The Amaryllis has a beautiful beach. Enough palm trees to have some shade; perfect beach chairs to relax. It was not crowded during our visit (14 March).
We did not book an all inclusive package and we were glad we didn't. The restaurants in the area (39 steps, mama mia; all walking distance) are much better and reasonably priced. We found the food in Amaryllis to be average. Be in time for breakfast when there is still a cook to make some omelettes for you or see that the pigeons have taken control of the buffet.
We had a hotel room with garden view which was fine. It was a bit humid in the room but that is to be expected in that climate near the ocean. Beds were comfortable, room was clean.
The staff can be described as 'couldn't care less', or is it just the relaxed Caribbean vibe ? Anyway, we found most of the staff uninterested or even rude. Checking in and out was one of the worst hotel experiences ever... Strange because the minor flaws of Amaryllis could easily be offset by some efforts of friendly staff in our opinion.
We had a great time but are not likely to return.

We have just returned from a great 7 night stay. Here are some of the things that we really liked:

Location
Situated on a really nice beach and is walking distance from both the Gap and Bridgetown.

The Beach
Quite secluded, plenty of space, no fighting for sunbeds and - thanks to discrete hotel security - no hawkers. All the beaches here are public but this was not a problem. By contrast, it was great to go for walks along all the various beaches. Swimming is good too

No Entertainment!
Virtually no hotel "entertainment" - we hate this stuff so we were very glad there was very little of it. The only bit we had to endure was on a hot, sunny Sunday afternoon when we had the somewhat eccentric combination of a brass band playing hymns and an ice-cream van playing christmas carols!!

Service
The "Bajans" do everything in their own time and even if you think its not going to happen, it does. Just don´t waste your time trying to hurry things along. They aren´t going to change and maybe we can learn to enjoy life at their pace instead of fretting at ours. Just take a paper or a book with you when you go to the beach bar...!

Despite this, the service IS good. We were not happy with our room when we arrived and so we were given a new and much better room on the top floor. No problem.

Local Restaurants. We went room-only and ate out at some of the many local first-class restaurants. Of course, my better half had decided that, as we weren´t paying for full board the money "saved" had to be spent on fine dining. Hmmm.... However, some of the meals we had were simply excellent.

We didn´t actually eat at the hotel, although we did enjoy our daily breakfast of coconut bread, muffins and coffee at "The Coffee Bean" and became fans of the famous Turtle Nest Beach Bar rotis! Yum yum!

The room.
Caribbean hotel rooms do tend to be a little more basic than the equivalent US standard. However, it was clean and well kitted-out with a large safe (big enough for the laptop - a first!), an iron plus ironing board, a fridge, and a decent sized balcony with comfy chairs!

The bathroom is fairly basic - there was only a shower and no bath in our room. However, do check out the "slow-closing" loo seat - a must-have product for your next bathroom!!!
Ladies (and girlies) do pack a mirror. The one in the room is too far away from the plug socket when doing your hair.

The internet connection did not work in the room and the hotel internet cafe is horribly overpriced at 15$ for 15 mins (as compared to 3$ at the local internet cafés 5-10 mins walk towards the Gap). On the other hand, we did not go there to work!

The overall experience was of a smallish, charming, well-run Caribbean Hotel. The staff - like almost all Bajans - are warm, friendly and helpful.

All in all, an excellent holiday.

PS don´t miss the 100%-fruit lollies at the hotel shop!

