“Atrocious Food - DON'T Eat Here - and Vegetarians might Starve!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2011

Like some previous reviewers we were here for 2 nights on a VJV tour. Our room was on the ground floor and very spacious and clean. I can't really fault the room, although some travelling companions reported much smaller rooms so I think we were lucky. The A/C worked which on this trip was a major breakthrough! The hotel is not in a prime location and so there are few facilities around. The views from some rooms are excellent and the top-floor restaurant is even better. Our view was actually of the car park road up the side of the hotel so this rather balanced the spacious room but it was a fair trade-off! I have no complaints about the accommodation to which I would give 4/5 but...

The food was absolutely atrocious and unacceptable. There were only about half a dozen people there besides 18 from VJV yet the evening meals varied from lukewarm to cold. It was totally unimaginative, meat and veg or fish and veg. The vegetables were boiled to oblivion. The approach to vegetarian food (I am not one myself) was like something from Monty Python. The substitute for meat was a plate of cheese. The substitute for fish was - without exaggeration - a plate of broccoli and carrots! We were taking photographs for posterity! It didn't matter as the non-veggies left most of theirs anyway. I echo previous comments about the paucity of fruit, artificial fruit juice, and the indescribable "fried" eggs. So, be warned. Don't even think of eating here unless you have to. If you are a veggie take plenty of snacks!

The staff seemed to have been specially recruited for their dumb charmlessness. They must have scoured Sicily to find them. This hotel does Sicily no favours.

Nice enough hotel though not memorable. Reception girl seemed more interested in her personal cell phone conversation than waiting on us. Breakfast was non-descript. A/C did not work.

Visited this hotel for two nights as part of a VJV tour around Sicily (ie. not chosen by me)
Arrived on a Thursday afternoon; check in was ok; hotel appears to be operated by the same 3 or 4 people (restaurant & desk etc)
Rooms ok - clean enough; no baths though - all showers (at least on our tour)
Road outside surprisingly busy - some noise at night. Nicely situated for Monreale town up the hill though - certainly walkable (apart from the Cathedral there is not much else there so be warned)
Food I'm afraid not great; indifferent quality. Our tour was half-board so may not be an ideal comparison though. Breakfast was so-so, very runny scrambled eggs & odd fried eggs the only hot choice. Lots of cakes (why...??) though actually one or two were very nice - I guess not cooked on the premises.
Evening meals not great - we had a swordfish steak one night - so overdone only the middle square inch was edible. The fruit juice at breakfast was obviously packet - tasted foul (avoid at all costs). Only good thing was that seconds were offered of the prima pasta first course - which was probably the best bit of the meal. Desserts were very sweet & indeterminate as to origin - just very sweet..
This hotel boast a revolving restaurant on the top floor - obviously cashing in on its elevated location inland from Palermo. The views are quite good on a clear day, however the floor squeaks alot as it revolves and the nice view is only in a 90 degree arc.
Only our tour (19 people) & two Italian couples were resident. There is a small pool outside and some sun loungers buts its still near the road.
I would say its too far from Palermo for an easy commute in & out; get a nicer hotel farther in if its Palermo you are visiting.
So-so for tours - wouldn't stay if travelling independently. There must be nicer hotels in the area - surely.......!

Hotel Guglielmo II is situated partway up the hill toward Monreale, with a beautiful view of Palermo. We stayed here for two nights- the room was very comfortable. Very helpful staff. Free WIFI available in the room. Beds were nice; bathroom good-sized. Very little road noise even though the hotel is on a main road. Breakfast was far better than most in Italy. Parking available at the hotel and across the street. Restaurant next door. On AST bus line.Strenuous hike up the hill to Monreale city center and cathedral and many ohter restaurants. Our Garmin had the location off by 2.2 km.

The outside sitting area is pleasant and there is adequate car parking. The meal in the hotel was good, on the occasion the restaurant was open.

The hotel restaurant is only open one night a week, and it is a very strenuous long walk uphill to Monreale where alternative eating and leisure areas are available. Breakfast selection is poor, food items were not restocked. I had to ask for cutlery and food items on a number of occasions. Most staff were not welcoming and seemed to find it a chore when asked. There is a real shortcoming in the service provided. No information provided in the room or instructions for phone or other hotel services. Air conditioning is inadequate.

It feels very much like a hotel for travelling businessmen who can easily afford taxis. Everything inside the hotel is super neat, golden-plated and quality, with swimming pool and utterly quality restaurant at the top. Buffet breakfast - mmm. There is one nice restaurant round the corner too which is not too expensive.

Location is weird. It's not really in Monreale - it was quite hard to just walk there downhill from top of historic Monreale through dangerous pedestrian-less streets - that or overpriced 10 Euro taxi from Monreale cathedral.

But there is a direct hourly bus from the hotel to Palermo directly, even to Palermo Central train station which was a bliss for us. But we were told by receptionist that it runs in morning/afternoon...

At 125 Euro per night for double it's quality and pleasant to stay for businessmen, but very much nconvenience for travellers location-wise.

Another minus is Internet or lack thereof. At first we were told that Internet is available for free in room if you have laptop with you. When I tried my laptop it did not work and then they changed story saying that only 'some rooms' have Internet plugin.

  • Liked — shiny quality, neatness, breakfast
  • Disliked — just location
