“Loved Besse but not Beffroy”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2012

We were delighted with this beautiful, mountain village but very disappointed with the Hostellerie du Beffroy! The rooms were a la 1950's and had seen better days. The welcome was cool to say the least, despite the fact that one of our party was a fluent French speaker, and I had the feeling that the patron and patronne were thoroughly fed up with what they were doing.
We didn't dine there, being put off by the price and near empty dining room but had two excellent dinners in restaurants in the village.
Breakfast was overpriced and disappointing with cold coffee and indifferent pastries.
Never again!! It was an oppressive place and we were jubilant when we escaped after two nights.
Overpriced.

This small hotel is located in the heart of the village of Besse, which is itself a charming mountain resort with a great selection of small restaurants. the building itself is a converted Bellfry and you should be ready for the bells to sound every hour between 07.00 and 23.00, a minute or so after the bells sound in the church opposite. Do not stay here if a few church bells disturb you!
Parking is available in the hotel garage, but even in August i found parking for free on the street outside was never a problem. Elsewhere in the village there is plenty of car parking.
The standard room should come as no surprise to anyone who has stayed in a French 2 star hotel. The bed was on the small side for a double and the mattress had seen better days, but the room was spotlessly keen and decorated in a charming rustic style.
Breakfast at the hotel is continental and perfectably acceptable, but you can get better value at one of the cafes 20 ms walk away.
The hotel restaurant is sublime however. You will not eat a better gourmet meal anywhere, and the attention to detail is worthy of a Michelin star. I would have expected to pay 4 times this price in Paris for equivalent food and with service that would be nowhere near as attentive.

free wifi in communal areas doesnt extend to the bedroom, so be warned.

The husband and wife team who run the hotel bend over backwards to make you feel welcome. I would say that it is the warmest welcome I have ever felt in a French hotel.

I will certainly be coming back.
