“Good Hotel if you travel with children”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2010

Conclusion:

All in all I am very satisfied with the stay, as we got what we expected, and for a reasonable price. Rooms are good, the breakfast is good, the dinner buffet is not recommended, as there are much better alternatives surrounding the hotel. The activity clubs for children are recommended for 7-12 year olds (Super Kids), but not so much for active 5-6 year olds (BamseKlubben). Staff is mostly helpful, but during dinner time they are very busy and not all that helpful. The pool area is quickly occupied in the morning so you need to be an early riser to get a sun bed. Snorkeling and swimming possibilities in the sea are excellent. Tennis court is acceptable (I recommend bringing your own tennis racket). Many good alternative restaurants exist in the vicinity of the hotel.

Booking:
Easy online booking from the Norwegian TUI operator StarTour (www.startour.no). Only thing that was suboptimal was that we ordered the Super Kids activity club for both our children (6 and 9), but it was only registered for our 9 year old, as it was a 7-12 club. This was silently bypassed by the booking application, so our 6 year old was without an activity club. However the StarTour guides where able to find a place for him at the Bamseklubb (3-6 year olds).

Apartment:
We stayed in a two room apartment. The apartment consisted of bathroom with bathtub, bedroom, kitchenette and living room (combined).

The bathroom was clean and roomy enough for two people at once. Good size bathtub.

The Bedroom was big with enough closet space. The bed was actually two beds set together to form a kind of double bed, furthermore they had wheels and tended to separate. Under the bed sheets there where protective bed sheets which contained plastic which where really uncomfortable and had to be removed, but overall they where quite comfortable.

We did not use the kitchenette much, as we had breakfast included and ate the rest of our meals outside, but it contained everything as promised when ordering the stay. A round table with four chairs was a good place to play board games with the children.

The living room part was used as bedroom for the children with two extra beds placed there.

Television was a small CRT set with poor reception and sound.

Meals:

We did not go for all inclusive, but we had breakfast included. The breakfast was good with everything you expect for a breakfast buffet. The service was good, and the staff was quick in removing used plates.

We tried the dinner buffet one night, but where really disappointed. The staff was clearly stressed and some of them plain rude. Drinks took a long time to be served, used plates where not removed. The food was not all that great either.

Based on this I am glad we did not order the all inclusive package.

There are a lot of restaurants in the vicinity of the hotel (5-15 minute walk) which are of various qualities. I also recommend a short cab ride to Protaras which also has a lot of restaurants.

Pool and activities:
The pool area consists of a small pool for toddlers (water depth 50cm) and a larger pool with a water depth of 140cm. The pool area is a bit small for the number of people in the hotel, which means that you need to be ready to be in pool area at around 8am to secure sun beds. However there is just a 40 meter walk to the beach. Excellent snorkeling possibilities in very clear waters with a great variety of fish to be spotted. Be mindful of the sea urchins which are everywhere (use bath shoes).

The Super Kids club for 7-12 year old children was a good activity for our 9 year old who was really pleased. They had a good time and played basket, football and other games, and also made friends for the rest of the stay (and after).

The Bamseklubb for 3-6 year olds was not as good. Our 6 year old attended the first day, but refused to go back the second day because it was so boring. I accompanied him for a while the second day, and I must agree to this. This was not a good activity for the children to make new friends. It is more of an offer to the parents than to the children. Many of the smallest children where sobbing the entire time, and the activity leaders did their best comforting them. The day was laid out with drawing, singing, outside food break (in the shade) and ending session with dancing and singing. I cannot recommend this activity club to your child if your child is of the uncertain type or the active type. We tried to change to Super Kids for our 6 year old, but this was unfortunately not possible due to capacity.

The gym is ok for most use and contains what you need to do all basic exercises. There is also a tennis court which is worn and a bit cramped, but useful. For a €20 deposit you can rent rackets for €6 an hour.

Louis Althea Beach is primarily a family resort and as such there are typical 99% families with two children on average 5 years old there. They are also a Blue Village resort rated 4+ (by Star Tour, the nordic TIU affiliate).

BOOKING
Booking this hotel was very easy, we did it through a Star Tour office in our hometown. Four days prior to departure we got a deal for 2 adults and 2 children, all inclusive package, Super Kids/Bamse Club activities and with partial sea view at appx. EUR 2000. I think this was half the normal price.

