Me and my Partner stayed here over christmas and new year,Where do i start ?
Rooms basic no drink making facilities ,you have to walk all the way to the bar for a coffee in the morning, Disappointing Christmas meal (no potatoes, veg or gravy )or am i asking to much ?,Was not impressed with the food overall, meat under cooked, lived on toast and marmalade for breakfast ,bar running out of popular drinks ,even COKE ?
SAND-FLIES ! What a nightmare,my partner suffered for 2 weeks and the resort looked like it had an outbreak of chicken pocks with so many people scratching and suffering from bites,
This may be due to the fact you are surrounded by swamps !
There is no point hiring a car or bike because there is nowhere near to go and see,
Went on the Cuba now excursion which was really good apart from restaurant we was taken to for lunch ,it was full of flies and they where all over the food ,hence we did not eat.
Speed boat trip was good value too,
ENTERTAINMENT ? Whilst we where there they had a dance group in residents ,Thou they where good ,it got a bit boring seeing them every night for 2 weeks constant ,even Christmas eve night felt like it was there own party.
New Years Eve was a party for the staff, management and there families not for the holiday makers, even to the point of playing there national anthem at the stroke of midnight when we where all Brits and Canadians ?

On the Plus Side - the beach is to die for,,,,
The bar, restaurant cleaning and garden staff are excellent and friendly as where all cuban people we met ,special thanks to NO MORE !!!!! Yaniel from sinureta Vicky ,and the Thomas Cook Rep ,Both top blokes,,,,

Have been told not to be put off Cuba from this experience and to go to the other side of the island by Havana .

So in short go here if you only just want to lie in the sun all day and nothing else but get bit alive ,but there are better hotels near by,if you have kids they will get bored like we did and will leave hungry .

Room Tip: Go Up the Beach to a better hotel

Sol Cayo G,

As usually I like to get to the point. I will give a 5 star rating for a few catagories and a short summary.

Hotel: 3.5
Rooms: 3 - There is no bath tub. Made it a bit difficult with my 2 year old, but we made it work.
Beach: 5
Pools: 4 - no swim up bars. Would have preferred but we still enjoyed.
Food: 4 I can actually say that Cuban food is starting to compare to North American. I spoke to many ppl on the flight home from other resorts as well and we were all impressed.
Wedding: 4.5 - Language barrier made it a bit more effort, but overall great1
Staff: 5

Here's the deal about this resort. It's a 3 star at most. But because of the staff, beach, food, etc you can live with the fact it needs a bit of upgrades/reno's.

We loved it; a total of 15 people. If I can compare with Blau Colonial in Cayo Coco. I would say there hotels and buildings were a bit more up to date, but I liked Sol Cayo G better.

If you can book this for under $900 canadian and don't need 5 star up to date rooms and a few others then book it. You won't regret.

Ps. I was sober the entire week. We had a great time!

We ( myself, wife and 13 year old ) stayed at this hotel for one week- from Dec. 29-Jan. 6 2013. First I'd like to say thanks to Louis the manager, who was very accommodating.

We have been to Cuba many times but never in Cayo Guillermo. We liked the fact that it was overall quieter than Varadero, even though the hotel itself was packed to capacity.

I'll keep my review to the point:

Beach: wonderful, maybe the nicest we've seen in Cuba. Crystal clear turquoise waters, shallow waters, white sand. The beach was a little narrower than what I personally prefer, but beautiful just the same. Beware of sand fleas-my wife got an allergic reaction to the bites.

Room: nice overall, somewhat updated, good size, high ceiling, with balcony. We stayed on the upper level facing the ocean.

Service: nice staff, quick check in/out, never any long waits at the reception desk. Maid service was good. Some minor issues were occasional lack of beach towels, you have to buy a calling card to make long distance calls from a phone at reception-you cannot call out through your room phone. There is a medical doctor on site, but just be aware that it is $25 for a consultation.

Food: somewhat above average compared to my other experiences in Cuba, with decent variety. The afternoon beach grill was great.Line ups can cause delays at the most popular kitchen bars at the buffet (pasta, fish, grilled meats).

Pool: OK, but we didn't spend much time there. A little too crowded, and it appeared that it was difficult to get a pool chair unless you get up real early.

Grounds: relatively well kept, but we noticed some items (debris) seemed to be at the same spot for a few days before they were finally removed. This is a medium size hotel so you don't have to walk miles to get to places-nice.

Entertainment: average, but no beach harassment to get involved with games which was welcomed for us as we wanted some peace and quiet while at the beach. There were however organized games on other parts of the hotel for anyone looking for that.

I would go back as it was good value for what we paid (just under $1000CDN per person) and Louis and his staff were very accommodating.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2013 via mobile

I travelled with my partner at the beginning of December 2012. Unfortunately for us our plane was delayed by 5 hours. Nevertheless on our arrival the team at the hotel went out of their way to ensure we were checked in and fed.

