“So much more than just a B&B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2013

Highly recommend this one, Clare and Andrew couldn't have been more welcoming and it was a great to be hosted by such lovely people. The breakfast was fantastic and it was great to see the effort that had been put into the room. Our own dressing grown and 5 star hotel touches etc. I'm quite sure this B&B would be hard to better.

Room Tip: Book as soon as you know you want to go, I'm sure this B&B will be popular.

I recently stayed down here on business for 3 nights, and i have stayed in many hotels and guest houses, but to be honest, nothing beats this one....boy oh boy do this couple know what they are doing and really focus on the guest experience! As it was late July and the guest house was full of people on holiday, I was an oddity, but Clare and Andrew really made me feel part of the family.....I stayed in a lovely room overlooking the wonderful garden....and the bathroom had recently been upgraded, and the room had new fluffy towels and lovely bathrobes to relax in...BUT the best bit? Fresh milk in the room on arrival, nice fresh biscuits (not packaged) and a personalized welcome note with a small pack of retro sweets!!!!!! Blimey.....what a nice touch!!! Andrew then told me in great detail where to go and eat in the evening, and the local Indian was top notch, the Spice Villa........breakfast was a pleasant surprise,,,,a full buffet laid on with fresh juices, many types of yoghurt, 3 cereals, and fresh fruit including raspberries and a very snazzy coffee machine for espressos!!!!! Never seen that before at a B and B! And then came the full brekkie......wow! Great sausages, from Axminster I am told....a very generous and well presented breakfast, cooked by Clare, and served by Andrew. In fact everyone in the dining room, and it was busy, all commented as to how good a breakfast it was! All in all? You couldn't have wished for better hosts, a better place, and I notice they are 4 star Visit England? They should be 5 star Visit England!!!!! Well done......I will be back for sure.

Room Tip: Garden view rooms are slightly smaller, but with lovely new linen, bathrobes and new fluffy towels...

I spent a night at the Ammonite Lodge whilst working in the area on business. It’s in a great location with plenty of restaurants within walking distance.
The owners Andrew and Claire were most welcoming and really made me feel at home with refreshments on the delightful patio area at the back. The room was very clean and tidy with many nice touches especially the mini sweet selection, free Wi-Fi and flask of fresh milk for your tea and coffee.
Onto breakfast which finished off my stay with an array of fruits, cereals and jams followed up by one of Claire’s freshly cooked breakfasts. All in all a well run B&B with great hosts which I will be returning to when on business or in the area with the family.

We spent two nights as a family group at Ammonite Lodge to attend a family Wedding at The River Cottage. Great location, easy access to lots of attractions nearby. Taxi ride to The River Cottage, 15mins, so easily placed for this location. Warm welcome with a glass of wine or coffee/tea, gratefully received after a 4 hour journey from Kent. Rooms are comfortable and clean and well appointed. Tasty, full english Breakfast and as much juice and coffee to satisfy, plenty of alternatives, such as cereal or yoghurts etc. What makes this B&B a wonderful place are the owners. Nothing is too much trouble and the atmosphere that this creates is one of comfort and relaxation. Always ready for a chat, Andrew and Claire are surely great characters and dedicated to attention to detail. Also has a guest lounge, so no need to sit in your room, or if you're with a party, a good place to meet. Lovely patio surrounded by mature plants and trees, somewhere to relax and unwind. Andrew and Claire are very knowledgeable about the surrounding area and visitor attractions and are happy to advise on good places to eat or attractions to visit. Should you be considering the Ammonite Lodge for your stay, you will receive the warmest of welcomes and a comfy room, all at a reasonable rate. We wish Andrew and Claire all the best in their new venture, we will surely be back in the future. Keith & Michelle Sole, stayed 31 July 2013.

we had a lovely 3 night stay, Claire and Andrew, made us feel very welcome, nothing was to much trouble, even my husband being in a wheelchair and having limited mobility, didn't phase them even putting a chair in the shower, breakfasts were lovely, couldn't fault anything, when we go and visit our family again for any length of time,we will stay there again.

We came for a short break to the South West and decided Chard was a good location to be fairly close to a lot of attractions in different directions. Even though we arrived fairly late on the first night Andrew & Claire (and their two dogs!) were most welcoming and offered us refreshments to help us wind down after the journey.
The room was very clean and overlooked their lovely patio/garden which was a suntrap during the day. Tea and coffee in the room (fresh milk!!!) and so nice to have wifi.
Breakfast was in a lovely spacious room with a fireplace and original features. Full English was filling and other options for those more health conscious available.
They are in the process of upgrading a family room which will be available soon apparently.
Parking can be a problem as roadside parking is limited to 2 hours although they have access to two spaces at the rear and Andrew pointed out all day free parking in street just around the corner.
On the whole I would definitely recommend Ammonite Lodge and hope to visit again in the near future.

We needed to be in Somerset for a few days after travelling from Abu Dhabi to take our youngest son out of school for the last time. We wanted to make a change from over crowded low budget hotels and thought we would try a B&B instead. We came across the Ammonite Lodge Guest House by chance when reviewing B&B's in the area.

The Ammonite Lodge Guest House is situated at top of Chard high street (the more upmarket part of Chard) opposite the excellent "Chard museum". Chard is not much to write home about but the surrounding countryside is outstanding with a large number of superb country pubs and interesting historical attractions - such as "Forde Abby" and Cricket St Thomas are within easy reach only 10-15 minutes by car. Only 30 minutes away is the Jurassic Coast and the beautiful resort of Lyme Regis.

The accommodation is adequate with comfortable beds and a somewhat quirky en-suite tiny shower unit, basin and toilet. On arrival you get a mini fruit basket, a tray with tea and coffee making facilities (with real milk in a small thermos - none of that UHT stuff you usually get), biscuits and a jug of drinking water. Every room has a mini flat screen TV and guess what they have a very efficient free WiFi service.

The lighting switches turn on an interesting selection of light clusters which can be quite amusing when you switch the lights out to go to sleep. I believe that rewiring is schedule shortly and this will then be a thing of the past.

A fabulous real English breakfast is served in the light and airy dining room, offering a nice selection of cereals, fruit and yoghurt's and a choice of jams and marmalade. Tea or coffee is brought to the table and a huge cooked breakfast of sausages, bacon, fried tomatoes, baked beans and your choice of egg is served. This really makes a welcome change from the endless factory style buffet breakfasts that you have to suffer in most hotels these days. After one of Claire's breakfast you really don't need to eat again until supper.

Andrew and Claire Ashmore both hotelier by trade who have recently given up a life of working with International hotel groups to run the Ammonite are excellent larger than life hosts. They have great knowledge of the surrounding area and are happy to help you plan your day if you have sightseeing in mind. If your really behave yourself the might even offer you a glass of wine on the terrace but you have to be very good to deserve that!!

They are working hard to create something really special for their guests. Whilst we were there the ancient TV in guest lounge was exchanged for a large modern flat screen, complete with HDMI ports etc , great for watching Wimbledon.

I understand that they aim to upgrade all the rooms in time and are converting attic space to provide a large family room.

You must try out the Ammonite Lodge if you are going to the West Country it will a perfect value for money base your holiday. We thoroughly enjoyed it and will certainly be going back there when we are next in the UK.
