“Somme 1916 Museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2012

I have over the years visited many military museums, none of which elicited the evocative reaction this one caused. The steep downward tunnel into the air raid bubker was very a psychological trip in and of itself. And from then on it's a trip into the physical and emotional space of 1916. The artefacts are riviting as are the display vignettes which capture the horror as well as the attempts of the soldiers to create some semblance of normality in the tiny spaces in which they existed. the last 20 yds of the museum is an experiential learning moment, in the dark, encosed confines the simulated bombing above does at that point, feel very frightening. The gift shop is a wonderful space of treasures.
Oh, and when you come out, a moment or two away, is a grand bar, called the Highlander, a warm and friendly welcome awaits you there.

“worth a visit.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2012

If you are looking at the Somme over a couple of days then worth a visit. But the Newfoundland memorial does far more to bring the enormity of it all to your consciousness - this is full of the hardware of war.

“Good intro to the Somme experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2012

Definitely worth a visit at the start of your trip to the area. Gives a good feel for the privations suffered in the trenches.

“Musée Somme 1916”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2012

A fascinating museum set in part of the extensive underground system of tunnels that have existed in Albert as a refuge from invaders since the Middle Ages. The entrance is next to the basilica.

Among the exhibits you can see life-size scenes of sleeping quarters, hospital rooms, military operations rooms and store rooms.
