Ignore the bad reviews on this hotel, Me and my husband stayed here 10th-20th October 2012 and our stay could not have been better.
The rooms are absolutely gorgeous, the linen and towels changed every day and the staff did an excellent job of cleaning the room. The property is exquisite and could not have been more picturesque!!
When we arrived we were given lovely cold face clothes and an ice cold cocktail to drink- much appreciated in the heat!! We were greated by a lovely lady called Tia who informed us of everything we needed to know and gave us our room key. We were helped up to our room by a friendly Bajan gentleman, who also told us quite a bit about the hotel and restaurants and the grounds.
The food here is AMAZING- second to none. We have been a few places abroad inclusive of Greece, Spain and Turkey and have never experianced such lovely food!!- The hotel has 3 main restaurants, ENID's, Dover Grill (bookings only) and Waves (also bookings only).
All the restaurants serve amazing food, but I think maybe our favourite meals were at Enid's and The Dover Grill. The fish dishes are always caught locally and are beautifully flavoured. Chicken is also amazing here- the Bajan's favour chicken and fresh fish and you will totally find out why- their way of cooking these dishes is second to none and there is endless choices to make at the hotel, there are dishes with/without sauce, battered fish & chicken. Fresh with beautifully cooked Al Dente vegetables, potato, local dishes such as sweet potato, yam and plantain, rices, pasta's, different types of all!!
The hotel also has certain 'speciality' nights- the beach BBQ night and the managers cocktail party and buffet were particularly lovely! - a beautiful array of local arts & crafts to boot!
The staff are amazing here and can't do enough for you- there is never a shortage of cocktails to try and the tables are always kept clean and tidy with staff regularly clearing them. The staff are only to keen to talk to you about local treasures and the island itself. You really can get to know the staff quite well and we were quite sad to leave them behind!!
We thought at first that the staff's politeness was purely because of the fact we were guests- but we travelled into Bridgetown and happily discovered that infact, this was just the Bajan way and everyone we met were lovely! It is true that the locals love to try and sell you various things- especially on the beach, as it is law in Barbados that no one is allowed to 'buy' the beaches and these remain public property, i.e. free for anyone to roam on. Having said that however, as you find in alot of other countries that the sellers can be extremely 'pushy' and almost frightening. This is NOT the case in Barbados, the locals can be persuasive, but in general if told no a couple of times, will leave you alone to enjoy the sun!
The Bajan's in general are very, very laid back and everything here is done in your own time, there is no rushing anywhere!- I have to say, this does take a little getting used to if you are from the more 'western' countries. However, once you get used to it, this adds to the attraction and is a lovely way to relax!
Don't be afraid to try the 'local' rasta buses, they are the same price as the local council buses ($3 Bajan each-around 90p) and you should not be scared of trying them- we used them 4 times and the people that run them are in general very friendly people and will always help you out if you need any info of where to catch them or where abouts you need to get off. And using them is certainly an experiance to be had! in general, thier horns are hilarious- each van seems to have a different one! & they peep all the time- mainly to get passangers to ride (as this is obviously their business also) They also always have some local radio station playing and are not afraid to show you thier singing talent!
But if you prefer, you are free to use the local authority-run buses; you can say no and they will happily leave you alone.
Bridgetown is well worth a visit, although there is a vast difference between the rich/poor areas of this city. It is not very picturesque it has to be said, but there are loads of bargains to be had and lots and lots to look at!- Some of the major department stores will also deliver your locally bought duty-free alcohol to the airport for you and it is VERY easy to collect this!- However, if you want to buy duty-free you will need to show them your passport at the check-out, so don't forget to take it with you. They will also obviously need a few days to transport it- so you'll need to leave 3-4 days before the end of your stay to buy duty-free alcohol. Some other souvenier items are also available duty-free and you can take these away with you when you have purchased. (We bought T-Shirts, magnets, general souveniers!)
There is loads of stuff to do here and alot of it free to patrons of the hotel- there is a catamoran, body boards and the beach towels are free of charge to use and you can swap for freshly laundered every day if you wish. There is also a beach BBQ everyday if you don't want to leave the sunshine- everyday there are different dishes- as well as endless supply of yummy burgers and hot dogs! Try the salads and coleslaws/salsa, as these are beautiful!
The pizza/chicken, chips salad etc in the italian style buffet restaurant (located near to Enid's) is also open from 12noon to 5pm- and the food available here is also delicious! There is also an ice-cream machine, which the children loved!!
We tried every single cocktail on the menu- every one was lovely! and all the bars were open (inclusive of the swim-up bar). The entertainment was fantastic- although could be a bit repetative.
We also went to the 'Harbour Lights' showbar. WHAT A WONDERFUL EXPERIANCE!!!
This night could not have been any better- from the moment we got onto the coach there to the moment we got off the coach on the journey back- the whole night was excellent. It is hosted by locals and included a fantastic show of fire-eaters, stilt walkers and limbo dancer- all accompanied by an absoluteley excellent local band. Some excellent photo oppertunities. The staff here were absoluteley lovely too!- A word of warning though, only certain local drinks are included in the price- so be careful when you order. We were drinking the local white rum and coke and incurred no charges at all- but some of the other patrons told us they had been charged for different (imported) drinks.
Barbados itself is stunning and once you go, you will not want to leave!! The sand is indeed pure-white and the sea pure turqouise!! The sun rises/sets are stunning and well worth experiancing! - You will take loads and loads of photo's here!! There are NO poisonous spiders or snakes on the island and there has never been any record of any shark attacks on the island!!- There is however, very strong currants at time in the ocean and you should take particular attention to the beach flags provided by the local lifeguard, however surene the water looks!!
You CAN drink the water in Barbados- we didn't believe this at first, but it is indeed drinkable and not only that, but absolutley refreshing also!!
What else can we say, other than that you have to visit here to truley feel the benefits of both Barbados and the resort. Yes, the other two have been sold, but trust me, that is of absoluteley NO detriment to this hotel- SUPERB!!
