My partner and I stayed at the Golden Coast on a Fully Inclusive basis at the beginning of May 2008 with a group of 14 who had travelled for my nephew’s wedding.
The majority of us had booked to stay at Kouzalis Beach but at the last minute we were moved to the Golden Coast. We weren’t disappointed because this was a more expensive, better rated hotel and the other members of our party were there anyway. Good for us but not for them as they had paid a considerable amount more to stay there! We travelled with Argo holidays; these have now been taken over by Libra. Our flight times and airlines also changed considerably and we ended up flying with First Choice Airlines. This was also a bonus as we got free meals on the plane, something that we wouldn’t have done originally.
Our party travelled from Manchester and arrived at Larnaca late evening. It took us ages to find our Argo/Libra rep who then just gave us a number of a coach which we had to find for ourselves. Once we found the coach we struggled to tell the driver that we were now all staying at Golden Coast and not Kouzallis. This was very difficult as he did not speak English and we did not speak Greek and there was no rep to accompany us. We finally arrived at the Golden Coast after about 45 minutes and were checked in by a member of the entertainment staff (Andy) who did very well under the circumstances. We were all very hungry and thirsty, we were told later when we finally saw our rep that they should have provided at least some sandwiches and cold drinks as we were fully inclusive.
Our rooms were very nice. Me and my partner stayed in a block outside of the main hotel which gave good side sea views but some of our party were not so lucky and they were given rooms in the main hotel that overlooked the back and had no views. Even the bride and groom to be were not given the upgrade they were promised and had the worst views of all! The rooms reminded me very much like staying in a hotel chain bedroom such as Ibis or Holiday Inn, they were very clean and modern.
The hotel facilities, grounds and pool area were excellent. It is located on a little marina with a pier that has a little church at the bottom. Couples can get married there or in the hotel grounds itself. There were lots of weddings taking place at the hotel the week we were there and they did look great but they did not get a lot of privacy. The ceremony took place near the pool area and then their receptions were held in another area of the hotel where sunbathers had to walk past on their way to the toilets. There was only one set of toilets in the whole hotel; these were used if you were out at the pool or having lunch or dinner inside the restaurant.
My nephew and his fiancé had their ceremony at Protaris Town Hall followed by a reception at a lovely hotel in the town. They had a horse and carriage to take them to the reception and they said how lovely everyone was stopping to wish them well on their way and all the cars beeped their horns as a mark of respect. Golden Coast is a great place to take pics, we all got some fab photos of the bride and groom standing on the pier with the sea and the little church behind them.
We all had a great time at Golden Coast and the staff were great, especially the entertainment staff Benny, Victor and the rest who got everyone up playing games everyday and got to know us all by name. They even came to wave us off when we left.
The only disappointment with the hotel was the food. We all commented that it wasn’t very good and sometimes you didn’t really know what you were putting on your plate. Some nights there would be meat based dishes but nothing to go with them and then the next night there would be vegetable type dishes but nothing to go with them either. You did get to pull your own glass of Stella and wine from the barrel so things weren’t that bad!!
The snacks around the pool in the day were ham, cheese or tuna doorstop sandwiches or tuna filled pitta breads. These went down great with a strawberry milkshake and Malibu!
Some of our party ventured out a few times by taxi into Protaris and Ayai Napa and one night we all walked into Panera for a few drinks. It was about a 15 minute walk by the main roads but later discovered it was a lot nearer if you walked parallel to the beach! A taxi ride to Protaris cost around 20 euros but that was for a large 7 seater taxi.
On the last night, to be romantic, me and my partner ventured across the road to the little tavern called Mikrolimano. It was so nice and was run by a Cypriot family Mary and Chris. Chris made me a proper cocktail (called a Viagra!) that nearly knocked me off my stool! It really made me feel that all the cocktails that I had in Golden Coast were probably very watered down. We wish we had visited Mikrolimano early during our holiday because it was a very friendly place and even though we did not have a meal the people who were eating there said how great it was. I would really recommended this place if you are only bed and breakfast at Golden Coast or fully inclusive and want a break from the food. They even do wedding receptions here if you want to go for a tradional Cypriot type celebration.
I would definitely go back to Golden Coast but not on a Fully Inclusive package and also with First Choice. Their reps were always around and helped us even though we did not go with them. I would also recommend booking a package with good flight times. Our journey back from Larnaca was very bad, we were delayed considerably due to the overload of holidaymakers in the airport and the baggage conveyors breaking. We queued for nearly 2 hours just to check in and get our bags through. This then had a knock on effect to the time our flight left. All this on top of a 5 hour flight was not good.
