“Huge hotel due for refurbishing and renovation”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2014

This was once a very grand and luxurious hotel visited by many famous celebrities from around the world. It is now badly in need of refurbishing and renovation. Room is spacious and the gardens and facilities are nice. Hotel staff are courteous and the hotel provides a shuttle service to KLCC and the Mines. The hotel is located next to the Turf Club and is a convenient place to stay if you are going for horse race. Free wifi is provided though it's so troublesome to keep signing in every time you are logging in the service.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2014

We stayed here for 7 nights in early March courtesy of a very cheap deal through our membership of Odyssey. It is certainly a very striking hotel on first impression, built on a grand scale and with horse insignia and emblems just about everywhere you look, including the floors and ceilings! So, if you have a phobia about horses pass on this one!

The entrance lobby and the lower lounge area are pleasant and very ornate; and the Side-walk Cafe is OK, except you feel like you're eating in a corridor! However, once you begin to move towards your room and get to your room the tiredness of the building really begins to show. When we were there the rear of the building was being re-painted and so, a day after we arrived, the pool was closed for health and safety reasons, which was a shame as it was very hot! Moving in and out of an air-conditioned environment as we found our way through

Our room was very large, reasonably well appointed with good facilities, although the décor, bathroom, and carpets needed badly refreshing/renewing. The internet in the room was also very intermittent, which for modern-day travellers is a big NO NO! The bed, for the first time in our travels in SE Asia was comfortable and the room was very well-serviced on a daily basis.

Food in the hotel was fine, although very pricey, as it is classed as a five star hotel, and choice was good. It is such a massive hotel that finding the restaurant on the first morning was something of an experience!

Unlike other commentators, we found the staff incredibly helpful, especially the concierge team and the membership staff, along with the drivers of the shuttle bus. This is a big plus for the hotel as, at regular intervals during the day, a free shuttle service is made available for the Mines City, which is nearby with an excellent mall/cinema, and the Petronas Towers, which is the heart of the city centre and about 20 minutes or so away depending on traffic and time of day . We used it every day, both to and from the hotel, and it was really, really much appreciated!

I rated this hotel Average, although it is really Good. It is however not good enough to be rated Very Good, for the reasons I noted above. For a stay with a difference I would recommend it, but not if you are paying 5 star prices.

Room Tip: I think we were in Room 315, which was a fair walk from the centrally placed lifts!

Our stay was perfectly fine but the hotel is not 5*. On arrival after a long, hot & tiring journey we were looking forward to using the pool - no pool. It was out of commission for the week we were there & have to say did not see anyone working on it. The hotel is "tired" & is in need of refurbishment. Our bedroom which was great in size but needed new carpets & painting. It was shabby. The lobby area is very luxurious & belies the rest of the hotel. They run a shuttle service into Mines Resort City - the minibus was very rickety & not what is expected from a 5* hotel - 1* star only for the bus. However the bus going into KL city centre was much better. We used the Carousel dining room once & the food was average - beers & wines are expensive as they are all over the country. Overall our stay was pleasant enough but we did expect better. If you want to be independent a car is needed. Taxis are reasonably priced. The staff were helpful & delightful.

For most, my dad really appreciate one of ladies at concierge counter that fulfill my dad wish to play golf in malaysia. As we know unable to play 1 person but this girl keep searching the place and finally my dad can play golf. Thank you very much. This hotel maybe unperfect with management but I really salute their manners and how they attend old people.

went there for a business trip earlier this month.
It's a nice building and the rooms are quite comfortable, but the service is definitely not up to standard.
the counter took ages to check in, and we were expected to find our own way to breakfast in the morning. the counter staff never mentioned a single word on where the restaurant is placed, and how we could go there for our breakfast which was included in the stay.
and the location of the hotel is way across the lake from the shopping mall, which is quite far and inconvenient to us. why are there no shuttle bus offered? or it's part of the hotel's service but we just never got told?

Room Tip: i don't know how

This Hotel does not live up to the impressive name. Dissatisfied of services, facilities and food quality started the minute we arrive at the hotel.

Air conditions in the room was giving problems the minute we arrived into room. Bathroom was leaking not enough ammenities given in the bathroom upon checking in. Room reservation was for 2 persons, was given one key card. Upon requesting of additional key card, was informed that a deposit was required for it.

Hotel breakfast spread was not well prepared, some meat items were overcooked and fried noodles was extremely hard like dried hay. Items was not well replenished. The bread toaster was not working well therefore the heat setting was faulty which resulted for majority of the bread being burned.

Needed to hunt down staff to get services in some food outlets, despite being the only guest in the outlet it took the more than 30 minutes to get our food.

Some moulds or grime are found around the hotel exteriors. Some plants are not well kept in the surrounding areas which dead plants lying around. Does not show that much maintenance work are in place.
When tried to make reservations at the Chinese restaurant upon arrival for food in the evening, no priorities or exceptions were given despite being an in-house guest and was informed that 3 day's noticed are required in order to dine there.

Overall, the stay is extremely unpleasant and improvements needs to be made for the room price that they are charging.

We stayed at the Palace of the Golden Horses last week during a three day trip to Kuala Lumpur. It's a bit far from town, but a wonderful place to stay.

We reached early in the morning, after traveling the whole night, and they gave us a room immediately, several hours before their check in time. No, they didn't actually -- rooms were all full, so they gave us a suite! Large living room, large bedroom, 2 bathrooms, 2 LCD TV sets, lots of comfortable seating, desks, and a very comfortable bed. The furniture was all old style and lovely to see and use. So many drawers and shelves everywhere, that we were scared we'd leave something behind when packing. I know a lot of people complain that the hotel is old - personally, I loved the vintage look. The carpet was the only thing that needed changing, I'd say. The wardrobe had an ironing board and iron. Lots of electrical wall sockets, though they're the UK type - three rectangular holes.

The hotel has several restaurants and a full fledged convention center. There's also a mini theater, though we never saw it. The grounds are pretty extensive, and we were not able to see everything this hotel has. There were several lawns, a swimming pool, a spa, and a jetty with a canal leading onto the lake. We took a boat from there to the Mines Wellness Resort, which is a sister concern, and then walked across to the Mines Shopping Center. The boat ride costs RM 8 per person, but you can also get to the shopping center on the hotel's free shuttle van, which runs several times a day. The hotel also provides a free shuttle service to the city, and we used it several times. It was always on time and dependable.

The staff was great - always cheerful and willing to help. The concierge desk, especially, was very informative and efficiently run - they organised the ferry and shuttle services. We had a wonderful time here, and would love to go back!

Room Tip: One of the wings has had its rooms renovated, and they seemed nicer. Ours was in the wing awaiting r...
