Many visitors to the palace in Gwalior Fort ignore the little museum on the left. This is a great shame because it is an interesting collection containing a couple of masterpieces of Indian sculpture.
Reviews in guide books say that the museum is poorly labelled but that information is out of date and the collection now has informative labels on the sculptures inside the museum.
Two cases at the end of the main room contain three masterworks. One is a very rare and beautiful representation of the birth of Krishna in prison surrounded by guards, It is a tender and moving work. In the same case the head of Vishnu is breathtakingly beautiful.
Another illuminated case depicts a loving couple of deities. Again it is a work of great tenderness.
Alas you are not allowed to photograph inside the museum grounds so you can photograph the outside sculptures from the wrong side of the fence.
