“Best Mosaics”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2013

We thought Ravenna was great with the Byzantine mosaics, but they pale in comparison to Monreale and Palermo. The Duomo is free and you can take photos (don't be the tourist who uses flash for a photo of mosaics 100 feet away). Relax and enjoy the environment. We were fortunate in that a wedding was also held at the same time and it was enjoyable to hear the organ music. Go late in the day to avoid the tour buses.

“Amazing mosaics”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2013 via mobile

Easy to find, set in a very picturesque town. Amazing mosaics. Have a cafe in the lovely square. Parking is just below the Duomo and is just 1e per hour.

“Fascinating building”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

Fascinating building with wonderful murals of the Ark and its animals not to mention a rather gloomy looking Eve watching Adam. Either visit early in the day before bus loads of tourist arrive or wait until later when they have departed.

“Awesome!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2013

This Duomo is stunning with its interior completely done in gold mosaics. There are depictions of Christ Pantocrator, many of saints, the apostles, and stories from both the Old and New Testaments. There is a small admission fee for entry into the north transept area, I am not entirely sure why - it is worth the 2 or so euros, however, to see additional art work and an amazing crucifix. Be sure to see the cloisters attached to the Duomo (separate entrance and admission) - they are beautiful and peaceful. I spent several hours wandering both the Duomo and the cloisters and could probably have stayed longer had they not closed up for lunch.

“EVERYTHING'S ALREADY BEEN SAID!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2013

Guide books describe the mosaics of this lovely monastery as the best in the world and I believe they are right. As I went with my mom in a wheelchair and with some friends we met on the ship, I couldn't do a lot of exploring of Monreale town, but the duomo is absolutely amazing. The mosaics tell stories from the bible and cover the walls and ceilings. Entrance is free and it was a pity that more visitors did not make donations to the upkeep of the building (there was a man by the door with a large platter requesting donations). It is wheelchair friendly. The view over Palermo just down the road is wonderful. We took a taxi (4 of us) from the port, it was about 30 euros total. We had planned on getting a bus back to Palermo but that proved complicated. The buses ran about every hour and it turned out we had to change buses to get to Palermo, so we got another taxi - this time 25 euros to Plaza Reale (or Independenzia). Anyone who has an opportunity to visit Monreale should jump at the chance.
