Two weeks in July 2013, two adults and two teens. Lovely holidays, beautiful accommodation here and would definitely recommend. We booked direct with IslandBlue using their website and booked the larger two bedroom apartment with two bathrooms and a little kitchenette. I haven't bothered putting pictures of the room on here as they are exactly the same as the professional pictures. Lovely modern clean spacious rooms.
We asked the hotel to book a taxi for us and they met us at the airport - 75E to Pefkos (and the same price on the return) from airport to pefkos for 4 ppl 4 cases.
Benefits to booking direct - the safe is included FOC - saving of 47E for our fortnight stay. On arrival we were quickly checked in and driven to our room in the golf buggy.
Rooms were immaculate with fruit, flowers, wine and water waiting for us. Two dressing gowns and plenty of towels, pillows and also blankets, iron/board, hairdryers. There wasn't many coat hangers but if you ask the maids you can have more. Rooms have good modern airconditioners included free of charge and TVs showing UK channels inc BBC, ITV, CH4, ITV2, E4 etc etc. Not that you want to watch too much TV on hols but at least its UK channels when you come in from the pool for a chill before dinner.
Our kitchenette hade a kettle, toaster, two ring hob, toasted sandwich maker, plenty of pots and pans and cutlery etc. We made the odd sandwich and fruit meal and also made pasta one day.
Bathrooms are very good. Loads of hot water, very good water pressure. Great showers, proper showers with enclosures. Rooms have good thick curtains so they are nice and dark, good if travelling with small children. Balcony's are nice too. Beds are a little firm but the cleaners will make up your bed with the blankets under the sheet to make them a bit softer. Cleaners are great and come in every day and sort everything out for you to a very high standard.
Wi-fi seems to be in the process of been placed in all the main bar areas. Its definitely up and running at Elia bar. When you order food or drinks they will give you the code. They also have some PCs set up at 1E for 18mins. You can also buy a wi-fi card for 5E for 90mins from reception. But if you go across the road to Angel bar and buy a drink they also have good quality Wi-Fi as does the George Restaurant. Other people have complained about the lack of wifi and it seems the resort is trying to do something about it. But it is a big resort to try to cover. However, the air con is included FOC and I'd rather have that in a greek hotel than wi-fi.
B&B is great as the breakfast is plentiful and good quality. Coffee is lovely, as are the biscuits, donuts and local yoghurts/jams. They provide a hot English breakfast style choice inc porridge, bacon, sausages (tends to be hot dog style), eggs, wedges/chips, mushrooms, omelette, beans and grilled tomato. Couple of types of cereals and plenty of fruit and breads to choose from. If you cant feed yourself from this massive choice then you have issues! served till 1030am.
My only negative about the hotel is that they only serve squash or diluted juice at breakfast! Luke warm Robinsons style diluted drink you would give to kids. YAKKY! A little odd considering how cheap real oranges are in Greece as they grow locally. I haven't ever been served squash at breakfast before. But as I say this is the only negative I can really conjure so its pretty minor.
Supermarket on the resort (close to Lindia Thalassa) is a great little market with good prices, lots of English stuff if you want it and nice sandwiches etc. Not really any more expensive than the shops on the strip so get your bits here.
We didn't eat any evening meals at Elia restaurant as it was pretty expensive and fairly limited and fellow guests hadn't been impressed. We had a few pool bar snacks and they were nice but again fairly expensive.
We did attend the greek night but I wouldn't recommend. Its 17E per person (kids are less I think). So we paid 68E plus drinks. The food is buffet style and they cram a lot of people in so there are big queues. You have one plate and all the starters/mains go quickly so you have to get your food in one journey. I think it would be better if you got up once for starters and again for mains. The food was good but it was a bit of a scrum to get it! I think you could get up a second time if you wanted but the choice was pretty desimated by then The dessert was fruit and some little bits but it went quickly. Therefore it was a very expensive meal for one plate and a free glass of ouzo. The greek dancers were good, but it was a very hot evening and we have seen this type of thing many times on greek hols. Including drinks we spent 100E between 4 so our most expensive meal whilst on hols so not good.
