“Excellent Return Trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2013

My fishing buddy and i returned for aur 3rd time to Greg and Lupita's perfect "end-of-the-road" fly fishing paradise. Once again, great food, great guides, excellent and varied fly fishing experiences, confortable and spacious accomodations and stimulating conversaitons. the food and boat trips through the mangroves of themselves are worth the trip. Even with windy and sketchy weather, the fishing was execellent -- many bones, several tarpon and shots at permit.Capt. Greg is contemplating a new slogan-- "Too Hard, Too Far, Don't Come...." I agree whole heartedly-- the Punta Allen flyfishing is a treasure tat I hope very few discover. If you want to try it, Club Grand Slam is the place to locate. Jon C.

From the warm welcome when we arrived (late, thanks to Virgin....airlines that is), until we departed 10 days later, we couldn't have had better, friendlier service from Greg (host), Lupita great cook), Maria (service with a smile), and Francisco and Danny (the great fishing guides) who had to put up with our incompetence as we were out with them fishing every day.
Reasons you should visit:
1. The food is authentic and very tasty, and the service is great. Lupita's desserts are to die for.
2. The rooms have everything you need for a fishing and/or Eco Tour trip.
3. Greg looks after all your needs fishing wise and really know his stuff. Thanks for taking the hook out of my finger by the way!
4. The trip to the ruins at Muyil are well worth the trip. Don't miss out on the swim/float down the fresh water river on the way back. We'll never forget it.
5. The fish are all there, Bonefish, Tarpon, Snook, Permit, Cuda's, Jack's etc etc.
6. Nature/Wildlife - It's awesome! We saw - flamingos, pelicans, wood storks, crocodiles, manatees, dolphins, turtles, bats, huge bugs (only dead ones), tropical birds in the jungle who's names we don't know, iguanas, and much more. We even saw 4 different species of flying fish, one was small enough to look like a butterfly and at the other extreme another was about 2 feet across!
7. The fishing guides can take you fishing deep into the mangroves on the Panga (which is a great and safe vessel by the way) and the silence when you are out there is deafening. We heard a frigate bird's wings whooshing as it swooped down to take a fish, and it sounded to us like a plane going overhead...
8. The guides were very friendly and once we had all got to know each other it was a great pleasure to fish with these guys who can spot fish you just can't see for yourself. We'll be back and we hope to fish with F&D again soon.
9. We went out on the ocean a couple of times in the Panga and caught some King and Cero Mackerel, Cuda's and Tuna. It's very safe and Francisco really knows how to handle it. Take some Dry Bags you'll need them!
10. Try the green chilli dip and the pickled Jalapeños with your sandwiches. They're great! We're already copying that idea back home.
We'll certainly be going back soon and can only express our thanks to the whole team for the truly wonderful time we had at Club Grand Slam.

As they (we) say in Punta Allen...."Arriba arriba, andalay andalay!!

My friend and I stumbled across Club Grand Slam last year while looking for a more reasonable alternative to the pricy Belize lodge we had gone to the year before. It was ranked #1 in Punta Allen and completely lived up to the billing, with great guides, great hospitality and great food. We immediately began thinking about a return trip, and booked it for this April, about a month later than in 2012. As our plane landed in Cancun and we looked for Captain Greg Rahe to take us on the 3½ drive to the remote Punta Allen, we wondered if the quality of the experience would live up to the previous year.

Let’s see. Great guides? Check! We fished three days with Francisco and Danny, and then three days with Benito and Jesus, and both teams worked hard and long to find the fish and give us a quality experience. Francisco and Benito are part owners with many years of guiding expertise, and it shows in their dedication to working with their clients. Last year the primary focus was on bonefish, but this year, being a month later, the migratory tarpon had moved into the bay, and it was fascinating to watch the guides work as they took us deep into the dense mangrove swamps to find the fish, finding passages where none seemed to exist. And finding tarpon, too! It was some of the most exciting fishing I have experienced, watching and reacting to a four or five foot tarpon attack the fly and then explode out of the water and shake its head back and forth. And the guides were always at our sides, exhorting us when to strip and set or re-set the hook, when to drop the rod down, when to move it to one side or other of the boat to keep the pressure on the monster fish. I definitely came home with a case of Tarpon Fever. My friend and I also enjoy visiting Mayan ruins, and Benito took us on a couple of side trips, once up the bay to see the ruins at Muyil, and another day to a very isolated but well preserved ruin hidden deep in the mangroves. His fishing expertise was also nicely supplemented by his knowledge of the local natural history, which he obviously worked hard to acquire.

