“A truly wonderful chateau hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2011

We stopped at the Hotel Clery on our way home from visiting SW France & the Loire.

This lovely chateau hotel is situated approximately 15 minutes from the autoroute - it is fairly well signposted although we stumbled into the entrance gates almost by accident. What a picture this chateau is when you drive through those gates! Parking is situated to the side of the chateau in a small wooded area.

On walking through the hotel's entrance door, we were met by a delightful receptionist, who personally showed us to our room on the first floor - a large impressive room with 3 bay windows, a hallway & a bathroom that looked like it had been recently upgraded or refurbished. It was extremely impressive and immaculately clean. There were his/ hers bathrobes and many towels for our overnight stay.

The bed was the most comfortable bed we have slept in for a long time and provided us with our best night's sleep of the holiday.

We decided to have a drink in the salon/ lounge bar in the afternoon. I do not know the lovely lady's name that served us, but she was so happy & pleasant whilst carrying out her duties that she made everyone around her smile & feel happy - it really was so nice to see this. She was also very attentive with her service. The bar drinks menu has plenty of choice and the prices seem to be in keeping with hotels of this standard.

The hotel seems a popular place for golfers as there was a large group of English golfers in the adjacent lounge area obviously discussing their next day's golf tactics. I believe that there are a number of golf clubs within a few miles of the hotel, so this may be an ideal place to stay if you wish to play golf.

We had reserved our table in the restaurant for the evening. There are 2 parts to the restaurant: one part within the chateau or the conservatory adjacent to the main restaurant.

The restaurant manager was attentive to all of his guests. The set menu or a la carte provided a wide & plentiful selection to suit all taste buds. The set menu seemed the best value for money which included 3 or 4 courses depending on what we desired. Upon the manager's recommendation we opted for carre d'agneau - lamb cutlets for our main course, which was an excellent choice. Presentation was exquisite, I almost wanted to take a photograph of my starter and main course rather than eat it.

The wine recommedations made by the restaurant manager did not disappoint either and complemented the meal superbly.

The beauty of this hotel is that it is only 25 minutes from the Eurotunnel, which makes it very accessible for returning to, or even a weekend away from, the UK. I believe that you do get what you pay for. This is not the cheapest hotel you will find in this region, but for a lovely short break or even for an overnight stay at the end of a tour of France, consider staying here. I do not think you will be disappointed. Such a friendly atmosphere within a beautiful chateau hotel definitely deserves another visit.

Room Tip: Pay extra & upgrade your room - larger rooms, beautiful views of the gardens and they have a bra...

Stayed at the Clery for one night on the 10/9/11. We were trying to find a bed in Boulogne but it was full so the Clery was recommended by a hotel in town.
We were charged 159 euros for a room in the separate side block, this was a very clean and comfortable room (39) the only thing i would like to see changed is the shower which you had to hold and the lack of a shower shield / curtain meant that you stepped out of the bath tub into a pool of water...
The restaurant was top notch for food but the service was very slow even by French standards. (we were squeezed in with little notice though..).
Service in general though was top notch.
We didnt have time for breakfast or to walk in the grounds.
Would we return ? Yes but with a little more time.........

When I saw a deal on travelzoo - could not resist.. how better to finish our hols in france than in a chateau! Confirmed by email we were to be in the chateau. Upon arrival we were about to be allocated a room in the outbuildings... we teachers know how to deal with situations! Having politely explained that a chateau is a chateau.. no further prblems ensued. I assume we were upgraded double!

We did investigate the restaurant & we had spent up during the holiday - so we ended up eating in the next village - where the meal plus wine came to the same price of a bottle of red in the chateau.

Yes as noted.. I would not have liked to have paid 16E for b'fast.. but then again - I don't know what more they could have offered us in france - where it would be deemed good. Just expensive?

Well we had a lovely experience.. hope to repeat it. I would also like to add - it is one of the cleanest hotels we have ever stayed in, with a great eye to detail.

We were at the Clergy for a 1 night stopover, and on arrival it would be hard not to be impressed by the distinguished main house nestling in the trees.
Our grouphad rooms in a tastefully decorated out building and both overlooked the large rear garden. So far, so good!
It was the little things that let us down: neither room had a shower you could stand up in, despite having large modern bathrooms, it was handheld showerhead only with no screen or curtain.
Breakfast was the other gripe, €16 for a basic continental breakfast felt like a room supplement, so we opted out and drove to a cafe.

Final tip: taxis are rare and the nearest seems to com from Boulogne, so you will find around €20 on the meter when they arrive, so plan to have a designated driver if going out to dinner

Loved the hotel, food and rooms. Staff friendly and patient as one of our party has walking difficulty. The previous reviewer made a good point about access though.
We booked ground level rooms (through VFB) but didn't realise that the bar, restaurant and toilets all had stairs to negotiate. Ramps could be added but not easily. So beware if you are not fully mobile.
Hotel has small gym which was OK but poor instructions.
Hotel allows dogs. Only family taking dog to restaurant was British. Yuk

Room Tip: Les Cottages lovely rooms and worth paying extra for if you are staying more than overnight.

We stayed overnight at the Hotel Clery on our way back to Geneva from Calais. As I am in a wheelchair I especially asked re: handicap access. I was twice assured by Reception that that would not be a problem. Our cottage room, as I subsequently wrote, was 1st class & for a handicap person couldn't be bettered. Only one BIG PROBLEM. There was no convenient access to the acclaimed, albeit expensive, restaurant! Finally, my wife had to get the Head Waiter & an assistant to manhandle me up the steps. which is why we ducked breakfast next morning.
I pointed out that, at the very least, a top class hotel that advertises it can cater for handicapped guests, could make a simple ramp for those with walking difficulties. Sometime later, I received a "than you" saying how much the Hotel appreciated receiving comments as it helped them to improve their service.

I replied asking what had been done about my "ramp" suggestion & that if nothing was done I would not be able to make a return visit! Not unexpectedly, I never received an acknowledgement.

A superbly-run smaller chateau. 1st class service and top-notch food in the evenings(although breakfast could be improved upon). Rooms vary from excellent (in the newer blocks) to very dated (e.g. room 30) so worth establishing where you are staying when booking. Little to do in the immediate area.