5/5 stars

THE ROOM
We booked a one bedroom with partial sea view. Little did we know that it overlooked directly the restaurant and center stage where there were (very good) shows each night from 20-22. But not exactly what we had in mind though. It was also set up or for the disabled and as such did not have a bathtub or anywhere to put our toiletries. Worst of all was probably the fact that there was fungus on some parts of the floor next to the shower. When we confronted the reception area about this they said it was probably just grown in dirt (!). The room had a small CRT television and ok cooking facileties. The beds themselves were comfortable enough AFTER we took away the plastic bed sheets that were laid there as some sort of protection from children peeing in bed. The aircon did not work properly, it was either freezing cold or blasting heat so we didn't use it although we really needed it with night temps at around 25 celsius.

2/5 stars

ALL INCLUSIVE PACKAGE/FOOD
Traveling with children this was the first time we have tried a holiday with an all inclusive package. And the format itself was rather appealing, especially since our main goal was to sun and swim as much as possible on the resort itself. No need to worry about where or when to eat. As such it worked out great. BUT - one would think that in 2009 there would be a wide variety of not only ecological/local foods, but also a better selection for children than the usual fried foods in general which is very unhealthy. I like to serve healthy food for my family at home and would want the same on a holiday. the healthy choice at Louis's all inclusive buffets were mostly salads, which isn't too easy to serve children...Apart from that there were free drinks (both with and without alcohol), slush and ice cream all day long.

3/5 stars

POOL AND RECREATIONAL FACILITIES
There are one main pool and a very small toddlers pool. The main pool is 140cm deep everywhere and not very large. This means two things. If you want a sunbed you need to get up at 6.30 in the morning due to the fact that there are som many families there. And you need to be in the water with your children unless they are capable swimmers. When they have so many families at this resort they really should have better and larger pool areas. On a positive note, there was just a few metres to the beach, with excellent snorkling and swimming areas. I have never seen such clear water anywhere and plenty of fish to see as well. Just mind the sea urchins.
As for the ither recreational facilities there were a beach volleyball area, a games room with outdated/worn out facilities and a childrens play area. In the basement there was a gym that would be than good enough for most people.

2/5 stars

NIGHT TIME SHOWS
The people from 2Entertain really did very good shows every night, both for the children with Coco the Clown, Bamse or general song/dance routines later for parents. They started every night at appx. 20:00 and ended at 22:00.

4/5 stars

SUM UP
We booked this holiday thinking it was an 4+ resort. We have been many places around Europe before with children and we have always stayed at resorts with 4 stars or more. Louis Althea Beach was far from the advertised 4+ compared to these.

We stayed at Althea Beach Hotel for one week and we loved it! Great two room app with every day cleaning and air condition. Beach was small with stones but water was just great and pool area is very welcoming. We have not had an all inclusive option so I have no idea how the food at the hotel restaurant was, but I assume it is ok anyway. Very quite, which is great and if we felt for show we just went to the English hotel nearby with Elvis shows etc. or took taxi to the Fig Tree Bay centre nearby. So all in all - A class apps!

We stayed at the new Louis Althea Beach during July of 2004. It a catergory "A" apartment type hotel catering more or less exclusively to the Scandinavian market towards families with children as its segment. We booked it through a subsidiary of TUI in Sweden.

Hotel was built in 2003 so the property was new and pleasant. Our room was large and the balcony with its full seaview was fantastic. The small beach or cove in front of the hotel was adequate for our needs and it was fun to snorkel there. The grounds were well kept and they had programmes everyday to keep the children and their parents entertained.

Still, there were some serious misses and as always it's the staff or rather some of the staff that was the problem.

Service at the reception was in general surly and brusque. One had the feeling that one was checking into some third world 2nd rate hostel than a brand new hotel. Reluctance and disinterest dominates the service.

I had to pry all the relevant information from the check-in staff e.g. Where is the room? No porter was provided and it was a long walk. There were trolleys but no one told me where they were. Room-safe, beach towel, TV remote...all these were items that demanded a CASH deposit. A credit card won't do. I had to once again ask her about all these items as no voluntary information was provided. Basically it was a case of here's your room key. Take it and leave me alone.

F&B staff were friendly and courteous. It's just the reception people. They don't greet their guests and service with a smile is something totally alien to some of them.

Not a bad place to stay as the water at the beach was clear and warm. But some of the service was under par. A real pity I reckon.