We had lovely great value meals at the following places and would highly recommend a visit : Philosophia (expensive but beautiful), Two Brothers Grill (our favourite), Pano Di Capo, Lee Beach Bar, Romentia No 4 (the 8.90E set meal place on the corner - don't be put off - lovely food), Alexandria Gyros/Kebab Bar. All the food on the strip is nice so you don't really need to eat in the restaurant on site. We were also recommended to try Keymar and DarmaDarma but you have to book in and we ran out of days!
We paid 40E a day to hire a car to get to the waterpark and the teens loved it. We also got a cab to Lindos - just 8E each way and definitely worth a visit. Had a lovely meal at Marios in Lindos next door to Yiannis bar. Walk to the amphitheatre and keep going to get to st pauls bay, very pretty.
Pefkos Beach is nice, very narrow and small nearest the resort down the stairs but walk to the right and keep going and the sea has less rocks and the beach widens. 8E for two beds + umbrella for the day, not bad. We did enjoy the beach.
Pools are lovely, we only used the two on Island Blue's property. The Elia restaurant pool was our favourite, lovely big beds and nice and peaceful. The main pool/pool bar for Island Blue was busy and quite noisy with lots of kids.
Which brings me to our two problems with this resort. Other guests!
It's very popular with large wedding groups. Island Blue is pretty expensive compared to Pefki Islands and Lindia Thalassa. So groups of 60+ Brits arrive for a wedding, and only a few people are staying in the Island Blue inc the bride and groom, but most want to stay together as a group round the pool. And as Island Blue has the nicest pool (in my opinion) they all want to stay near that pool. The problem being that you have to be up and out at around 7.30/8am if you want to get sunbeds together. As a group of four sharing a room, if we didn't get to the pool until 9am, we struggled to get four beds together and on one occasion we couldn't even get two beds together. People are inherently selfish so they put their towels down and may not even use the pool area a great deal. There are signs up saying that towels left before 9am will be removed, but this doesn't happen. The sign also says that the beds are free and all can use but that guests of Island blue will be given priority...? How? There is no way for this to happen and no one checks. There are only two people covering the pool bar and they are run off their feet covering the bar so how can they check the sunbeds. Someone suggested IslandBlue giving all room guests a blue beach towel each to use round the pool. Then at a glance they could see who was a IB guest and who wasn't. We overheard one person saying they had got up at 430am to place their towels. And another guest (who was staying in Pefki Islands) admitted to getting up at 7am and putting towels on 2 beds at the Elia pool for the morning and towels on 2 beds at the IB Pool Bar for the afternoon! Even though there was only 2 of them staying! So they were holding beds they had no intention of using. Rude! I think the Island Blue need to consider this as it is very expensive to stay here and I didn't expect to have to do a early morning sunbed run at this type of hotel. I know this is a problem on lots of holidays, but as we had paid a premium to stay in Island Blue I wanted to be able to use the pools at Island Blue.
Noisy neighbours. BRING EAR PLUGS! As the rooms have all tiles and are minimalist with hardly any soft furnishings the noise carries. They are not paper thin walls or anything but if people are noisy you can hear it. Why do people come in at 2am and stamp around with their high heels on, and proceed to move furniture around, slam doors and bang toilet seats only to start doing it again at 6.30am! We were at the end of a block and were on floor 2. It was very hard to figure out where the noise was coming from. It seemed like above but as we couldn't be sure I couldn't call reception to ask for help. And sometimes we wondered if it was the cleaners but we checked and it wasn't as they don't start that early. But without earplugs we were disturbed. I don't know what the answer is, apart from adjusting door closures and adding soft pads to the furniture legs. But perhaps putting signs up near the doors reminding people to consider their neighbours. Again this is a problems which all hotels suffer with but I would suggest you try to get a top floor room to prevent this problem. Although we asked for a quiet room on a high floor but didn't get it so I suppose you can only ask.
I know I have raised a couple of complaints about noisy neighbours, sun bed hoggers and squash at breakfast, but this was a fabulous place and we would return again but maybe not in high season. Pefkos is lovely and we had a great holiday. The hotel is very high quality and above all else the staff are very friendly and helpful and seem to go out of their way to be helpful.
Recommended as a great hotel which has lots and lots of returning guests and this shows its a nice place to visit.
High season - its extremely hot in July/Aug so bring loads of sun cream and mosi stuff for evenings out.
