mini bars, tv, most have balconies, soundproofed windows, nice decor, views of town or mountains, good modern bathrooms. The breakfast can be taken outside on the patio of the ground floor restaurant or inside. Both may or may not have smokers nearby. The food is quite decent, the front desk staff is friendly and quickly remember one's presence. They're helpful for guiding one to the right bank to cash travelers checks or to places of local interest. There's a beauty/barber shop adjoining the lobby area. Internet cafes are within a block. We were very surprised to see beautiful sidewalk cafes nearby, which have quite an active nightlife during decent weather - a couple of the sidewalk cafes had rattan chaise sofas under awnings with chic lighting fixtures - the kind of place one might expect (and not find) in Cannes or Carmel, but here it was in downtown Kalamata! If you're fortunate to find or know someone, visit the nearby olive groves and have someone explain the beauty and lore of this fine food. And dining in Kalamata is good - nearby the hotel one can savor fresh fish, uncommonly delicious vegetables, cheeses and meats. The custard dessert Ghalatobouriko is supposedly the best anywhere here - just make sure to insist on trying it in Greece - your tastebuds will find old standby Baklava never to be as good. The Rex hotel is pleasant, centrally located, well worth a few days off the tourist track. Getting to Kalamata is three hours by bus and inexpensive, or about euro 130 by taxi or if you're a masochist you can take the train. European charters operate during summertime, taking vacationers to the nearby sea side area. We preferred being in town at the Rex. Breakfast is included.
