“Run down Caribbean hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2014 via mobile

I'm amazed this hotel has largely very good ratings. For me it is a typically run down Caribbean hotel benefiting from being in a great location with good staff. We booked for one night only to pick up a cruise the following day, we immediately noticed that everything about the hotel screams poor maintenance,, from very dirty paintwork to broken tiles everywhere you look. It's the same in the guest rooms to the public areas, it seems that they just can't be bothered. I expected our final hotel to be the same, but it couldn't be more different. My advice is do t bother with this hotel, there must be numerous hotels at the same cost that actually care about the quality of their product. This one clearly doesn't. On the positive side, the beach is great and the breakfast good. There are also nice bars in easy walking distance. Personally though, I wouldn't go there again

My first impressions was that the hotel was a little dated and needed an update.
But, the staff were very friendly.
Rooms always clean.
Great location on beach.
Great entertainment.
Good service.
It was a very special birthday for me, so much appreciated.
Food was good.

Probably one of the best positioned hotels in Barbados, situated towards the middle of St Lawrence gap but far enough away to avoid the hustle and bustle. Huge beach where turtles can usually be spotted coming up to breathe.
Try the Bajan fishcakes with rum punch, at happy hour which is 6-7 every night except Monday and watch the sun set. Fabulous.
The bar meals are excellent and live music is on at least 2 nights a week. Staff are very friendly. Rooms are clean and comfortable with aircon. We have been visiting for over 10 years and love the place.

Room Tip: Try and get a sea view.

My partner and I stayed for a week whilst on a cricket tour. We had a fantastic stay. The room and facilities were clean, comfortable and spacious. The staff were most helpful and friendly and went out of their way to assist us. Of course the location is great due to proximity to a beautiful beach and numerous eateries and bars. We would definitely return.

Room Tip: Ocean rooms have balconys with views

My husband and I stayed at SP for a week Mar 9-16. This was my second visit (I stayed here in 2008 with my parents), but my husband's first visit ever to Barbados. If you are looking for a quiet and relaxing hotel, SP is the place to go.

There are several great things to say about SP. The beach is fabulous; it's big, sandy and quiet. There are sea turtles that frequent the beach and you can often see them swimming in the waves. The waves can be rough depending on the day and the red flag was up for 2 of the days. You can rent a variety of water equipment at no charge; boogie boards, masks, goggles, etc. The hotel provides you with two towels to use for the week. There are also many beach loungers and tables to drag under a palm tree or into the sun, also complimentary.

The hotel. It seems as though each room has a view of the ocean, whether you chose garden, pool or ocean view. We had a garden view room but still had a fairly clear view of the ocean from our balcony. Our room was spacious, king sized bed, shower only, tv, iron/board, safe (rent for $3/day), closet, hair dryer, small desk, mini fridge, kettle, mugs and glasses. Our room was clean and well taken care of.

The site. There are two pools, mini golf, shuffle board, tennis courts (across the street), a restaurant, internet lounge and fitness room. Each Friday there is a golf tournament with prizes (I won first place - a bottle of Mount Gay Rum :) ). There are many other weekly and daily activities to enjoy: managers rum punch party, aquafit in the pool, daily tea, there was a poster for zumba class as well but we saw the advert as we are leaving so I'm not sure if the class ran or not. There is also a great gift shop in the back of the lot with some nice souvenirs. One thing that would be nice for the site to have is a little tuck shop: drinks, chocolate, chips, snacks, magazines, basic necessities, etc.

Staff. I agree with some of the other posts that some of the front desk staff were a little icy. We often waited for the blonde British lady to be around before we went and asked any questions (I think she's the manager or owner). Most of the male staff were very helpful. The gentleman in the sports shop was very friendly, kind and helpful. Some of the bar staff were also less than friendly and it seemed like asking for a drink or some ice was ruining their day.

Location. The location is a great spot, right in the St. Lawrence Gap. I recommend going beyond the hotel and trying the many restaurants that the Gap has to offer. if you want to catch the local bus, the best way to get to the main road is to go across the road and take the path through Divi Southwinds.

We booked through Air Canada Vacations, so the local representative visited the hotel and helped us book tours and activities. Her name was Brittany and she was also excellent and very helpful!

We loved our stay so much and will definitely be back. Thank you so much Southern Palms for being such a wonderful escape from a cold Canadian winter!

Room Tip: You can see the ocean from any room. We prefered the room on a second floor so that people weren'...

One of the best locations and best beaches on the island. Spacious and calming. Second visit but not the last. Ideal location for evenings out in the Gap. Hire a car and get out and about. Restaurant OK and some very good ones are nearby.
Incredible sunsets not to missed.

Stayed at Southern Palms for 8 nights in February.Check in was easy and we were taken to our room which was 109 in Carlisle Block.
I had e-mailed Britta ( General manager) a few weeks prior to arriving requesting this room.
One review on Trip Advisor had recommended it.
The room was fine even though we paid for a sea view but couldn't really see it unless you looked over a hedge which was in the way.
It was ground floor and very near the small pool and beach.
You would get a better view of the ocean maybe on 1st or 2nd floor, 3 would be good but need to be fit as no lifts.
Food in hotel was good we ate there quite a lot, not as expensive as we thought It would be.
We went out to the Gap 3-4 minutes walk from SP but found it a bit hit and miss.
Very slow service everywhere but it is Barbados and quite laid back.
Only a couple of points to mention which might be of help.
Bought a bottle of wine from the bar which I ordered as Sauvignon Blanc.. It was very yellow/green in colour and tasted vile. Took it back and told the barman and he went off with the bottle for a pow wow with another bar person. On his return said it was Sauvignon even though it just said 'White Wine' on the bottle.. He couldn't explain that!!! I didn't make a fuss there was no point and it just went down the sink and had a Rum Punch instead.
Also there's a lot of noise from a bar across the road on a Saturday night very bad so called singing and very loud. We could hear it in our room but bearable. Wouldn't have wanted a room near the road.Sea views are the best rooms.
All in all a good hotel no reason not to return in the future.

Room Tip: Room 109 good...Ground floor, near small pool and near to beach
