“Fabulous time at the Tunturi!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2013

We stayed at the Hotel Tunturi from 17-19 December 2012 - our party was two adults and two children aged 14 and 6. We were in a 1 bedroom apartment with private sauna a short walk from the main building so all is not lost if you're not in the Geilas wing! ;-). We travelled with Esprit Santa's Lapland, and it was an excellent experience.

The room was clean and comfortable and very warm (a little too warm, in fact, as we realised after we'd all had a sauna!). The hotel food is good and plentiful; salads, fish, chips and meatballs for children, cooked and continental breakfasts in the mornings. The beds were comfortable but we were too busy and excited to do much sleeping!

Sadly, we didn't see the Northern Lights even on our snowmobile adventure as it didn't stop snowing, but that didn't spoil the holiday. There's an excellent (and free) toboggan run just outside the village, the activity day provided by Esprit was great and our 6 year old was speechless for quite some time after meeting Father Christmas (who was, of course, absolutely the real one) which is something that never happens!

It's never cheap to travel to Lapland to see Father Christmas but we felt that Esprit and Hotel Tunturi offered good value for money. We'd love to go back and would be happy to stay in this hotel again.

We booked the gielas wing of the tunturi for December 2012 with inghams with my husband and 4 and 7 year old. This is the newer wing and worth the upgrade. The hotel and room were amazing, very modern, clean and spacious. Lobby to bar where breakfast was served was gorgeous. Main meal was served in the tunturi wing which is a little tired but ok. Food was basic but ok. Gala meal was fantastic.

The place itself is small and say to get around, lots to do but very expensive to eat out!!

Reindeer, husky and snow mobile are a must however I would not recommend the santa's secret hideaway, waste of money and o magic at all!

Just returned from 3 night Thomson Santa trip, 2 adults and 2 children. Really not sure how to rate this hotel, as we stayed in Gielas wing, which is 200m from the main building (and reception) and whilst the room was great, the atmosphere in this part was lacking as it was pretty much closed from breakfast until dinner at 1730. So, as most people will only be interested in their room, I've rated that.
So the room was fantastic, much better than I expected. Comfy twin beds and kids slept on large single sofas. The room and bathroom was spacious and modern, good shower, a fab sauna which you could set on a timer to be ready for when you got back, a great heating cupboard for all your wet kit.
Buffet breakfast was adequate, meat eaters would fare better. The Gielas restaurant only opened at 5.30 and personally I thought had an odd menu, veggies dont bother! But the restaurant and bar downstairs in the main part of the hotel was much better and seemed open all day. The reception was also manned all day and they were very helpful.
I'd like to know what their rooms were like, because although I loved the Gielas room, it would have been easier staying in the Tunteri.

Travelled with Thomson for 3 night on 23rd and stayed at the Gielas wing and I have to say that the whole experience was truely amazing.

The Gielas was a lovely spotless hotel that I could not find fault with and would fully recommend especially with the sauna after the long cold days. The transfer is short and scenic and the day trip to find Santa and enjoy the reindeer and Husky rides was everything we imagined.

The alcohol prices were high but in my opinion the time is to precious to spend with a hangover and there are far better things to do. Breakfast in the Gielas wing was nice, tea was ok probably the only slight negative as we found it very 'sloppy' with not a great deal for children but it was edible and you wouldn't go hungry. We were still glad to have gone half board as local restaurent prices were very very expensive.

My only real complaint is an issue with Thomson not the hotel when you arrive before even checking in and collecting your luggage all are lead to a room for the 'sell.' Obviously this is a ploy to catch you at your most susceptable, tired, excited and willing to spend that extra few pounds. As a family of 3 adults and 2 children aged 4 we paid £300 for the elf adventure day trip with the promise of seraching for christmas trees, decorating them, good food and a variety of other activities. What we actually paid for was a 5 minutes coach ride down the road to a beatiful local park/wooded area all of which was of no cost to Thomson as they don't provide the snow or trees to then stand there with some cheap school pe equipment including a popped 50p windball to play with eat a hot dog and 2 marsh mellows, walk in a small circle to decorate a twig and watch the elves do some stretches. Yes you sometimes find on a holiday that you paid slightly more for something than it was worth but hey your on holiday. No this was not the case I felt conned by Thomson at paying such a large amount of money for nothing and at the same time waste 4 hours of my families Christmas day. On top of all this there are 2 portable toilets for use, not suitable for young children or anyone for that matter, if I wanted artic wilderness I would have gone to everest an absolute con.

Stayed in the Gielas at the Tunturi in December 2012. Upgraded to the larger room - well worth it. Lovely large room - kids slept on sofas. Had a luxurious feel. Really warm and cosy. Nice sauna. Breakfast was in the Gielas but then we has to go to the main hotel building for dinner. Thought this would be a pain but it was a good opportunity to play in the snow.
The only thing the hotel could improve was the breakfast - really uninspiring and I have a real problem feeding my kids biscuits for breakfast. Food at dinner was really good and good choice Food at gala dinner was great.
We went on the santaslapland.com 3 day break with Esprit. Absolutely brilliant. Really well organised full day of activities on the first full day. We arrived at the activity centre at about 10am and we were there till 5pm. Loads to do. No queuing. Able to go inside and have free hot drinks and food to warm up whenever the kids got cold. Couldn't have been better organised.
Bit disappointed with the gala dinner. Some activities for the children would have been good. I think Thomsons had a disco. The Esprit reps and the elves were fantastic. This really was a dream trip to Lapland. Not at all commercialised and Santa was exactly as I imagined him as a child. My kids will always remember this.
Have never flown Easyjet before and was not looking forward to it. I phoned Esprit and asked if I could pre-book seats and was just told no. I was really worried about the flight and the kids ending up at the opposite end of the plane from us. I needn't have worried - as soon as you check in at the Easyjet deak, there is an Esprit rep standing beside it who then gives you a sticker with your seat numbers on (same seats for coming back) so they ensure that famalies sit together. Had the person explained this when I phoned Esprit it would have taken a lot of the stress out of the build up to the holiday. I spoke to several other parents on the trip who had also been worried about this. I nearly booked with Thomson as I didn't want to fly Easyjet. Esprit really should make a bigger thing in theri marketing to put parents minds at ease.
Also disappointed that the flight left so early on the last day (much earlier than in the brochure), so left hotel pretty much straight after breakfast. If I could do this trip again I would stay the extra day so we could have some free time.

We stayed at the Tunturi (Gielas WIng) in December and what a fabulous holiday we had! Esprit certainly know how to organise a holiday - amazing! The rooms were lovely and the hotel was extremely clean. The main hotel was a 2 minute walk (if that) away! The whole experience is one we will never forget and we would go back tomorrow and stay in the same hotel!! From the start of our holiday meeting the elves at the airport and travelling through the snow to our resort was wonderful. Meeting Father Christmas himself was the highlight and was magical!! We would recommend Esprit and this resort/hotel 100%!!

Room Tip: Definitely book the Gielas wing!!!!

Stayed in the Geilas hotel, room was good sauna in bathroom, drying cabinet, fridge, kettle all in room. The bar/ tea coffee was never opened till 5.30 so had to go elsewhere for drink and snack if you wanted one.
Breakfast was fine in Geilas but you have to go to the Tunturi for evening meal food was ok you won't starve.
The night snowmobile was not as good as we had hoped, nothing but stop and go all the time. Very cold children were freezing make sure they are dressed well.
The scenery was wonderful. We had stayed in Levi last year and I think it was better organised, but nothing really to complain about, would recommend it.

Room Tip: Go for the best you can afford some people were not happy