Arriving late also meant we arrived when it was dark and as such we had to wait to the next day to really see the resort. This was actually quite a blessing in disguise as jet lag meant that we were up before sunrise, and with the sun slowly rising over the resort suddenly the magic of the resort and this destination were unveiled to us.

As you hear with many of these reviews: 'This is Cuba' so don't expect Maldives-esque luxury (then again you are hardly paying the price for that!). The resort is very clean and tidy with beach hut accommodation which is comfortable and the majority of which come with a sea view.

There are a lot of things to see and do around the resort, the pool is clean and has plenty of sun loungers to relax. The real gem of the hotel is the beach. This is beautiful and I would strongly recommend a walk along it at sunrise. A short 5 minute bus ride north takes you to Pilar Beach which you must do. The beach is away from all of the hotels on the island and contains a small beach hut, so you get a good feel of a sat away beach. The water is as clear as crystal and as the tide goes out it leaves pools of water around the sandbanks which are warmed by the heat of the sun. You will also find a wealth of wildlife especially if you bring a snorkel.

Back to the resort, I would enforce all comments made on this forum that the real value offered by the resort is the hospitality provided by the workers of the hotel. In my experience they work extremely hard at ensuring guests are happy and have a great personal experience. This may be at the cost of not being served immediately at the bar but once you get over that and realise this is Caribbean life you can really appreciate the service.

Away from the resort I would strongly recommend a few trips to the mainland to gauge a feel and understanding of the real Cuba. In particular I would recommend the trip to Havanna. This includes a tour of the Che memorial in Santa Clara, tours around Havanna and is capped with a trip to Club Tropicanna which is very enjoyable. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and encourages all types of questions. This helps you gain a good understanding of Cuban life for Cubans. I would also recommend picking up a couple of books from the local markets (sometimes heavily influenced by propaganda, but it is quite easy to read between the lines).

All in all, not many negatives to report. Sand flies were an issue towards the end of the holiday. The staff spray the resort in the morning and early evening, which manges the flies around the resort to a degree. I would however strongly recommend investing in decent bug repellant to be applied when going to the beach or moving out of the resort.

Thank you SCG staff for a great stay!

We travelled as a family of 6 (all adults). What a beautiful place to welcome in the new year! The beach was amazing and we spent almost all day every day swimming, body-surfing, snorkelling, relaxing and exploring the coastline. The hotel was comfortable and clean, the resort grounds were well kept and all of the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. Buffet "fresh cooked" stations made excellent food, and the beach restaurant was great for lunch in the fresh air. Loved the Mojitos from the Cuban bar on the beach. Took a trip into the mangroves for snorkelling - the channel portion (where you pull yourself forward against the current with a rope) was unbelievable for the number and variety of tropical fish you could see up close. Also got a Hobie Cat trip from the resort beach out to the reef where snorkelling was quite good. Easy trip down to Pillar beach on the bus, and that was good exploring and snorkelling as well.

You would have to work at having a bad time in such a beautiful natural paradise.

I travelled with a group of 26 for a wedding! But I'll start with the hotel itself. Nothing wrong with the hotel, apart from being very big. We were all separated as couples/families so when you needed to go to someone's room you might have to travel a long way and if you're by the pool,it could take you a while to get back to your room. And also,as You do find in some hotels, the walls are quite thin. We travelled with our 20month old baby and for 2 nights we had our next door neighbours banging on our wall because he was crying and we could hear there telly too. Can get annoying. But rooms very clean, cleaners in every day. Staff in all were very friendly, helpful. The gardeners would always make the kids amazing gifts out of coconuts and leaves!
The pool is an excellent size and there was always plenty of loungers. No need to get up early and leave towels. We sometimes were the only people at the pool. Very quiet! But too quiet for the kids. There is literally nothing for kids to do! There is a kids pool, but its literally just a smaller and shallow version of the big one. No slides, nothing. No kiddie entertainment either, especially at night, so we found ourselves going back to the room pretty early as trying to entertain a 20month old can get pretty tiring when there's nothing to do.
Food and restaurants I can't fault. So much choice. In the day, in between the main restaurant opening for buffet, you would have a doughnut stand and a burger/hotdog stand for snacks.
The beach was paradise, sea as warm as a bath and clear and the fish are not shy, they would just swim all round you. Fishing is great there, but the walk to the pier is very long! Very long!! And you would have to take your own fishing rods! If you catch anything, the hotel will cook it for you for dinner.
You can also eat at the hotel next door for abit of a change, (which actually was better!)
In all a great holiday, it was paradise but just not for families. If I went just me and my partner we would have had a much better time! But I would recommend.
Weather was also fantastic,we went in September and experienced 2 afternoons and 1 night of heavy rain in 2 weeks.
