“Excellent hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2010

Not much in the town. Hotel is well located with good parking & excellent breakfast. There is a nice pub nearly opposite serving a good choice of Belgian beer! The restauraqnt looked nice & was very popular with an outdoor area. There was an excellent Moroccan restaurant nearby( L'Oasis).

4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2010

After a very long car journey we were looking for somewhere for a good nights rest. We were a little concerned about noise as the hotel fronts onto a busy road, however, most rooms are in a modern extension to the rear of the hotel and are very quiet. There is plenty of off-street, secure parking available. We chose a room at 77 euro. It was very clean with a huge bed and very efficient shower. We had a 3 course evening meal for 15.50 euro which was excellent. The self-service breakfast cost 7.90 and was the usual coffee, pastries and cheese and ham but with the addition of cereals and fruit juice.

My wife and I stayed at the Fontarabie in Fontenay le Comte for 3 nights in late August whilst house hunting. To say the town has seen its best is an understatement. The Hotel is situated on the main road, Rue de la Republic. On the raod there are 3 bars/bistros, which even on a warm Saturday night were very quiet. Now we are in our 50's, so certainly we weren't looking for pumping nightlife, but the place has little to offer. We eat in the hotel the first night, which was OK, but went looking for alternatives the next night. After following the signs for Restaurants and Shops we found a number of small eateries, mostly closed, permanently not for the holidays, the ones that were open looked anything but attractive. Finally found a Tunisian Restaurant, The Oasis, which looked very new. Food was excellent and the resaurant got busy. We eat back at the hotel on the third night, after finding only a couple of Oriental Restaurant we gave up looking for anything else. After eating in 4 different Regions of France in 6 days, I have to say French Cuisine isn't what it used to be.
Things to see around the town, not a great deal I'm afraid. Rue de Loges was pretty, but was suffering from the recession, in so many shops were closed.

The capital of the Vendee, La Roche-sur-Yon, is known as the most boring city in France, but after visiting both, La Roche is far nore interseting. We loved The Vendee, but will avoid Fontenay in future

Perfect to enjoy the marais poitevin, the hotel is located in a small town. Hotel staff is really friendly and you should visit the restaurant la glycine, the cook is fantastic and you'll enjoy local products with a modern presentation for a reasonable prices. Get a cup of coffee at the terrasse under the glycine. Rooms are ok and the breakfast is perfect, especially the pastries that you can only found in France...

3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2007

Our room was small, and had a bath. The double glazing was good and we were glad of this because it would have been quite noisy otherwise on a Saturday evening.
The breakfast was reasonable, but we were not very impressed by the food at dinner, when we chose the 26.90euro menu. The 'brochette de St. Jacques' was good but the sea bass was ordinary and the Camembert was old& dry and tasted of ammonia. The Muscadet was acidic.
The service was friendly and helpful throughout.

  • Liked — convenient location for town
  • Disliked — small stuffy room as the air conditioning was not effective
