We have just returned from a great 7 night stay. Here are some of the things that we really liked:
Location
Situated on a really nice beach and is walking distance from both the Gap and Bridgetown.
The Beach
Quite secluded, plenty of space, no fighting for sunbeds and - thanks to discrete hotel security - no hawkers. All the beaches here are public but this was not a problem. By contrast, it was great to go for walks along all the various beaches. Swimming is good too
No Entertainment!
Virtually no hotel "entertainment" - we hate this stuff so we were very glad there was very little of it. The only bit we had to endure was on a hot, sunny Sunday afternoon when we had the somewhat eccentric combination of a brass band playing hymns and an ice-cream van playing christmas carols!!
Service
The "Bajans" do everything in their own time and even if you think its not going to happen, it does. Just don´t waste your time trying to hurry things along. They aren´t going to change and maybe we can learn to enjoy life at their pace instead of fretting at ours. Just take a paper or a book with you when you go to the beach bar...!
Despite this, the service IS good. We were not happy with our room when we arrived and so we were given a new and much better room on the top floor. No problem.
Local Restaurants. We went room-only and ate out at some of the many local first-class restaurants. Of course, my better half had decided that, as we weren´t paying for full board the money "saved" had to be spent on fine dining. Hmmm.... However, some of the meals we had were simply excellent.
We didn´t actually eat at the hotel, although we did enjoy our daily breakfast of coconut bread, muffins and coffee at "The Coffee Bean" and became fans of the famous Turtle Nest Beach Bar rotis! Yum yum!
The room.
Caribbean hotel rooms do tend to be a little more basic than the equivalent US standard. However, it was clean and well kitted-out with a large safe (big enough for the laptop - a first!), an iron plus ironing board, a fridge, and a decent sized balcony with comfy chairs!
The bathroom is fairly basic - there was only a shower and no bath in our room. However, do check out the "slow-closing" loo seat - a must-have product for your next bathroom!!!
Ladies (and girlies) do pack a mirror. The one in the room is too far away from the plug socket when doing your hair.
The internet connection did not work in the room and the hotel internet cafe is horribly overpriced at 15$ for 15 mins (as compared to 3$ at the local internet cafés 5-10 mins walk towards the Gap). On the other hand, we did not go there to work!
The overall experience was of a smallish, charming, well-run Caribbean Hotel. The staff - like almost all Bajans - are warm, friendly and helpful.
All in all, an excellent holiday.
PS don´t miss the 100%-fruit lollies at the hotel shop!
