“The Most Precious of Churches”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2013

I've seen a lot of churches in Italy, France, Spain and Portugal -- and there's a certain sameness to most of them. Of all the churches I've visited, however, I would say that the Monreale Duomo is the most memorable. The walls are covered with exquisite mosaics that are truly awe-inspiring. Monreale is less than 10 miles from Palermo and easily reached by bus -- so make time for an eye-popping visit

“How to get”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 9, 2013 via mobile

The cheapest way to get from Palermo: find a stop on Emanuelle corso near palazzo Reale and piazza independence , there you can wait a public bus which goes both ways , but be sure it doesn't go very often. Trip takes about 20 minutes and of course depends on traffic jams.

“nice cathedral”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

free entry, Very nice Cathedral, but the gardens were a bit neglected and overpriced. The serenity of the place was slightly compromised by the noise of power tools used for restoration (as usual).

“A Gem of Monreale”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2013

Built of golden Sicilian stone by King William II on a mountaintop overlooking Palermo, the Duomo combines Moorish and Norman styles and is famed for the matchless multicolored mosaics that glorify every centimeter of wall space. Most of the Old and the New Testament stories you're likely to have heard are depicted here, dramatically visualized with a host of human and animal figures. A huge, majestic Christ the Pantocrator broods over it all in the central apse. From the incense-filled interior and its 6,000 square yards of dazzling mosaics, step into the blinding sunshine of equally famous cloisters of the adjacent Benedectine abbey.

“Absolutely worth the trip.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2013

I had a personal guided tour of Monreale from friends who live close by. Breathtaking view of Palermo, stunning cathedral and all the mosaics on the floors. Even had the privy of being escorted all the way tot he top tower by one of the security guards. Only disappointed because the courtyard was closed, so I only saw it from above.
Entering the church is free, but there are paid access to other sections of the church, so be prepared with your cash.