“A Hidden Treasure”

Amaryllis Beach Resort

I stayed at the Amaryllis based on a friend's recommendation and I thought the property was perfect. It is located off of a fairy busy street in barbados however, it is very close to St. Lawrence Gap (The Gap) via taxi. There is also a bus that will take you from the hotel to the Gap, however I did not use the bus while I stayed there. Upon arriving to the property, my travel companion and I were greeted with smiles and were escorted to the front desk for check in. We arrived at 930am and although check in was not until later in the afternoon, the front desk rep found us an available room. During our check in there were computer problems so while we waited for the computer problems to be resolved, we were given cold fresh squeezed orange juice. After we were given our room key, the bellman helped us with our bags. We booked an ocean view room and were given a room that overlooked the pool and the jacuzzi, as well as the outdoor beach restaurant. The room was a standard room. Big enough to accomodate two adults and it was clean. I did find a hand towel on the shower curtain rod and I assumed that housekeeping simply didnt notice it in between the shower curtain. The a/c in the room was cold and the television worked fine. The beds were comfortable and the sheets were clean. We quickly tried the buffet breakfast in the hotel's restaurant and that as well as ok. The menu rotates each day and the first day there were coconut pancakes, flying fish nuggets, an omelette station, beans, and various fruits and pastries. There was also cereal and a juice machine that did not work, however, the waitstaff was pleased to bring glasses of any juice i requested. My major gripe about the restaurant was that there was alot of pigeons in the restaurant area, especially near the food. At one point a pigeon was eating off of one of the serving spoons. This grossed me out as I think pigeons are vile. I had the same problem when eating lunch at the outdoor restaurant by the pool. However, the pigeons werent as aggressive. The outdoor restaurant had a full menu of sandwiches and other caribbean entrees (i.e. roti, flying fish..etc..). The outdoor restaurant also had a happy hour two for one special that was nice. The beach was fully equipped with water sports and plenty of clots to lay out on. The beach itself was sort of secluded so only patrons of Amaryllis were around. One night we had drinks at the restaurant bar and the drinks were great and fairly reasonable. The hotel seems to cater to europeans as we were seemingly the only americans there at the time. To dispel some myths. The service was awesome. What u put out u get back. We were very friendly and conversational with the staff and they in turn were the same with us. The rooms were a bit dated but they were clean and they served their purpose. You dont come to barbados to stay in the room. You have to enjoy the nightlife..the sun and the beach., as well as the cuisine. One recommendation for the hotel, purchase more computers for your internet cafe. There is only one terminal and that can be annoying if someone is hovering over u waiting for u to finish checking ur email. I will send some pics shortly.

We spent 10 days at the Amaryllis Hotel. We had a one bedroom oceanfront room and the view was great. The room was good size; however, the floors were always dusty (no carpet). The maids came in daily to tidy up the rooms, but never changed the sheets (their brochure claims that sheets are changed every three days due to the conservation of water, but ours were never changed--I know because their was a chocolate stain on our child's bed and the same stain was there at the end of our trip).
e
There was no electrical outlet near the bathroom, so I had to blowdry and curl my hair in the bedroom, where there was no mirror. The tubs/showers were small and not very well kept. There was an odd septic smell throughout our stay.

There are a few restaurants on the property, but never seemed to be open at the hours they claimed to be open. The food was good, but the portions were small (4 cheesesticks for $8USD is not chap). Try the spicy Bajan chicken breast with the fettucine alfredo--delicious). The local icecream (available in the sundries store) was inexpensive and yummy!

The people at the front desk were helpful, but the lady in the sundries store was very rude and impatient (I was an American trying to figure out the Barbadian currency--so it took me a few tries).

The hotel was very good about letting you borrow towels. They claim you can use all of their non-motorized equipment (snorkeling gear, life vests, boogie-boards) free of charge, but there were never any available.

The best thing about our trip is that we met a local guy, Vere, and he showed us around the island. He gave us the history of Barbados and we met some really nice Bajans. Definitely take the tours on the island.

We moved here to a de-luxe studio. Wonderful..clean, quiet, beach so good..no hassle from sellers. One beach shack selling hand made beach wear ( the owner sews the garments as you watch). Security above average. We had a garden view which was cooler in evening. Bliss.
The 39 steps restaurant is on site..great meal and service.
The snack area at lunch is good..rotis best on menu. Happy hour is 12.30- 1.30. Afterwards you can have a jacuzi and plunge pool. Swim in the sea after 3pm..calm then, warm and safe. Watersports on offer here too.
We had trip round Island. Oistens night and Cat trip.
