“A gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013 via mobile

We had a really excellent meal here. the restaurant is set in pretty grounds a short distance outside the town. We were given a table by the window looking out over the grounds. The owner and waiters were very welcoming and friendly - particularly to the children. The service was attentive without being over formal. The food was really delicious. Very straightforward food but perfectly executed. We particularly enjoyed the magret de canard and the creme brûlée. It was also very good value considering the quality of the food. Great setting, great service, great food, great value. We will definitely be returning.

“La Petite Auberge, Villefranche-du-Perigord”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013

There are many 'petites auberges' in France. This one is delightful, in a leafy setting, just outside the village of Villefranche. Good value for money, especially at lunch-time. Good service.

“Traditional French cuisine, well prepared, with a nod towards modernity in the presentation, and very good value.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

To read some of the reviews, it is hard to believe they are talking about the same restaurant. We went for Sunday lunch on 11th November, and chose the special €30 four-course menu for the town's annual Martinmass all day fair. It was lucky we had booked, because the place was packed, with entirely French people. The initial welcome from the proprietor was a bit abrupt, but after we had been seated, and had shown we could communicate in French, it warmed up considerably. It was a lapse that we weren't offered an apéritif before our food order was taken, resulting in the first course soup arriving before the apéritifs. But the pumpkin soup with croutons was perfectly flavoured. How often do you come across a soup to start a meal in France today? The next course was a choice between a crab soufflé and a slice of foie gras on its toast with an accompanying salad of gésiers confits with apple chutney. The crab soufflé was expertly prepared and full of flavour, and the foie gras attractively presented. For the main course there was a choice of fish or venison - we chose the braised venison which was tender and full of flavour, as were the accompanying gratin savoyarde, and carrot and leek purées. To end with, there was a choice between cheese and a delicious chocolate terrine with crème fraîche and a red-fruit coulis. Overall, the test of savouring every mouthful, and putting off the finishing of each dish was passed with flying colours.
The wine list was not extensive, but offered a good choice of local, Cahors and Bergerac, wines at astonishingly reasonable prices. The service by the proprietor, his wife, and one waitress for the whole restaurant - very typical of 35 hour-week France - was leisurely, but we weren't in a hurry. To sum up, not gastronomy, but an excellent example of good bourgeois French cooking, worthy of a red R, but completely ignored by Michelin, whose coverage of the provinces, far from Paris, is so frequently patchy.

“Lovely setting with excellent menu”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2012

The restaurant is set in some lovely gardens on the outskirts of Villefranche-du-Perigord. The Maitre-d welcomed us on arrival and we had a lovely table on the terrace. The menu was varied and the service was excellent. Above all the standard of food was superb and at a reasonable price. The wine list was also good and catered for all price ranges.

“Pleasant atmosphere and good quality food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2012

Had the house wine (red) which was really good value.Other half had steak, which was a little over done; the French can't believe some Brits like steak 'blue', so they always over cook! Attentive table service.