Hospitality? Check! As I mentioned Greg picked us up at the airport personally to take us to Punta Allen, and when we arrived, after getting settled into our room and getting in a little casting practice, Maria brought us the traditional post-fishing margaritas and appetizers, and the routine was on. She and Lupita always made sure that we had what we needed, whether it be corn tortillas with every meal or coffee in the evening with dessert. Coffee and juice were on the table on the upstairs patio promptly at 7 am each morning, followed by a hearty breakfast a half hour later. Greg joined us for conversation over dinner, ranging from fishing to world events, which always seem a little far away in Punta Allen. Truthfully, while at Club Grand Slam you spend most of your time fishing or sleeping, but the hospitality is top notch during the down time.

Food? Double check! I would be completely remiss without emphasizing how delicious every meal is, including the lunches that Lupita sends along with the guides. Each one is different, and she is creative while keeping the authentic, traditional nature of the cuisine. My only regret is that we somehow missed the rotation for her fabulous tres leches cake, but Lupita promised we would get it twice next year!

Back for the third year in a row, we had a top flight experience, as we've come to expect. Greg and Lupita welcomed us as old friends with magagaritas at the ready. Their operation is really solid now, with everything working like a well oiled machine. Lupita's food continues to be the best Mexican food that I've ever had in my life, in the US or in many places in Mexico. It is cooked with creativity and care and served with pride. The only danger is eating too much (or maybe the strong sun makes one's pants shrink). Greg remains a genial, knowledgeable host who takes care of everything. We've now fished multiple days with both of the senior guides Francisco and Benito (who are partners with Greg and Lupita) and several "ayudantes"
and can say for certain that any combination is terrific. The guides have many years of experience and know their varied waters intimately. Most importantly, they consistently put us on fish, no matter what the weather or wind conditions. We caught tarpon in the green rooms and bonefish evrywhere--and had shots at several permit and LOTS of snook (which inexplicalbly would not eat our flies). The variety is astounding and the pressure is extremely light. All this and the experience is a bargain. I've never had a better trip!

I tried bone fishing for the first time last year intending it to be a once in a lifetime experience i.e. bucket list. It was so enjoyable I decided to do it again. On the advice of a friend (Bob posted a review last year) I went to a different lodge, Club Grand Slam. I was not disappointed.
Capt. Greg is the perfect host, Lipita has to be the top chef in Punta Allen, the guides Francisco and Danny were absolutely fantastic. We saw parts of Ascention Bay that other guides only hope to see some day. Can't forget Marie who was there with our daily margaritas. I can't say enough about the overall experience.
I'm going to get a bigger bucket.

Where do i start....my wife and I are avid travellers and fisho's and always try and incorporate a fishing trip in amongst a holiday. After plenty of research our information continually led us to Club Grand Slam. Hospitality is probably not the right word for this place, its more like family. Capt. Greg and Lupita were simply outstanding with Lupita's amazing local cooking (Im talkin entree, main and dessert!!), and breakfast that was ready and waiting the moment our room doors opened! We were actullay there with Sean S and shared many Dos Equis and red wine over fishing stories. Now the fishing, its what we are really there for right? Let me say, i have never seen so many bonefish at every flat, every corner and willing to dominate any artificial! We were only there for 2 days fishing and at the end of day the bonefish tally was 40+! Snook...they were loaded in certain spots and big!!! We are from Australia and snook were similar to our barramundi so we loved chasing them! Im relatively new to fly fishing and the guides Benito and Danny were soo patient with us, i learnt more in 2 days than Id ever imagined. My wife has never even seen a fly rod and the boys managed to hook Alicia up to a bonefish. They did everything in their power to put us onto fish, the more enthusiastic you were, the more they bounced off you. We took 2 spin combos in case we were absolute rubbish at fly fishing and were kept busy with nearly a fish a cast and the boys didnt mind. The people are amazing, the hospitality 11/10 and location is a must see.... Thank you Club Grand Slam, we WILL be back....

This was our first trip to Club Grand Slam and I'm sure there will be more to come (hopefully soon). To sum up our trip, all I can really say is that everything was great! This is what a fishing lodge should be. Everyday at Club Grand Slam held the possibility of being one of our best days out on the water. A lot of credit is due to our guides who from beginning to end of each day worked tirelessly to put us on fish, and they were great company! After fishing all I really want is good food and a clean comfortable bed. Club Grand Slam delivered! They went above and beyond. The food was amazing and there was plenty of it. The room was spotless and the bed was comfortable enough for me to sleep like a baby. Our hosts made sure we were well rested and fed for the next day of fishing.
