At $10 a night for a double reed hut and less for camping and dorm rooms, this is a great place to put your head. The staff are friendly and the food good. Drinks and food are very cheap at around $3.5 for fish and chips and $0.60 for a beer. Only prob is the rooms are right next to the bar, which often attracts partyers from all over the area, so if you want a restful holiday, perhaps this is not the best place to stay. In addition, there is a local beer hall just outside and the music plays from 7am to midnight every day. There is no electricity in the rooms and therefore no fans and over the period we stayed (Dec), they were almost too hot to sleep in!
As a backpacker travelling through, I would highly recommend Malambe as it is great value for money, however I would not recommend it for a family holiday....
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Cape Maclear's funkiest backpacker lodge, situated on the sandy shores of Lake Malawi Description Malambe (Chichewa for baobab) is situated on the sandy beach of Lake Malawi right in the heart of Cape Maclear and offers camping, beach hut and dorm accommodation at great prices. We have a cool bar overlooking the lake towards Thumbe Island serving all drinks (ice cold of course) and a restaurant serving breakfast lunch and dinner. For those who wish to self cater - our large spotlessly clean kitchen is fully equipped with all that is needed to cook up a delicious dinner. The village market is a short walk away and has all that you would expect to find in a local market. Watch out for the early morning fisherman as they come in with their catches - a variety of fresh fish which is great for the BBQ. Malambe is also trying to be environmentally friendly and uses solar power for hot water and for some lighting. Other services at Malambe include wifi internet access, laundry, boat trips, village tours and free use of snorkelling equipment. Be warned - those who stay find it very hard to leave! ... more less
