“Yellowbird is a Home, away from Home”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2012

Yellowbird Hotel is located at the top of the St.Lawrence Gap, perfectly situated near all amenities, just a walk away from grocery stores, and many restaurants. The ocean views are amazing and the rooms are spacious and inviting. Night life in the Gap is busy, but not once did the noise effect me in any way. Waking up in one of these rooms is truely an experience not to miss. Local fishermen can be seen bringing in their catch from the day, and just the activity of living makes this a place not to be forgotton. Sunsets are spectular, don't forget your camera!!!! What I truely think makes it a home away from home, is the staff. Friendly, courteous, and very caring, they make you feel special! Just try the Yellowbird Hotel and I know,,,,,you'll be hooked!

After staying at Ocean Two Resort with my girlfriend for a few nights last week, she headed back home to work and I stayed the rest of the week at the Yellow Bird. The hotel is older and not as luxurious as the Ocean Two, but is a decent value. The service and location make up a bit for a lack of amenities.

When I checked in, I was taken to a regular first-floor room, but the sliding glass door did not lock property. After a few unsuccessful attempts to fix the lock, the manager, Geetra, upgraded me to the top-floor two-bedroom suite. It was larger than I needed as a solo traveller, but the room was impeccably clean and had an excellent view, including from a private balcony. The gentleman who attempted to fix the lock in the first room and who helped with my bags was also very welcoming and helpful.

The positives -- the service was very friendly and helpful, including with recommendations for dining and activities, the room was clean and the location is in the heart of the dining and nightlife of St. Lawrence Gap and the Opa restaurant is excellent.

The negatives -- the pool was closed for re-tiling of the deck during the entire time I was there, though they did allow me to use the pool at the neighboring South Gap Hotel (a sister property), the location is across a busy road from a small stretch of beach without any beach amenties like lounge chairs, snack bars or watersports (I wound up driving to Rockley Beach one day and taking a boat cruise another, as St. Lawrence Gap is really somewhere to be at night, not during the day), the wireless internet was down every evening that I tried to connect (a sign in the lobby blamed the internet service provider), the television is small and only gets a handful of channels and the air conditioning is only in the bedrooms (the living room was sweltering, even at night).

In summary, the hotel is in a good location for dining and nightlife and the staff is great, but the property is rather outdated. For the price, it is a decent value, especially on an expensive island, with quality comparable to other hotels in this price range where I've stayed elsewhere in the Caribbean.

Just returned from a 5 day trip to Barbados with 2 girlfriends. We decided to stay at the yellow bird based on the reviews I've read here: good value, location and helpful staff. The only big negative I saw on this was the noise. However, the noise did not bother as at all. We stayed in room 405 which seemed to be the furthest away from the noise. The only time we heard faint music was in the restroom. The hotel is in the beginning of the gap so the noise level is definitely not as bad as the hotels in the center.

Hotel Staff:
All super friendly and helpful. When we checked in the reception walked us up to our room to show us where all the restaurants are and where we could catch the bus. (showed us from our balcony). The provide currency conversion at the front desk as well - $1USD = $2BD.

Hotel:
-Pool: Small! And it also was being re-tiled so we couldn't use it. However you are able to use the pool at their sister hotel which is 2 mins away and is bigger than the one at yellowbird. But who really wants to go to the pool when there are so many beautiful beaches in the area?
-Room: The room is pretty big, which fridge, stove, coffee machine and safe. However, it is dated... could use an uplift. The beds were okay- we didn't have any problems sleeping since we were exhausted at the end of the night. The view is amazing from the balcony !
-AC: weak! When we came back in the afternoon we would turn the AC on and leave it on all night long. And it was just cool when we returned later at night. (housekeeping will turn off the AC when they clean your room.)
-WiFi: barely non existent in our room. Tip: most restaurants have free WiFi so you can ask them for the log in info.
-Restaurant: Opa! was pretty good. We had dinner there 1 night and breakfast the AM we left.

Location:
Perfect for us. There are tons of bars, restaurants and beaches all within 5 minutes walking distance. We tried a bunch of restaurants, including the one in the hotel, and our favorites are sweet potato and the one across from the small convenience store in the gap. (sorry forgot the name of that one-- Must try mac pie and flying fish! It was delicious at all the places.)

Transportation:
We took the bus, that's a few steps from the hotel on the main road, into Oistin's fish fry (10mins), Miami beach(10mins), Holetown(45mins) and Bridgetown(30 mins). You can catch the big gov't buses are the music playing one. They are both $1USD. We were a little worried about taking bus since it was 3 girls, but once we got on, we felt completely safe. We took the bus all the time during the day and at night we took the cab (was never more than $10USD).

Room Tip: Top floor to get away from the noise and rooms away from the clubs. We had rm 405 and we thought it...

