“A relaxing weekend of Poetry, Sun, Sea”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2009

My partner and I found Pensione Signorini completely by chance, looking for a weekend away on the seaside. What we discovered at Pensione Signorini was a warm, friendly reception by the husband-wife team and felt like we were taken in as family by them and their greater family. The home cooked meals were the best in town, the atmosphere was caring and warm, the rooms clean and comfortable and the location was perfect. The truly amazing aspect of Pensione Signorini is that you arrive as a guest and leave as a dear friend. We spent a pleasant part of the weekend learning how and then composing haiku with the owners, being invited to an incredible dinner celebration with their family and friends and left feeling that whenever we come back to the coast, we hope to stay at Pensione Signorini again and again.

We arrived in Castiglioncello on a sunny late afternoon and were looking for a reasonable place to stay the night before flying home from Pisa. What a delightful find and what wonderful hosts, Virginia speaks good English, her Armenian Poet husband, who understands but does not speak English and Grandma who speaks Spanish and makes the most heavenly cakes for breakfast.
This pension is clean and simple with crisp linen, a good shower, hot water and books on art in each room. The two rooms we were offered were both family rooms with bunks for kids if you have them and sea views. If you want a base for travelling inland to see Sienna, San Gimignano and Volterre with the option of lying on the beech or walking in pine forests, this could be just what you're looking for. This coastline is very much frequented by Italians but does not seem to have been discovered by the rest of us and it's beautiful with huge pines and in May loads of poppies and other wild flowers. If you're a painter you could drive out a little and follow in the footsteps of Giovanni Fattori and the other Macchiaioli painters who came here to paint.
Located on the outskirts of Castiglincello the pension is nice and quiet and the well lit promenade means that you can walk along the front to eat at the Crocodrillo restaurant as the sun goes down, there we had wonderful seafood pasta and risotto served by the owner who also speaks good English.

  • Liked — clean sheets and hot water followed by the cake for breakfast
  • Disliked — nothing
