We stayed here for 10 nights in Jan 2013. Overall we found this a nice, local, friendly hotel.
The things we liked in particular were:
- Rooms were spacious and had what you needed (ironing board, iron, free safe, TV and hairdryer)
- Beach towels were in your room ready (much better than those hotels where you get cards and have to exchange them etc)
- Good free wifi connection
- We liked the hotel beach, although it wasn't very big, and enjoyed walking either side of the hotel
- Also had an option (on Tues, Sat and Sun) to go to another beach via the free hotel shuttle bus; this included free drinks when you were there
- You had the option of a la carte or buffet dining at night. It was a really, really, easy booking system and were never turned away
- Breakfasts were pretty good; we have stayed at lots of hotels and this is the only one we have found that will cook you poached eggs to order
- Liked the fact you could walk into Bridgetown from the hotel (about 30-40 mins) and you can walk around easily or use buses without any problems or intimidation (unlike some other Caribbean islands)
- We booked with Virgin and the check-in, chill-out feature was brilliant
- There was a gym, although it was a bit poorly equipped
- Rachel's a la carte restaurant. In particular, the tuna steaks, lamb shanks and the pastas were excellent as well as nice puddings
Things not so perfect:
- Although housekeeping kept the rooms very clean, your towel assortment was a bit hit and miss, sometimes only having one handtowel and no flannels. Another time they took one of our own towels we had brought for the beach, and it took a couple of days asking before we got this back
- Our room was on the top floor which had an apex window above the balcony doors. This had no curtains or other method to block out light, which meant early morning sun woke us up every day
To summarise: this was our first trip to Barbados, and if you've never been, it's a very welcoming island, and we would not hesitate to go back. We really lked the fact you could just wander about on your own, go on buses (we visited Harrison's caves via public transport) and feel safe doing so. This hotel was a very good price as Barbados can be an expensive island.
One thing to note is that when you look at the brochure, the hotel does offer about 20 different types of room/upgrades etc. This cause confusion, as there are only about 90 rooms in total and what you book may not be what you are given when you arrive. This happened to us, and took about an hour to sort out, which wasn't a great first impression, but it was sorted.
We didn't upgrade to the 'yellow wristband' which seemed to include premium drinks and a stocked mini-bar, but as we are not spirit drinkers, were not bothered. The only thing we missed out on were the more comfortable sun loungers and waiter service on the beach. However, you can upgrade to a nice bottle of wine at Rachel's a la carte for small money.
The one thing that struck us about this hotel was how nice, relaxed and friendly people seemed (i.e. other holidaymakers; there were no loud Americans, pushy Russians or sunbed nicking Germans) it was just a very nice good old British atmosphere (there was a nice Swedish family there) sorry if that sounds uncosmopolitan, but I'm sure you know what I mean...
All I can say is if this hotel comes round at a good price again, in the words of Arnie 'I'll be back!'.
