“Great stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

We stayed at Gran Claustre for one night and we really enjoyed the place. The hotel is built on a beautifully renovated old building. The common areas are pretty stylish and the standard room we stayed at was very nice. The bathroom was well equipped with whirlpool and all.
Upon check-in we were able to use the spa, which is small but did the job. Breakfast was served in the morning at the Bruixes de Burriac restaurant, offered a wide range of hot and cold dishes, and was very tasty.

The hotel is located in Altafulla, a very charming seaside town about an hour from Barcelona. Many Spaniards vacation here in August. I have stayed in the Gran Claustre four times, most recently in August of 2012.

The hotel is, without a doubt, the best in Altafulla and the surrounding area. Staff is friendly, very helpful and most speak good English. The rooms are each unique, and the beds are very comfortable. Both sides of the hotel (original and new) offer interesting architectural features complimented by the proximity of a 10th century castle and a church with charming bells. The hotel restaurant is a sophisticated venue for late dinner and is best enjoyed by those with an appreciation for Catalan and Spanish food. The wine selection is limited in scope but above average in quality.

However, the hotel is not without room for improvement. The room photos on the hotel's website overstate the dimensions of the rooms, and although the rooms are charming, they are in need of refurbishing. Many walls are empty and would benefit from some simple decoration to provide a less austere feeling. The bathroom in the last room I stayed in did not even have a toilet paper holder, just a plain roll sitting on a ledge behind the toilet. Most people expect more than that for a hotel that aspires to be exceptional. And don't plan to have wifi in any of the rooms despite assurances to contrary, it's only workable in the public areas.

In summary, a good place to stay with much to like in the hotel itself and the town, but go with reasonable expectations.

My husband and I have stayed at this charming hotel several times, both before and after their new addition. The older side of the hotel is unique in that the rooms are each different and have a old world style to them. The new addition is across the street and the rooms are modern but similar to one another, much like you find in a standard hotel. The hotel has opened a larger restaurant which was a needed addition but I distinctly remember a charming dinner next to the pool, prior to the new restaurant. It was a night to remember with the wall of the town's castle looming before us. The hotel is located in the center of old town Altafulla and you can't beat this location, it is wonderful. The ancient church, a few yards away, holds regular outdoor concerts throughout the summer. The hotel staff is very helpful the the services, spa and restaurant are good, not great, but definitely a cut above the other hotels in this wonderful area.

My husband and I stayed here for three nights in July 2012 using a KGB voucher - £120 for bed, breakfast for two with a lovely bottle of wine thrown in too. Given the Parador quality of this lovely hotel, this was stunning value. We stayed at the Vic Parador earlier in our trip and happily paid the same rate for one night.

The hotel's location at the summit of the old town, of Altafulla next to the castle and church is breathtaking with pretty old streets all around you for delightful evening walks. We had not expected to be given much of a room for the price we paid but in fact (especially given some of the comments below) we found our room very charming indeed. It was in the older more historic part of the hotel and was spacious with good quality furnishing and fittings. As others have commented, the pool is rather small but is so pretty as it seems to have been constructed in a previously ruined part of the building. There are moorish columns and the pool is open to the sky but protected from the hot sun by awnings that are pulled back most of the time. The pool area is so quiet in the evening and we took our drinks there and felt like millionaires in a private enclave of our own.

The breakfasts are very good indeed and we found all the staff helpful and friendly. We were certainly not made to feel second class guests even though we had paid so little for this charming stay. A highlight of the trip was a day visit to Tarragona. We would recommend doing this by train - less than 10 minutes, no parking problems and you are right there near the Roman arena with a short walk, albeit uphill, to the other sites.

I have been visiting Altafulla for over 30 years and always stay with friends, however this year my Mother came too and we booked into this hotel for 10 nights. A very modern hotel built into an old convent. Too modern for my liking really. The first room Mum was offered had steep staircase and no hand rail but they moved her to a suite overlooking the old square and castle which was delightful. The rooms were clean and the staff efficient though too busy to welcome people as they came and went, a touch my mother would have appreciated. We didn't try the spa even though we got a free session. 80 year old mothers and slippy floors do not mix well. We did use the pool which was small but secluded. The location in the heart of the old village was fabulous, though a car is needed to get down to the beach every day as it is a long steep walk down and up again. We tried the hotel restaurant on the first night, expensive, pretentious, badly lit, and did not cater to vegetarians, of which we had two in our party. Was not impressed.

stayed here on a 2 day business trip, nice clean friendly hotel with good sized rooms. service was friendly and breakfast was good with a decent selection of intenational and local food. the only small complaint i have is that there is only wifi in the lobby and not in the rooms. there are several good restaurants near by (walking distance) to the hotel, quality food a good price.

Room Tip: i stayed in room 11 which was a nice room.

We only stayed 1 night but it was one of the best nights of our tour of the Spanish coast. Spotless, old & new combined to good effect. The staff were very professional and friendly. Stunning rooms in a really auld setting. Coming from Ireland I have to say there is one downside,,,, no bar,, even worse we stayed on a Sunday night, no craic to be found either,,,,but I managed to find a fantastic restaurant down the steps at the rear of the hotel. We had a beautiful meal (€50.00 including wine) and the owner locked us in and treated us to a number of tunes on the Spanish harp, just the two of us, very special. Just go and have a look!!!

Room Tip: Bring your own wine!!!
