Just back from a fantastic 2 wk holiday at the Mandalena. Our 1 bedroom apartment was spacious enough for us, clean, bright with everything we needed. The beds were comfy enough (my husband and 7 yr old had the bedroom and myself and our 5 yr old the bed settee/pull out bed). Our room was cleaned every day and we had plenty of clean towels. The air con was good value at 5 euros per day (we've paid double that elsewhere). We were on the 2nd floor and had a lovely view of the pool, sea and the hilltop church.
The receptionists were so helpful and friendly (sorry about our kids eating all the sweets!).
The pool was great and there were no shortage of sunbeds at anytime of the day (they came with padded toppers). Behind the pool area was a tennis court which reception supply tennis rackets and balls free of charge. The hotel guests were a nice mix Greek Cypriots, British and other nationalities whom most were friendly - we met some lovely people.
Nearby there are plenty of lovely restaurants and shops, a water park 5 mins walk away (we went twice), the Protarus main strip was a 10 min walk away although we mostly took a reasonably priced taxi due to our 5 year old's reluctance to walk! There was also a regular bus service outside the hotel which went to Protarus main strip, Ayia Napa and the other direction Paralimni.
But what helped to make our holiday so memorable was the lovely Bob, Christina and their family who run the pool bar/restaurant. We are very shocked at some of the rude, vindictive and hurtful comments people have wrote regarding them - in our opinion very wrong comments - our experience was quite the opposite. Bob was a top genuine bloke with an obvious pride and love of his family and a great sense of humour (which some people obviously didn't get). Christina always had a smile for us and her food was lovely - we ate there every day for breakfast and sometimes lunch or dinner (my favourite was the moussaka and the baked feta and tomatoes, my husbands was the mixed kebab). As for the nasty comments on hygiene - of course Christina was hot - she was working in a boiling hot kitchen at who knows what temperature whilst it was sometimes 36 degrees outside! We'd trust her hygiene practices whilst preparing food without doubt, handwashing would not be seen outside as would have been done inside the kitchen! And as for the family eating at the same place as the guests - so what!!! Why shouldn't they?? Georgina was a lovely cheery helpful lady who is now a friend. The rest of the family were also lovely and our boys loved playing with Bob and Christina's grandchildren. Denise who helps out regularly was a star too - she always had a chat and a laugh with us and was never abrupt with us apart from in a joking way when my husband would try to jokingly wind her up. A huge thanks to Bob's and family for making our youngest boy's birthday by treating him to a card, a "Happy Birthday" song and a huge gorgeous cake - his little face was a picture. We'll miss them all but will certainly be staying in touch.
We'd definitely go back to the Mandalena - if you'd like a family friendly holiday with decent accommodation and lovely people then this is for you. If you want 5 * with no personal touch then pay a fortune and go elsewhere!