My family and I returned recently from a week at the Yellowbird Hotel.
We had a great time the staff are unbelievable and definitely what make the hotel special.
If you are looking for a hotel with rooms that are impeccable then don't stay here. Although the rooms are clean, they are in need of a pretty major upgrade in regards to bathroom vanity's, ours was practically falling off the wall, and new grout through out.
The rooms were cleaned daily, and the towels always fresh. I think it would be a good idea to change the bed sheets at least once a week. The wifi was very intermittent. I'm sure through no fault of the hotel. We never watched the television as we were always to tired after a full day of being outside! Furniture is typical caribbean and added to the hotel charm.
We loved the location, it was a million dollar view from our 4th floor accomodation. The noise never bothered us and it was nice to be in walking distance to beaches, restaurants, shops and bus stops. We used the local supermarket a few times and they have a free shuttle that will take you back to the Yellowbird with all of your groceries.
Ramona and Audrey recommended a FANTASTIC restaurant about 10 min from the hotel called Shakers. Highly reccomend it, and really great value for your $.
If you love to snorkle, the two shipwrecks off of Carlise Beach are fantastic.
The beach our older teenage kids most enjoyed besides Carlise was Rockley Beach. Great for body surfing and a small reef for snorkling.
So much more was fantastic, will not go on and on though.
Will most definitely go back to Yellowbird, bathroom vanity and all!
Thank you to all of the staff there, you all truely give World Class Guest Experience as we say here at Westjet!!

Room Tip: top floor deluxe two bedroom suite was a great choice!

My wife and I recently took our 4-year old daughter down to Barbados for a week...found the Yellow Bird while searching for a nice local hotel, as we are not into the all-inclusive resorts and prefer to actually see the country and do local things, etc.

The Yellow Bird staff was great from before we even arrived, when I e-mailed about transportation from the airport and things like that. Every room has a view of the Bay - we were on top - 3 flights of stairs which may bother some but is the same as our apartment in New York. The rooms were great - having the kitchenette with a 4-year old was key, as we ended up preparing our own breakfast on the balcony every morning. The pool area has a view of the ocean as well, and the restaurant's bar opens up to that area so it's a nice place to hang out. We tried the restaurant once - was pretty good, though we tended to avoid the tourist spots in favor of the local street food (which you can easily find in the area).

There's a nice little rum shop behind the hotel. Also, transportation (calypso buses or the government buses) can get you to Oistins for the weekend fish fry or Bridgetown for the shopping and transfers to other parts of the island really easily. The location is great also because a few of the best beaches (Dover Beach & Rockley Beach) are walking distance. Also Carib beach (across the street and up a bit) has great sunday BBQ party.

The staff was excellent, and we even received a follow up e-mail from Audrey the assistant manager (who organizes a weekly happy hour too) b/c she didn't get to say goodbye!

This was our first trip to the Caribbean, and it was so perfect staying at the Yellow Bird that we already decided that we'd rather come back to Barbados then try to see a different island next time - I don't think the experience could compare anywhere else.

In general, Barbados was a very friendly place where you have things to explore beyond the beach (flower forest, caves, local rum shops and restaurants) and we can't wait to go back....make sure to try the Bajan hot sauce!

Room Tip: If you don't like climbing stairs shoot for a room on the lower floors. Although it's worth...

People can sometimes make up for deficiencies and that would be my assessment at Yellow Bird. Situated at the entrance of The Gap and overlooking a small cove, this small hotel enjoys an enviable position. A bus stop is very close and it is easy to walk to a nearby beach or convenience store for supplies. Opa is a good restaurant on-site and does take credit cards.
Be advised that in its present condition the rooms are not only dated but simply uninviting in several ways. Air conditioning works well; TV reception is good; wi-fi is iffy; beds are hard; appliances (fridge & stove) junky; etc. The pool area was being tiled and I was told other renovations will be underway soon. The ownership would do well to bring this hotel up to a much higher level where it could become the envy of the hotels in The Gap. I did not find noise to be an issue here at night, which is not the case with other hotel options in The Gap.

In comparing the rate here with other area options I'd say it is a bit pricey for what you get. Rooms are a decent size, though.

Kudos to Audrey, Geeta, and Monique and all staff who made my stay memorable.

Room Tip: Newer suites or the pent house are probably the best options at this time.

Just arrived back from two weeks at this hotel in Barbados, would thoroughly recommend it. Lovely resort, plenty of places to eat and drink and really friendly people. The staff at the 'Yellow Bird' could not do enough for us, rooms cleaned etc. every day and an adequate breakfast included, small but nice pool and lovely little beach just across the road, could sit by pool on sunbeds and then pop over to swim in the sea, if we wanted a change from the pool. Extra bonus are the turtles that also swim off this beach, we managed to see them most days,if we stayed still they would come quite close and pop their heads up to have a look at us !! Amazing !! A little noise at the weekend from the nightclub over the back, but not enough to be a nuisance. Overall a wonderful holiday and hotel, will definitely be going back.

Room Tip: Higher rooms are nice for the view.
