The Novotel Bilbao Barakaldo is located just off the main motorway leading to the Bilbao Ferry Terminal at Santurzi. While it's not the most attractive location, next to the motorway and Mega Park retail complex, it does provide an oasis of calm in which to relax after a long drive from Spain's Costas.
The hotel seems relatively new and has a stylish public areas on the ground floor. The rooms are a good size, with separate shower and bath, and extremely comfortable beds.
There is a secure underground car park which is worth the 14 Euros overnight charge if you have a car laden with luggage and holiday purchases. It's not the most obvious entrance as you have to follow the one-way system round the retail park to reach the rear of the hotel. However, we parked up in the road alongside the hotel first and the helpful reception staff gave us directions.
Breakfast was a substantial continental buffet which filled us up for the day. It's worth booking via the Novotel website as I worked out the breakfast inclusive rate was better value than room only. Great value for 79 Euros for two.
The local metro station, Ansio, is only a short walk away and it provides fast access into Bilbao city centre to visit the Guggenheim.
Not the sort of place to stay for a holiday, but perfect for an overnight stop when you have a car, or if you are attending an event at the nearby Bilbao Exhibition Centre.

  • Liked — Great location close to the Ferry Port
  • Disliked — The slightly confusing road system around the hotel

Fairly expensive for what you get. 100 euro for a small room.

2 kids under 15 stay free but the rooms only have beds for 3 people so one of our kids had to sleep on the floor. The hotel is dirtier and the rooms are smaller than a typical Novotel. Dirty worn carpets, 7 euro per hour for internet access, 14 euro to park in the underground lot., 14 euro each for breakfast. The pool is unheated and not impressive.

Very poor, slow service at the restaurant. Expect to spend 1 1/2 plus hours to have dinner. It took over 1/2 hour just to place our order. Prices are also pretty high. Poor, rude service seems to be common in this area of Spain particulary if you speak english.

There is lots of good shopping nearby at the huge "Max" mall as well as several large box stores including Ikea. The restaurant at Ikea is very good value if you are on a low budget.

The reception staff was helpful and spoke english.

The hotel is located 8 km outside the center of Bilbao. There is a metro station near by. We took a taxi which costs about 20 Euros to the center. The fair of Bilbau is just oposite the hotel. I would not recomend the hotel for private travellers as it is located in a very ugly industrial zone. For business traveles it might be OK - but the my comments about the service.
We choosed this hotel because its one of the view hotels in B. which accepts dogs. So thats a plus.
What we didn t like was the service. The Internet works only in the 1st and the 2nd floor, so we had to change our room to the 1st floor. When we arrived - at 16:30 - it was impossible to have a little snack like a sandwich. As the hotel is located in an industrial zone we had to stay hungry until the night. The breakfast is not worth the 16 Euros they charge. They also offer a small breakfast at the hotel bar, which isn worth the 7,50 Euros you have to pay.
When we orderd room service they changed plates without asking us because they were out. The Bottle of wine arrived without cooler...... I don t know we were probably unlucky but I would not recomen this hotel.

Great modern, clean hotel located outside of the centre of Bilbao. A few minutes walk to the metro station to take you into the centre of Bilbao. Located on a large modern retail park.

Helpful staff with good local knowledge.

Secure underground parking that is not immediately evident how to access, best to pull up outside and the reception will provide you with a little map (its in the hotel but around the back!).

Great food in the restaurant....

Downpoints: no where else to eat nearby, except in the shopping centre.... Swimming pool is overshadowed by the dual carridgeway.

We're a family of four (two adults, two children) who where driving across France and needed to make a brief overnight stop. We picked the Novotel chain as we'd previous had good experiences of them.

PROS: new, modern, airconditioned. Reception staff were multi-lingual, and were very friendly and efficient. Rooms were brand new, nice new decor, and well laid out - music from the TV piped into the bathroom! Good facilitied for kids (PS2). Breakfast was SUPERB, good quality and offering a wide range of food.

CONS: signposting/directions to the hotel! We were able to see it for ages, but it is built on a new estate, and you have to drive past it on a dual carriageway, going the wrong way and then coming back on yourself to get there! There is NO signposting for it at all! And then... PARKING! There is NO signposted parking for the hotel at all - when we got there, there were at least 20-30 cars parked on the side of the road, and lots of tired angry people walking back down to the hotel asking where to park! In the end we parked by a tower block and walked back to the hotel. It turns out that you have to go back to the dual carriageway, back the way you just went (going the wrong way AWAY from the hotel) until you found a roundabout, and then make two lefts at the next two roundabouts, until you come to an underground car park at the back of the hotel. There is NO signposting for it, and the web site doesn't tell you that. AND - insult to injury - they charge you 12 euros to park! What a rip off!! FInally - the bathrooms. This is a brand new hotel, so we were expecting everything to work. We didn't expect the shower to leak and flood the entire bathroom!

SUMMARY: on the whole, good value for the money (£56), but let down by hideous parking problems, bad signposting, and poor quality finish to the rooms. Still, for that price, can't complain too much.

  • Liked — Great layout of the rooms, all mod cons, great breakfast selection
  • Disliked — Trying to get there, and then finding somewhere to park!
  • Tips/Secrets: — Get a map of the hotel before, plus a map of where the secret hotel car park is!
